    Thank you Glasgow

Unfortunately all great parties have to end at some time. And that time is now. The Commonwealth Games in Glasgow has been fantastic, but now it is over.

The baton has now been passed on to Gold Coast in Australia. The standard has been set, this is going to take some beating.

And that's also a goodbye from me. Thank you for joining us and for all of your comments and interaction. We hope you have enjoyed BBC Sport's coverage of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

All that's left is for me to point you in the direction of the Commonwealth Games index, where you will see all the stories and best clips for your enjoyment. Goodbye.

Which all brings us on to today, the final day of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Wales's Geraint Thomas was the man celebrating at the end as he won the fifth gold medal for his country.

    Lizzie Armitstead

England's Lizzie Armitstead won the women's race. She said: "It's been fantastic, I've been so used to silvers so it's great to get a gold. Today was a fantastic platform for us to show what women's cycling is all about."

Nick Matthew missed out on a second squash gold medal, losing in the men's doubles final.

"There are people for whom this serious business. Usain Bolt is at a part of his career where it is about giving something back. He didn't have to come but he knows what he is in world sport. I hope it has refreshed his desire to still be a part of our sport."

  8. Day 10 round-up

    Athletics

Usain Bolt brought the Commonwealth Games athletics to a fitting finale in Glasgow as he anchored Jamaica to 4x100m relay gold and then partied with the thrilled Hampden crowd.

    Usain Bolt

Bolt took the baton for the final leg level with England's Danny Talbot and, despite it being only his second competitive outing of the season, accelerated away in classic style as Talbot hung on for silver.

  9. Day 10 round-up

    Headlines

Usain Bolt, Nicola Adams and Tom Daley won Commonwealth gold on a pulsating penultimate day of Glasgow 2014, as England ensured they will finish top of the medal table.

  10. Team England hit medal target

England won more golds than Manchester 12 years ago and topped the medal table for the first time since 1986, the last time the Games were staged in Scotland.

Team England chef de mission Jan Paterson said: "Our aspiration was to put ourself back up the medal table, which we've done, and we are delighted with the style that we've done it.

"I am immensely proud of Team England, to come back after a disappointing time at the Dehli 2010 Commonwealth Games has been fantastic. We smashed our target.

"The average age of our athletes is 24 years old, so to have a young group that is well experienced should mean the future is bright for us."

One of the most emotional moments came on day nine from Scotland's Lynsey Sharp, who claimed silver in the women's 800m.

She had been on a hospital drip earlier that day after struggling with illness. At the closing ceremony, she told BBC Sport: "It's not sunk in yet, I've hardly spent any time on my own over the last 48 hours

"I remember before the games, a taxi driver said to me 'if you win a medal, it will change your life forever'. These Games have brought so much happiness and fun to the city."

  16. Day nine round-up

    Diving

Daley has had a great Games himself. On day nine he and team-mate James Denny won silver in the 10m event, while Jack Laugher and Chris Mears took 3m gold. Daley then went on to win 10m platform gold on day 10.

    Tom Daley
  17. Post update

    The party continues

    Tom Daley

Tom Daley is enjoying himself at the closing ceremony. England's diving gold medal winner said: "The whole Games has been amazing, and so friendly. It's nice to retain my title, but it's also been great seeing the younger divers coming through."

A great meteorological sound-bite from Kirani James, Grenada's 400m track gold medallist. "It's been an amazing experience. Scotland showed itself as true fans of athletics, and of the Commonwealth Games.

"Of course, you can't control the weather, you just have to deal with it. To be honest, the crowd cancel out the weather with the warmth of their support."

David Katoatau is always going to be a hero in Kiribati, a tiny group of islands approximately 2,000 miles north east of Australia.

His nation had never been on the podium, but his victory in the 105kg weightlifting competition saw him achieve that landmark. And he celebrated in style, by showing off his dancing moves. Good feet for a big man.

  25. Day seven round-up

    Athletics

Greg Rutherford added Commonwealth long jump gold to his Olympic title on a strong day for England at Glasgow 2014.

