WW2 hand grenade destroyed in explosion in Nottingham

A live World War Two hand grenade has been found by caretakers clearing out a garage in Nottingham.

The grenade was found at a garage in Camden Close, Sneinton. A bomb disposal team was called, who took the grenade to nearby wasteland.

The team carried out a controlled explosion shortly after 16:00 GMT.

A loud bang was heard across the city centre and further afield and dust was seen flying about 30ft (9m) into the air.

The bomb disposal team deemed the hand grenade to be "live but blind", meaning it "hadn't quite gone off".

The explosion was heard as far away as the Arboretum park, on the opposite side of Nottingham city centre.

The grenade was found in a garage managed by Nottingham City Homes.

Spokeswoman Theresa Knight said the garage was being cleared out so it could be let to a new tenant.

"They had taken it out of the garage and once they had realised exactly what they had got they decided to call the police," she said.
