Boundary row over Lake District community
There's claims that a Cumbrian community could be split in two if proposed changes to local election boundaries go ahead.
Under the plans, areas of Windermere would move into the same ward for elections to South Lakeland District Council as Ambleside and Grasmere.
Boundary Commission for EnglandCopyright: Boundary Commission for England
The leader of the Conservative group on South Lakeland District Council, Ben Berry, says that it risks carving up the town:
"Surely, Windermere should be kept together. I mean that's simple."
"That's why over 500 people have signed a petition in under 24 hours to say 'let's keep Windermere together'."
His current ward of Windermere, Applethwaite and Troutbeck would become just Windermere with Applethwaite and Troutbeck becoming part of the Ambleside and Grasmere ward.
For Mr Berry, it's about a bigger principle than the changes to local election wards:
"These boundaries will be used in the future for other changes, whether they're changes to Windermere Town Council's area, Lakes Parish [council]'s area or county council areas," he said.
Navy chief hails partnership between Barrow and Submarine Service
A naval chief has praised the work between Barrow and the Submarine Service on the 15th anniversary of it receiving the freedom of the borough.
Rear Admiral John Weale, Head of the UK Submarine Service, said: "The borough and the Royal Navy have worked closely together for more than a century: from HMS Holland 4 and HMS A1 being laid down in 1902, through the Swiftsure and Trafalgar class boat builds of the 1970s and 80s, and now the town is building our seven 21st Century Astute class submarines - arguably the most capable attack submarine in the world."
"Having previously built the Vanguard class of submarine, we can anticipate decades of future work as the town readies itself to build the Successor class of submarine, which are due to come in to service in the early 2030s."