    Greg Rutherford

Rutherford, who won silver in Delhi four years ago, had an epidural injection in the build-up to make it to qualifying after pulling out of the Diamond League event here with injury.

But after his first round 8.12 metres was matched by South Africa's Zarck Visser, his championship pedigree told as he produced a third round 8.20m to snatch a lead that none of his rivals could threaten.

  26. Day seven round-up

    Gymnastics

Claudia Fragapane (Gold Medal) is kissed by compatriots Ruby Harrold (Silver Medal) and Hannah Whelan (Bronze Medal)

Claudia Fragapane leads an England 1-2-3 in the women's all-around gymnastics. A remarkable performance from the 16-year-old.

She scored 14.733 to win gold with a total of 56.132, just ahead of Ruby Harrold (55.232) and Hannah Whelan (54.699). Tears of joy all round in the England camp.

  27. Change of outfit for Kylie

    Kylie Minogue

"I'm pretty sure there's a few lovers in the audience tonight." Kylie gets to the point. She has now changed out of the 'saucy basque' (see 22:17) and is now wearing a short white skirt.

Can't Get You Out of My Head, one of her best known classics, is thrilling the crowd now.

  28. Day six round-up

    Swimming

There were even more swimming golds for British swimmers on day six, including for England's Ben Proud and Wales' Georgia Davies.

  29. The view from Down Under

A banner at the closing ceremony

Quentin Hull, of ABC Radio in Australia, tells BBC Radio 5 live's Mark Pougatch about how the games have gone down with the 2018 host nation.

"Its been judged as a pretty good games, we knew the strength of the home nations would be pretty good after London 2012. You have pumped a lot of money into sport like we did around Sydney 2000.

"But you've been wonderful hosts, as ever - two years ago it was magnificent in London and Glasgow has been the same, as it needed to be after the shambles of Delhi."

It's early Monday morning in Australia. Are they 'doing the Locomotion' too? Let's hope so.

  30. Do the Locomotion

We have seen a host of records fall during this Commonwealth Games. We may have just witnessed another. I don't believe there has ever been as many athletes 'doing the Locomotion' as Kylie sings loudly. Another proud moment for the Games there.

  31. Day six round-up

    Athletics

    Andrew Osagie

There was a bit of argy-bargy during the men's 800m as England's Andrew Osagie and Joe Thomas of Wales had a few cross words at the end of the third heat after the pair collide while desperately trying to grab the third qualifying place.

Osagie, who ended up on the track just after crossing the line and finishing third, ahead of Thomas in fourth, tells BBC One that he didn't do anything wrong.

"He shouted at me at the end saying 'what was I doing', but I was running as straight as I can," says Osagie. "There wasn't a gap there. A similar thing happened to me in the trials and that's why I had a problem with my hamstring as I got caught a couple of times then."

The stewards don't agree. Osagie is thrown out of the competition.

  32. Day six round-up

    I don't believe it

    Greg Rutherford

Nothing was going to come between Commonwealth and Olympic long jump champion Greg Rutherford and his fans in Glasgow - not even the stewards!

Rutherford went as far as dodging the best efforts of an official to usher him away in his attempts to "give back a little bit" back to supporters by signing autographs and posing for photos with them after qualifying for the final.

Among the lucky ones to secure a selfie with him after he had clinched his latest gold was Kirsty Anderson: "Gold for our boy, well deserved #gregrutherford #2014athletics #teamengland"

  33. #bbcglasgow2014

    Commonwelfies

    Ian Thorpe and Chris Hoy

What do you get when you cross the Commonwealth Games with a selfie? The answer, of course, is the #commonwelfie - the social media craze that swept Glasgow.

Perhaps the best of all was delivered by none other than Sir Chris Hoy who teamed up with fellow Commonwealth and Olympic great Ian Thorpe to produce the king of #commonwelfies: "Thanks to @IanThorpe and @Mel_Mclaughlin for having me on your show, great to meet you both! #commonwelfie"

It was an eventful stay in his native Scotland in the selfie-stakes for Hoy after he and his wife Sarra embarked on an eventful taxi journey: "Stopped at a set of traffic lights and a pedestrian opened the door jumped in and took a selfie."

