Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale, speaking to BT Sport: "It doesn’t matter who scores or whether it's an own goal or not. The main thing is we have a chance to win the Champions League again. 

"I felt we were close to killing the game off but couldn’t get clear cut chances. 

"The reason I came to Real Madrid was to win Champions Leagues. I've got one already and I have got another chance to win another. 

"I feel like I am maturing. My Spanish is getting better and I'm integrating more with the team. I feel like I have turned a corner in that sense and I'm enjoying my football here."

Jonathan Cowley: Absolutely gutted. We haven't done ourselves justice at all. Lacked urgency and intensity all night. Opportunity missed.

Liz Tray: That was a limp exit. We created very little over three hours. Gave the ball away far too much. Just a shrug of a departure.

Mohammed Zakari: Real Madrid have gotten themselves their very own Pep Guardiola. Congrats Zizu, well deserved.

Back to the Premier League for Manchester City and it is all about securing a top-four finish ahead of Pep Guardiola's arrival.

They are four points clear of fifth-place Manchester City with two games left to play - at home to Arsenal and away to Swansea. 

Manchester United have three games left against Norwich (a), West Ham (a) and Bournemouth (h).

You've got to fancy City to get the job done, but imagine Guardiola in the Europa League next season...

James Harden: City didn't look like they wanted it. The fact Ronaldo seemed to have more attempts than the whole City team speaks for itself.

Russell Higginbotham: Man City missed Silva tonight. Gutted that they didn't give it a real go. Better to go down fighting than with a whimper.

Mike Giverin: It's not the fact we lost, it's just how boring, slow and awful we were that hurts.

"Vincent Kompany's had problems with his calves for a long time, and maybe he needs three or four months out to recover properly. That's football. I'd rather lose him for that long and have him fit for the next four or five years.

"The club may say different but I think they want him to play so badly that once he feels a bit good he puts his hand up for selection when he's not 100%."

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini, speaking to BT Sport: "I am disappointed because I think that was a very close game with two teams who did not create many chances. The two teams were working with no-one making a difference.

"It is not the best thing changing a defender very early but I don't think we had any problems in defence, we had problems creating, same as Real Madrid. They did not create many chances.

"We worked the game very well. During whole game we tried to make some difference."

"I felt sorry for Sergio Aguero, he never really got one-on-one with the centre-halves. He got lost, got hustled, and he got frustrated. He almost ended up in midfield. He had a very quiet two games. The only effort he had tonight was that late one that went just over the bar."
