  3. 'We’re still fighting for something'

    Southampton 4-2 Man City

    Ronald Koeman

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman told BBC Sport: “It was a great game. Maybe the best opening 45 minutes by us of the season. We scored some great goals. We play full of confidence and have a very good record at home.

“We created so many problems for them – the pace was the key to win the game. Sadio had a big impact in the result. We did an amazing job.

“We really have a team of players really motivated and we like to play good football. We fight for Europe and that’s what we like. Two games to go and we’re still fighting for something.“

    That's almost Keegan-esque. I'd love it...

  4. 'We might have named a stronger team'

    Southampton 4-2 Man City

    Manuel Pellegrini

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini told BBC Sport: "I'm very frustrated because I didn’t expect that performance - especially in defence. At least four of them [today's line-up] are not playing [regularly].

"I think we could've played on Saturday and named a stronger team. But in this case we had to prioritise Wednesday's game [against Real Madrid].

"The best way to prepare is to win but we couldn’t do it."

  6. Transfomation

    Southampton 4-2 Man City

Near the start of this text commentary there was a graphic that showed a sizeable gap between the two Saints forwards and the midfield.

This is the full-time average positions graphic, which shows that Southampton ended the match with a far more attacking formation.

    Magic.

  7. 'I like football'

    Southampton 4-2 Man City

    Ronald Koeman

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman told Sky Sports: "It's very good to win against teams like City. You have to be at your best. The first 45 minutes we played great football. Even in the second half we did everything you need to do.

"I like football and I like a team who play from the beginning to win the game. Our three forward players did a phenomenal job. Dusan Tadic, if he gets some freedom, he’s dangerous.

"It’s an important win because we are still fighting for Europe. We have passed Liverpool and that’s good. We need two more wins. Last year was a fantastic season with 60 points. We have 57 now – maybe we can do better than last season, which would be incredible."

Good job once more Ron, good job.

  8. 'We didn't defend well'

    Southampton 4-2 Man City

    Kelechi Iheanacho

Manchester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho: "Many things went wrong in our team. We lost so many balls and didn’t defend well. I think we’re going to come stronger in the next game. This game didn’t give us enough encouragement. But we will put it behind us and focus on the Real Madrid game."

That game at the Bernabeu is on Wednesday. They will have to defend a lot, lot better.

  9. Player reaction

    Southampton 4-2 Man City

    Jose Fonte

Southampton hat-trick hero Sadio Mane on Sky Sports: "The most important thing was the three points. I’m happy to score the goals for the team. We are happy to score more goals today. I think we’ve played fantastic football."

Saints captain Jose Fonte: "I thought we were commanding and superior. We are pleased with the performance. We knew we would have to contain their pressure and Mane was on fire today. It’s important to be in the fight [for the Europa League] – you never know what will happen in the Premier League – it’s the best league in the world."
