Bedford machete man Anthony Underwood sentenced

A man who ran through Bedford town centre wielding a hammer and machete was brought down by a police officer's "rugby tackle".

Shoppers scattered as Anthony Underwood, 27, of Croxden Way, Elstow, Bedfordshire, ran down Midland Road on 11 November as officers closed in.

He was eventually stopped by an unarmed sergeant.

Underwood, who pleaded guilty to affray and criminal damage, was given an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, at Luton Crown Court.
