The biggest day in British motorsport was overshadowed by a row over exploding tyres.

Mercedes' Nico Rosberg won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, but several drivers including his teammate Lewis Hamilton suffered punctures.

Hamilton dropped from first to last place before battling back to finish fourth.

He called the situation "unacceptable" and is worried it would only be sorted after someone was hurt.

Pirelli is investigating but it has also been suggested that a sharp kerb on one corner may have cut into the tyres.

Newsbeat spent the day at Silverstone with F1 fans.

John Ord, 23, Spencer Callow, 29

John saw several of the tyres explode: "It was quite worrying - you sit there and go, 'Wow, is he OK?'

"It can happen instantaneously and you don't know when it's going to happen."

Spencer and John say Lewis Hamilton is right to question Pirelli.

"These guys are putting their lives at risk," says Spencer.

"If there's five blow-ups here, it can happen at the next race. Something needs to be done and it needs to be done now."

Stuart Wills, 32, and Ian Ham, 24

Stuart says Hamilton put in the "drive of the day".

He says: "He's got to give himself a pat on the back to go from last right up to fourth."

Ian watched Hamilton crawl past after his rear left tyre exploded: "The tyres have been really problematic this year.

"I think they [Pirelli] have got to explain themselves."

Ryan Gough, 18 and James Desmond, 20

This was their first experience of a Grand Prix, and they say it was an "amazing weekend" despite the sunburn.

"I'm just glad that Lewis managed to finish in fourth - he deserved better," says Ryan.

"I think he'd be proud of himself to be back in fourth having been in last place."

They think the tyre failures may just have been a coincidence.

Fiona O'Neill, 30

Draped in a homemade 'Hamilton' flag, Fiona says Lewis' comeback was "brilliant, absolutely fantastic".

She added: "I just wish he'd had a couple of laps to take Alonso, which would have been even better.

"I was shocked - there must have been a problem on the track for three people to lose their tyres in such a short space of time."
