'Absolute promise' Kenya’s ivory will be burned

Richard Leakey led the Kenya Wildlife Service in the 1990s and was successful in reducing the number of elephants killed by poachers and in destroying stocks of ivory.

But illegal poaching has been on the rise in recent years. The Born Free Foundation, a wildlife charity, says "tens of thousands" of elephants are killed for their ivory every year.

Last month the Kenyan government conducted an audit of its ivory stocks and found it had more than 130 tonnes.

Richard Leakey tells HARDtalk’s Stephen Sackur those stocks "will be put to the torch destroyed to ash, definitely within twelve months".
