Former British and European middleweight champion Matthew Macklin has announced his retirement.

The 33-year-old won 35 of his 41 professional fights, but lose three world title challenges against Felix Sturm, Sergio Martinez and Gennady Golovkin.

"I wanted to know how good I was and test myself against the very best the sport had to offer and I can proudly say I did that," he said.

Leicester defender Danny Simpson will miss the club's Premier League trophy parade on Monday after being placed under a curfew.

Simpson, convicted of assaulting his ex-girlfriend, will no longer have to complete unpaid work due to press intrusion.

He denied strangling the mother of his child but was convicted last May.

However, the 29-year-old's lawyer complained that journalists had found where he was carrying out his community service, making it impossible.

A judge revoked the sentence and ruled he should serve a curfew instead.

France coach Didier Deschamps will announce his Euro 2016 squad live during the 8pm news bulletin on French TV channel TF1 tonight. 

The likes of Dimitri Payet, N’Golo Kante, Hatem Ben Arfa and Olivier Giroud are facing nervous waits to discover if they’ll be in or out. 

Christian Karembeu, a World Cup winner in 1998, told BBC World Service: “In our squad now we can expect surprises. 

"I think we can't forget Dimitri Payet and Hatem Ben Arfa from the list. They have been great this season but I think we need to understand how Didier is managing the group, taking care of the collective. And in the end only the chosen ones will make it to the Euros in France.”

“Anthony Martial will be important. In 1998 there was Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet and they were very young so we're counting on him."

As well as Roberto Martinez's relentless positivity (at least until the last few weeks), we'll miss seeing his stylish brown shoes on Premier League touchlines...

Daily Telegraph chief sports writer Paul Hayward draws a parallel between the circumstances of Roberto Martinez's sacking and Jose Mourinho's departure from Chelsea...

Everton have released a statement after conforming the departure of manager Roberto Martinez:

"The chairman and the board of directors would like to place on record their thanks for the dedication and commitment Roberto has shown during his three seasons with the club.

"Roberto has been a great ambassador for the club, conducting himself, at all times, with the utmost integrity and dignity. He secured the club its highest ever Premier League points total, a place in the last 16 of the Europa League and appearances in both domestic cup semi-finals.

"He has also played a key role in the development of several young players, managing their progression to the Everton first team and international honours."

We've known for a while but Everton have now officially confirmed that manager Roberto Martinez has left the club...

Chris Wilder has been given a three-year contract as he takes over at Sheffield United.

He will be assisted by Alan Knill, his number two at Northampton.

Speaking on behalf of the club's joint owners, Kevin McCabe said: "We are delighted to appoint Chris, he has a fantastic reputation. He understands the ethos of our club and is a modern 21st century manager."

Wilder said: "Obviously, people know my connection with the club as a supporter and former player and I want Bramall Lane to return to be an intimidating place - I don't want the players to feel it is a burden, playing in front of 20,000 fans."

Southend boss Phil Brown has been charged with misconduct by the FA after calling for assistant referee Barry Gordon to be "struck off" for his role in awarding a penalty in Sunday's 3-2 loss to Bury.

Ryan Lowe hit the winner after Sam McQueen was adjudged to have handled.  

An FA statement said: "It is alleged that on five separate occasions from the 93rd minute through to 30mins after the game, his language and/or behaviour was abusive and/or insulting and/or improper. 

"He has until 18:00 BST on 16 May to respond to the charge."

Enigmatic until the end.

Little was known about Manuel Pellegrini the man when he arrived in Manchester - and not much more has been unearthed in the three years since his departure.

Those who have worked with him say he has a tough streak - but he keeps it well hidden from the media.

The interesting thing now - beyond making sure City get the point they need to secure a top four place at Swansea on Sunday - is where he is going to go next.

In describing the Premier League as the "best in the world" safe to assume he would be quite keen to stay in it.

World champion Lewis Hamilton doesn't think much of the Kvyat-Verstappen swap.

The Briton believes Red Bull were wrong to demote Kvyat to Toro Rosso and replace him at Red Bull with teenager Verstappen.

"It is a good opportunity for one, but for the other it is very unfortunate," says Hamilton. "Red Bull has done well in bringing young talent forward but they need to be aware that young drivers need time to progress.

"There is so much to learn and a lot of pressure on the shoulders. To take a driver out of a team where he is comfortable, do I agree with it? That doesn't really matter but it is something I wouldn't have done."

Talking about awkward... 

At a news conference before this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, new Red Bull driver Max Verstappen (right) was sitting next to Daniil Kvyat, the man who went the opposite direction and was demoted from Red Bull to their sister team Toro Rosso.

Kvyat said: "The decision was a bit of a shock but it is what it is. I have always given my best and I will try to give a loud answer on the track.

"Toro Rosso is a team I very much like and they have given me a warm welcome. The goals are clear for the team and I will be giving my answers on the track." 

Eighteen-year-old Verstappen felt Red Bull were not taking a gamble on promoting him. He added: "It was a bigger risk to be so young in F1 and I've handled it well. Now it is about getting used to a new car and the things I've done in the factory give me a lot of confidence."

A reminder of the big news of the day, Everton's sacking of Roberto Martinez after three years in charge.

In case you were wondering, Everton have not officially confirmed the departure of Martinez.But it is only a matter of time.

All quiet at the club at the moment, with nothing new on the Toffees' Twitter account for three hours.

Mind you, they could just be getting ready for the club's annual awards tonight. 

That's going to be rather awkward for all involved.

Nottingham Forest confirm that first-team coach Paul Williams, who took temporary charge of first-team affairs for the final 10 matches of the season, has left the club.

Forest finished 16th in the Championship, with 55 points.
