Worn tyres prompt Isle of Man prosecution warning

Tyre defects, found by experts on parked cars during random spot checks in the capital of the Isle of Man, have prompted a prosecution warning.

Vehicle examiners found fifteen cars with inadequate tyres during a routine check last week on Douglas promenade.

A government spokesman said the drivers involved had been contacted and given seven days to sort out the problems.

He added that while the maximum penalty was £2,500, the Manx courts could also impose up to three penalty points.

The legal requirement is to have at least 1.6mm of tread over at least 75% of the tyre and the remaining 25% must show the base of the original tread pattern.

The government said more checks were planned over the next few weeks.
