When Victoria Wood became a scriptwriter for The Archers

Hannah Ratcliffe

Assistant Producer, The Archers

In 2005 Victoria Wood joined forces with The Archers to raise money for Comic Relief.

Victoria, described as a “devoted Archers fan” at the time, wrote a special episode called Victoria Goes To Ambridge, which ended with a starring role for a celebrity.

Listeners raised £13,448 by voting for the celebrity to complete the series, a record at the time. The four famous Archers fans listeners chose from were; Stephen Fry, Ewan MacGregor, Sir Ian McKellen and Liza Tarbuck.

It was Stephen Fry who got the most votes.

As well as writing the mini-series Victoria worked with The Archers studio managers to record the sound effects using props in The Archers’ studio.

The Archers editor at the time, Vanessa Whitburn, said: “Victoria was a delight to work with - obviously a genuine listener and very professional, as well as being very funny.”

Jolene: 'More crisps?'

Lilian: 'No I won't thanks, the salt plays havoc with my water retention, i don't want any more evenings in casualty, thanks very much.'

Jolene: 'Well that can't have been much fun, being cut out of your own underwear...'
