Why open your house to strangers?

Help

You may be proud of your home, but would you go so far as to invite members of the public to come and have a look around?

That is the premise of the annual Open House event in London, which takes place this weekend.

Thousands of people are expected to visit properties all over the capital, both residential and commercial, which include some of London's best-known landmarks.

It follows a nationwide Heritage Open Days event earlier this month which saw properties across the UK open their doors to interested visitors.

But why would anyone want to invite a group of complete strangers to inspect their house?

BBC News went to meet Richard Burton, a resident of Kentish Town in London, who has been part of the Open House event for 20 years and has shown many thousands of people around his self-designed, and self-built family home.