  34. Post update

    Victoria Pendleton

    Kylie Minogue

BBC Radio 5 live's John Murray asked Victoria about what Kylie is wearing as she struts her stuff at Hampden...

"I would say its a basque - a corset or a basque, I'm not sure how to differentiate between the two. It's a bit saucy, isn't it?"

  35. Day six round-up

    Gymnastics

We mentioned the rise of Claudia Fragapane. Well day six was the start of an incredible Commonwealth Games for her.

Ruby Harrold, Hannah Whelan, Kelly Sim, Rebecca Downie and Claudia Fragapane of England

England's women emulated the achievement of their male team-mates by winning gold in the gymnastics team final at the Hydro Arena.

Rebecca Downie, Fragapane, Ruby Harrold, Hannah Whelan and Kelly Simm held off Australia to win, with Wales putting in a superb display for bronze.

There was also team gold for England as Louis Smith, Sam Oldham, Kristian Thomas, Max Whitlock and Nile Wilson won the men's title, but Oldham had to go for an MRI scan after falling heavily on his ankle midway through the competition.

    Emma McKeon (Australia, swimming)

    Emma McKeon

What a Commonwealth Games for Australian swimmer Emma McKeon. The 20-year-old won individual gold in the 200m freestyle, and was part of the gold-medal 4 x 100m freestyle, 4 x 200m freestyle and 4 x 100m medley relay teams. She also won bronze medals in the 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly finals.

  37. Glasgow's 'standout' Games

Commonwealth Games Federation chief executive Mike Hooper has praised Glasgow 2014 as the "standout Games" in the movement's 84-year history.

"With the great spread of nations winning medals, the quality of performance from the athletes, the extraordinary success of the home nation, the wonderful crowd support and venues, the superb planning and management by the organising committee and that of the Games' partners, the buzz in the city, the friendliness, a legacy plan in place and the wonderful work of the Clyde-siders, these have been great Games," Hooper said.

"And in my view, they are the standout Games in the history of the movement."

  38. So that's that

Before Kylie took to the stage, Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex was given a chance to address the crowd. This is what he said: "I call on all the athletes from the countries and territories of the Commonwealth to come together in Gold Coast, Queensland to celebrate the 21st Commonwealth Games in four years' time.

"Until then, I proclaim the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games closed."

  39. Post update

  40. Post update

    Baroness Grey-Thompson

11-time Paralympic champion and BBC Sport expert on 5 live

"I went to every closing ceremony I could, its a nice chance to see your mates from other countries. This has been a great party, and even at the opening ceremony I've never seen athletes happier to be there."

  41. Day five round-up

    Athletics

    Men's 100m finish

Kemar Bailey-Cole came arrowing through the centre of the field from the halfway point to win the showpiece event, the men's 100m. A clear winner, but the eye was drawn to the battle behind him where a stooping Adam Gemili snatched second for England as a perfect response to Michael Johnson's criticism from the previous day.

  42. Kylie is on

It is the moment the athletes have been waiting for. As Kylie Minogue gets the crowd dancing.

    Jazz Carlin

Jazz Carlin, 23, punches the air as she realises she is Commonwealth champion. New Zealand's Lauren Boyle got silver while Canada's Brittany Maclean was third. It had been a quiet opening four days for Wales, but the Welsh dragon was roaring on day five. Carlin's time was a Games record 8.18.11.

Elsewhere, Ollie Hynd completed a clean sweep of titles in the SM8 200m category with a superb victory to win England's first Para-swimming gold of Glasgow 2014.

The 19-year-old who is the Paralympic, World and European champion in the event, clocked two minutes 22.86 seconds.

Sophie Taylor clinched another gold in the pool for England as the 18-year-old produced a strong finish to win the 100m breaststroke final.

