  4. North Yorkshire Wildlife artist's rare weasel footage stars on Springwatch

    Andrew Barton

    BBC Local Live, York

I once visited the home and studio of North Yorkshire wildlife artist Robert E Fuller, and the cameras hidden all over his garden and TV screens inside his house, showing what the cameras catch, make it all very much like a mini-Springwatch.

    Robert Fuller and weasel

So I'm not surprised to hear the BBC Springwatch team have made their way to Thixendale, to film his wildlife haven.

Robert uses video to research wildlife for his paintings and will be on BBC Springwatch next Monday and Tuesday, because of the rare footage he's captured of the secret lives of weasels.

Look carefully at the lovely pics of weasels below: the one on the right Robert photographed, the one on the left - he painted!

    Weasel painting and phorograph

Springwatch filmed Robert as he patrolled different wildlife areas in his garden that hosts wild stoats, weasels, barn owls, kestrels and tawny owls.

But his rare footage of weasels mating will headline the episode. Robert's recordings are believed to be the only video of their kind.

Robert says he spotted two wild weasels in his flower borders last year so he left food out to encourage them to stay where he could watch them and built underground feeding boxes with cameras inside them.

Quote Message: Weasels are small enough to slip through a wedding ring and are so fast and secretive that it is impossible to watch them for long in the wild, which is why there has been very little research into their behaviour until now." from Robert E Fuller Wildlife artist

    Joanita Musisi

It's at RHS Garden Harlow Carr near Harrogate and it's the first time they've had one.

But, judging from the pictures above, I'm starting to think they might be using just a bit too much plant food!
