  3. Brian Byrne: Search goes on for missing Hertford man

    Last week we heard the appeals from the family of Hertford man Brian Byrne who was reported missing on 7 May.

    Over the weekend, Hertfordshire Police conducted water-based searches in the Lee Valley Park along stretches of the River Lee near Broxbourne.

    The 58-year-olds white Vauxhall Combo van was seen by a member of the public in Crownfield, Nazeing, Essex, last Wednesday but Brian has still not been located.

    Mr Byrne is about 6ft 5in tall, of stocky build, with balding grey hair.

  4. £13m investment for Hertfordshire schools

    Hertfordshire County Council will invest £13m in the expansion of five primary schools creating 97 extra places. It follows a public consultation which revealed an anticipated growth in demand.

    Chris Hayward, cabinet member for education, said: "We want all children to have access to a good education so they can reach their full potential. That means ensuring the right number of school places in the right location."

    The places will be available from September 2016.

  5. MK arsons: 'lives could be lost'

    A fire station commander is warning that lives could be lost if arsonists in Milton Keynes aren't caught soon.

    One lorry and two cars were set alight within 20 minutes of each other in Milton Keynes during the early hours this morning.

    Ian Wilson, Broughton fire station commander, said: "We hope the police catch them as soon as possible because if they don't realise the seriousness of what they're doing, this will ultimately lead to the loss of life."

    Animal rights campaign group PETA have sent a letter to Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans asking the pub to change its name.

    Dawn Carr, from PETA, said: "Fighting cocks brings to mind the violence of cock fighting, but a name like 'Ye Olde Clever Cock's' would reflect our present society's rejection of needless violence."

    Landlord Christo Tofalli told the BBC: "We are happy to discuss this with PETA but we would like to remind everyone that the pub is very historic and when local children are taught about it they are told that cock fighting was wrong and that is why it was banned."

  9. Tree traps residents in homes

    A 50ft tree that fell across a road has left residents of a quiet cul-de-sac trapped in their homes.

    The residents of four houses in Lombardy Drive, Berkhamsted, have been unable to come and go from their properties since the mature beech tree came down at around midday.

  10. New chief for Buckinghamshire police

    Thames Valley Police, which covers Buckinghamshire, has named John Campbell as its new deputy chief constable.

    Mr Campbell joined the force in 2010 from Hampshire Police and has been assistant chief constable with responsibility for crime and operations.

  11. Signs of domestic abuse on receipts

    Shops in Hertfordshire will be putting messages about domestic abuse on the reverse of their receipts in conjunction with a Hertfordshire Police campaign.

    The messages will be on receipts from Homebase, Argos and the 99p Store for the campaign which aims to raise awareness of how to spot signs of abuse and to encourage people to report it.

    Sarah Taylor, from the project, said: "We wanted to raise awareness by doing something different to reach out to those who may be suffering from this crime, which destroys lives."

  12. Buckinghamshire sex abuse case: Eleven stand trial

    Opening the case against the eleven defendants, Oliver Saxby QC said the case represented "child sexual exploitation on a massive scale".

    He said one of the two girls involved told police that between the ages of 12 and 16 "she had sex with about 60 men, almost all Asian".

  13. Fire escape mum feels 'incredibly lucky'

    A mother and her three young children escaped from their house in Milton Keynes unharmed after a nearby car was set on fire.

    Mother Shiji Mol, who was uninjured, said: "I don't know what joy they are getting from that, why the person did it and what the benefit is? It nearly killed us, me and my three kids."

    Firefighters dealt with three suspected arsons in Eaglestone in the space of 20 minutes in the early hours of this morning.

  15. Pub name appeal: Ye Olde Fighting Cocks

    Calls have been made by PETA, an animal welfare group, to change the name of Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, a pub in St Albans, to 'Ye Olde Clever Cocks'.

    The establishment has carried its "fighting" name since 1872 and is known as the oldest pub in Britain, but PETA is calling for the name change to reflect "compassion for animals".

  16. Smart motorway: 20,000 drivers fined

    Earlier we told you that almost half of the 20,000 drivers fined for speeding on the M1 in Bedfordshire were travelling less than 70mph.

    The Highways Agency said: "Variable speed limits on smart motorways help to improve journey times, reduce congestion and keep journeys safe for millions of drivers every day.

    "Speed limits on smart motorways are clearly displayed, and the system has been rigorously tested to ensure it works accurately and fairly."

  18. Sex 'ring of horror'

    Eleven members of a "horrifying" child sex ring operating in Buckinghamshire stand trial at the Old Bailey today for abusing two vulnerable schoolgirls.

    The men variously deny a total of 52 sexual offences against the youngsters, said to have been committed between 2006 and 2012.

    Prosecutor Oliver Saxby QC said the girls, both from an "unstable background", were conditioned into believing their "horrifying" ordeal was normal.

  19. Changing rooms camera: Man charged with voyeurism

    A 63-year-old man has been charged with voyeurism after a camera was placed under a changing cubicle at The Chiltern Pools in Amersham.

    The man, who was arrested on Saturday, was also charged with causing or inciting a male child under 13 to engage in sexual activity.