With all of this talk of Australia, let's highlight two of their best performers - and they came from the same family.

Cate and Bronte Campbell won eight medals between them, with Cate collecting three golds, one more than sister Bronte.

In the women's 100m freestyle final on Monday, Cate won gold and Bronte claimed silver. But there was no animosity or jealousy.

Instead the siblings were screaming in celebration together and holding hands at the end. Definitely one for the Campbell family album.

  50. Pearson extends an invitation

Back at Hampden Park... Australia's Sally Pearson, reigning women's Commonwealth 100m hurdles champion says: "The Gold Coast is where I live and train and in 2018 it will provide athletes and spectators with world-class sporting and recreational facilities.

"Set against the spectacular backdrop of the Gold Coast and Queensland, friends will be made, records will be broken so come on down. It's where Australia shines."

Scotland's Charlie Flynn, a 20-year-old postman, won boxing gold in the lightweight category and was in exuberant form afterwards.

Laura Weightman won silver in the 1500m, and her mum told BBC Radio 5 live her athlete daughter is more than a bit partial to battered sausage and chips.

Lynsey Sharp's silver in the 800m was one of the most emotional moments of the games, and she revealed how surgery, plus sickness the night before the final were not going to stop her.

Well, the duo of Paul Foster and Alex Marshall won the bowls pairs event to win a record-breaking 12th gold medal for Scotland.

  65. Day five round-up

    I don't believe it

Australia to Scotland is an awful long way. If you have travelled from down under then you want to put in a good showing. What you definitely don't want to do, is what 20-year-old Jake Stein did.

    Jake Stein

Two false starts in the first event of the decathlon, the 100m, saw him disqualified from that race, therefore scoring no points and ending his medal hopes before the first starting gun has been fired.

He was angry at himself and didn't know what to do. He stomped around at the back of the track, sat down in the seats with his head in his hands and then had to go back to his starting blocks when he was formally shown the red card.

  66. Could Wales host a future Games?

    Baroness Grey-Thompson

11-time Paralympic champion on BBC Radio 5 live

"I think Wales would bid, the logical thing would be a bid from Cardiff but it would have to a wider bid, a south Wales effort including Swansea and Newport. It could be done, but it would be challenging to find the money."

Image caption: Meet the Commonwealth Games #71club

BBC Sport's Ollie Williams pulled together a fascinating collection of stories from all 71 nations and territories at the Games.

The first member of the #71club was Malaysia's track cyclist Mohd Azizulhasni Awang, who describes himself as "the pocket rocket man."

The last was Scotland's mountain biker Kerry MacPhee, who says her sporting talent came from herding sheep as a child on the Outer Hebrides island of South Uist.

  68. Most successful athletes

    South Africa - rugby sevens

    South Africa

New Zealand at rugby sevens was like the Brazilian football team of the early 1970s, or the West Indies cricket side later in the same decade - absolutely unbeatable.

The All Blacks had won the Commonwealth Games gold medal in each of the four times it had been held previously. But this was not their year as they lost 17-12 to South Africa in the final.

  69. Day four round-up

    Quote of the Day

BBC pundit Michael Johnson was not overly impressed after England's Adam Gemili is the fastest qualifier to move into the final of the men's 100m final.

"When he runs well, I'd like to see him look a little more like he expects that, not like, 'Oh my god, that was really great,'" says Johnson.

  70. Post update

Right, the Prince has finished. So let's continue our look back at the highlights. We had reached day four.

  71. 'They have been the peoples' Games

Commonwealth Games Federation president HRH Prince Imran: "The Commonwealth Games are known as the friendly games. These have been more than that. They have truly been the peoples' Games. Thank you Clyde-siders you have been truly amazing."

  72. Post update

    Chris McLaughlin

BBC Sport's Commonwealth Games reporter on BBC Radio 5 live

"This a man who knows how to work a crowd, but I wouldn't necessarily disagree with him!"

