Eric Bogle: Why I wrote an anti-war song about Gallipoli

One of the most famous songs about the Gallipoli campaign is 'And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda' written in 1971 by Scottish-born folk singer-songwriter Eric Bogle.

Speaking to 5 live Breakfast, Bogle said he was inspired by the Vietnam war but decided to set his song in Gallipoli as "it didn't matter where the song was situated because wars are all the same pointless exercise"

The song tells the story of a young Australian soldier who loses his legs in the battle and then sees younger generations stop caring about the veterans and their cause.

Eric Bogle performed the song at the 100 year commemorations in Gallipoli.