    Two boys were changing when they saw a camera being placed under the partition between cubicles. When they challenged the man he is alleged to have made sexual suggestions to them, police said.

  20. Eleven in court for child sex abuse

    The Old Bailey has heard how 11 members of a "horrifying" child sex ring in Buckinghamshire abused two schoolgirls, taking advantage of their vulnerability on a "massive scale".

    Six men from Aylesbury, one from Milton Keynes, one from Chesham and one from Buckingham are charged with various sex offence charges including rape and sexual activity with a child.

    One girl, who was aged 12 or 13 at the time, alleges she was abused and passed between 60 men who had sex with her. The trial continues.

  21. Fire warning over games consoles

    A serious fire in Biggleswade caused by a games console overheating has led to warnings from Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

    The blaze started on Saturday afternoon when a bed caught fire because a console overheated when it was covered by clothes.

    Darren Cook, the officer in charge, said: "We are warning parents and children about the dangers of leaving games consoles switched on and unattended. They should always ensure that consoles and other electrical devices have adequate ventilation so they keep cool."

  23. Cottage fires in Bedfordshire

    Two cottages were severely damaged after a fire at Eversholt in Bedfordshire this weekend.

    Firefighters were called to Witts End in the village just before 22:00 on Friday when the roofs of two semi-detached cottages caught flame. They were called again at 06:30 the next day after the fire reignited.

    An elderly woman was treated for smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire was determined as a wood burner.

  24. Animal rights group want St Albans pub name change

    An animal rights campaign group want Britain's oldest pub to change its name.

    PETA want to change the name of Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in Abbey Mill Lane to Ye Olde Clever Cocks to reflect compassion for animals.

  27. Nearly 20,000 fined in M1 variable speed limit zone

    Nearly 20,000 people have been caught speeding on the M1 in Bedfordshire since the variable speed limit between junctions 10 and 13 was introduced in September 2013.

    An investigation by the JVS Show has revealed however that almost half of the 19,872 drivers fined were travelling at less than 70mph.

    Bedfordshire Police said it is their duty to enforce the variable limits, but as these are set by Highways England they can't explain or defend the policy.

    A woman who escaped after an arson attack on a car in Milton Keynes spread to her house has said she feels "incredibly lucky" that she could save her three children.

    Firefighters dealt with three suspected arsons in Eaglestone in the space of 20 minutes overnight.

    Mother Shiji Mol, who was unhurt, said: "I woke up at 02:00, heard some noise from downstairs, banging noise, then I looked through the window and the flames were coming out."

  31. 'Humiliating and belittling' kidnap ordeal

    A judge has described the 17-hour ordeal suffered by a 14-year-old girl who was kidnapped and tortured as "humiliating and belittling".

    The girl, who cannot be named, was taken to a flat in September last year after Caylen Candy (top) and Chyanne Powell, both 18, tried to rob her on her way to school in Waltham Cross.

    The pair, who have been jailed for six years three months and seven years six months respectively by St Albans Crown Court, made their victim strip naked, put a knife to her throat, cut her hair off, and forced her to sit in a freezing cold bath.

  32. Body find after burglary arrests

    Police in Milton Keynes have discovered a man's body after searching a house where two men were arrested in connection with a burglary.

    Officers were called to Neapland in Beanhill at 15:00 on Saturday where a 55-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm and a 22-year-old on suspicion of burglary and theft.

    About three hours later during a search, the body of a man in his 40s was found, which police said was unconnected with the arrests. The death is being treated as unexplained.

  36. Work starts on facility to build parts for the Army

    The first turfs have been cut at Lockheed Martin in preparation for the building of a multi-million pound development to build parts for the Army.

    The £5.5m facility at the firm's Ampthill site will be almost an acre in size, and will form part of the production line that will manufacture new turrets for the Warrior armoured vehicles and the Scout SV.

    Firefighters in Milton Keynes have dealt with three suspected arson attacks in the space of 20 minutes during the early hours this morning, one of which caused damaged to a house where a woman and three children were sleeping.

    Two cars and a lorry were set on fire in Eaglestone, between 01:45 and 02:05 with one in Abbotsfield setting light to a property.

    Crew commander Chris Bamford said: "Luckily before we arrived some neighbours of the lady and three children who were asleep had knocked on her door to raise the alarm and they were able to escape uninjured."

    Two youths who encouraged two teenage girls to torture a 14-year-old from Waltham Cross have also been jailed by St Albans Crown Court.

    David Appiah (left), 21, who arrived at the Waltham Cross flat where the acts of "degradation" took place was convicted of false imprisonment and causing a child to engage in sexual activity after a trial and sentenced to eight years six months.

    Sanjay Kalia, 18, who egged on the offenders via social media after being sent images of the girl the court heard, pleaded guilty to false imprisonment, making and sharing indecent photographs of a child and was sentenced to five years six months in detention.

    Two girls who kidnapped a 14-year-old in Waltham Cross and kept her prisoner for 17 hours, torturing her and recording the ordeal on their mobile phones, have been jailed.
