  2. Police evacuate 33 properties in Dundee due to unsafe roof

    In conjunction with Dundee City Council, police have helped to evacuate Gourlay Yard in City Quay.

    Police Scotland said Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have temporarily secured some sections of the roof this afternoon, with permanent repairs expected to be carried out later this week.

    In discussion with the building factors, the council is coordinating accommodation for residents evacuated this evening.

    Barriers are in place at Gourlay Yard to prevent pedestrian access to the area and in the interests of safety, police have asked members of the public to not approach the building.

  3. Two teenagers arrested after a serious assault in Glasgow in September

    Two men were left in hospital after they were assaulted in Bath Street at about 03:30 on Saturday, 26 September

    They had been involved in an argument with a group of people and were seriously injured in an ensuing fight.

    Police Scotland said the arrested men, who are both 18, will be the subject of a report to the Procurator Fiscal in connection with the incident.

  4. Lorry driver charged with driving offence after attempting to take an articulated HGV over the Forth Road Bridge

    The bridge is currently closed to heavy goods vehicles while repair works takes place. 

    Police Scotland said traffic had to be stopped heading northbound on the bridge to allow the HGV to be turned around.

  5. Police divers search in the flooded River Dee for a missing man

    Two bags containing belongings of Terence Kilbride were washed up beside the river on Saturday. 

    The 48-year-old, from Warrington, was reported missing yesterday. 

    Police say he is known to go camping in the area and could have a bike with him.

    Officers are concerned after the recent bad weather.

  6. Hibs sign Norwegian defender Niklas Gunnarsson until the end of the season

    The 24-year-old joins on a loan deal from Vålerenga, subject to international clearance.

    On the Hibs website, Gunnarsson said: “I know the team are in good form this season and hopefully I will be able to make the team and help us win promotion.”

  7. Scammer who hid her partner's £53,000 a year salary so she could carry on receiving benefits has been jailed

    Anita Brown fraudulently claimed £27,000 of benefits for more than four years and used the money to shop online and for a hotel trip, a court heard. 

    She claimed she was living alone with her adult son at her home in Dundee. But investigators discovered that her partner - an offshore oil worker - was also living with them.

    The A83 at the Rest and Be Thankful in Argyll is to close overnight as efforts continue to make safe a 150 tonne boulder on the hillside. 

    The road closed for a time last week after a landslip during Storm Frank. It closed again on Monday amid concerns about the boulder, which is about 175m above the carriageway. 

    The Old Military Road diversion, which has been in use since 09:00, will close at 16:30. An alternative diversion via Dalmally will be in place overnight.

  9. Aberdeenshire MSP is criticised after claiming there "is no crisis" in North Sea oil employment

    Dennis Robertson made the comment during a Holyrood debate, where he said the North Sea workforce was "booming".

    Oil and Gas UK has estimated that 65,000 jobs have been lost during the current downturn in the industry.

    Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale said Mr Robertson's constituents would find his claims "astonishing".

  10. Scots becoming increasingly concerned about bumblebees, according to survey

    The Scottish Nature Omnibus Survey is carried out annually for Scottish Natural Heritage.

    Analysis of the results has suggested that media coverage of problems affecting the bees was likely to have raised awareness of the insects.

    Red squirrels were the survey's top conservation concern.

  11. Hamilton sign German forward Christopher Mandiangu from FC Eindhoven

    Scottish Premiership club Hamilton have announced the signing of 23-year-old German forward Christopher Mandiangu.

    Mandiangu, a former youth player at Borussia Monchengladbach, has been capped 22 times at German youth level.

    With 28 flood warnings remaining in place across Scotland, the misery continues for many communities.

    In Aberdeenshire, the River Don burst its banks at Inverurie forcing some residents out of their homes.

  13. Man who held a gun to a woman's head weeks after contacting her through an online dating site has been jailed

    The High Court in Edinburgh heard 44-year-old Kenneth Ellis' victim thought she was going to die. 

    Ellis admitted abducting and assaulting a woman last August in Edinburgh.

  14. Police appeal for witnesses after man is assaulted and robbed at shopping precinct in Edinburgh

    Officers say the 20-year-old victim was in the seating area of the New Kirkgate Shopping Centre in Leith when a man who was not known to him approached and began a conversation.

    A short time later, the suspect punched the man several times in the head, stole his wallet and then ran through the centre.

    The victim suffered minor facial injuries as a result.

    The attacker has been described as white and possibly a teenager. He was around 5ft 8ins tall, and he wore a black hooded top with black tracksuit bottoms. 

    Detective Constable Andy Cory of Gayfield CID said: "This was an unprovoked and violent attack that left the male victim with painful injuries to his face. We are very keen to trace the attacker as quickly as possible and various lines on inquiry are being carried out in an effort to trace him, including a review of the local CCTV network.”

  15. Initial assessments suggest 'imminent risk' of collapse to historic Abergeldie Castle has receded

    Assessments have been under way on the 16th Century Abergeldie Castle, which was left just feet from collapsing into the River Dee after severe flooding caused erosion to a nearby river bank.

    Vincent Docherty from Aberdeenshire Council, who has been involved in early recovery work, said the castle could be saved.

    He said: "At the moment our structural engineers are working with both the owner and insurers to make sure that basically they're able to prop that castle up and make sure it doesn't fall into the Dee."

    He added: The information that I've received today is that the imminent risk to the castle is over and that the building probably can be saved."

  16. Watch - New chief constable of Police Scotland describes job as high-point of his career

    Phil Gormley has been formally sworn in during a ceremony at the Scottish Police College at Tulliallan Castle.

    Mr Gormley said he was honoured to take up the post and promised to deliver a "police service that the people of Scotland can be proud of".

    The previous chief constable, Sir Stephen House, stood down at the end of November.

  17. Thieves steal money from cash machine in Perth after smashing their way into a supermarket

    The ATM at the Cooperative store on Argyll Road was robbed at 03:00 on Tuesday. 

    Police said the gang made off with a "quantity of cash".

    Officers are carrying out door-to-door inquiries and reviewing CCTV of the raid. 

    Police Scotland asked anyone who noticed suspicious activity near the store to contact them.

  18. Man who bullied and physically abused two former partners jailed for three-and-a-half years

    Alexander Montgomery admitted hitting and threatening Nadine Wilkinson between July 2005 and October 2007.

    The 34-year-old, from Ayr, also admitted abusing Lianne Bradley between January 2011 and March 2014.

    At the High Court in Glasgow, judge Lord Matthews also banned Montgomery from approaching or making contact with either woman.

  19. Six men appear in court in connection with the alleged fraudulent take-over of Rangers

    The club's former owner Craig Whyte and former chief executive Charles Green attended a preliminary hearing at the High Court in Edinburgh after prosecutors brought new charges.

    The former club secretary Martyn Withey, David Grier, David Whitehouse and Paul Clark, who worked for administrators Duff and Phelps, also appeared. 

    The men face a total of 15 charges that include fraud, conspiracy and involvement in serious organised crime.