  73. 'The best Games ever'

His Royal Highness Prince Imran, the president of the Commonwealth Games, knows how to work a crowd. "Glasgow, it is a job well done," says the prince, which is received by huge cheers from the Hampden Park crowd.

"You have delivered the best Games ever," he says, before adding the Glasgow slogan, "Pure, dead brilliant."

Any more of this and he will be carried out on someone's shoulders. The Prince is having a better closing ceremony than opening one, after he struggled to open the Queen's Baton with Her Majesty the Queen watching on.

  74. Day four round-up

    Shooting

    England's Charlotte Kerwood

England's Charlotte Kerwood won her second gold in the double trap event, adding to her victory the last time the discipline was in the Commonwealth Games in 2006.

"It feels amazing," she said. "The Commonwealth Games seem to like me and it's a good event to come to. I was relaxed and laughing because I didn't realise that I was five targets ahead and started thinking there was no pressure."

Countryman Steven Scott then won gold in the men's event.

  75. Another accolade for Jones

    Frankie Jones receives her award

Frankie Jones's Commonwealth Games has just got even better as she receives the David Dixon Award, handed out to mark one competitor's contribution to her team and a spirit of fair play.

She won six medals, including one gold, in the rhythmic gymnastics events.

  76. Day four round-up

    Track cycling

The Commonwealth Games featured a host of Para-sports in Glasgow. Among those celebrating were England's Sophie Thornhill and pilot Helen Scott, who won tandem time trial gold medals.

    Sophie Thornhill and Helen Scott

Elsewhere on the track on day four, England's Laura Trott won gold in the women's points race at the Commonwealth Games despite being laid low with a kidney infection.

  77. Moment of the Games

    #bbcglasgow2014

Faith Martin: David Weir is such a role model for disabled people like me - believe and you can achieve.

Kat: Best parts of #Glasgow2014 - integrating para & able body competitions.

Chris: It was great to see the humility, passion and determination of all the athletes no matter what position they came.

  78. Day four round-up

    Track cycling

Speaking of incredible stories, Isle of Man cyclist Jonny Bellis has been through a lot, but unfortunately he was denied the opportunity of extending that story as he withdrew from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow because of a knee injury.

The 25-year-old was selected to compete in the points and scratch races on the track. He tweeted: "Feel like I have let so many people down, but it is out of my control. I am really disappointed."

    Jonny Bellis

But Bellis's story is an incredible one. He spent a month in a coma after being knocked from a scooter while training abroad in 2009. Doctors feared he would be paralysed, he suffered a stroke and his weight plummeted, but 10 months later he was back racing.

But there was to be no Hollywood ending for the Manxman.

  79. Day four round-up

    Athletics

We have seen some great stories during this year's Commonwealth Games. One of the best has come from England's Steven Way, who claimed a 10th-place finish in the men's marathon.

Seven years ago he could never have imagined that he would be in this position. Weighing more than 16 stone and smoking 20 cigarettes a day, Way decided to change his life.

    Steven Way

Fast forward to 2014 and Way, now 40, runs up to 140 miles in training each week around his day job in a bank. At one moment he led the race, which was eventually won by Australia's Michael Shelley.

Reflecting on the integration of para-sports in the Games: "There's only 20 countries that have sent athletes in the para-events. We need to have a lot more.

"It's important for the Paralympic movement, we need to make sure we do more over the next four years before the Gold Coast Games, especially for our female athletes."

  83. Here come the bagpipes

I can't believe it has taken us 15 minutes to hear our first bagpipes being played. And there are hundreds of them. It is a sea of drummers, bagpipers and military officials. Numerous athletes are desperate to get their pictures of the marching band.

  85. Day four round-up

    Track cycling

Scotland enjoyed a cycling love-in at the Games as they won a total of five medals in the velodrome.

Chris Pritchard proposes to his partner

And the romance extended beyond the track thanks to Chris Pritchard.

The Scot, 31, got off his bike at the end of the keirin event and climbed into the crowd to propose to girlfriend Amanda Ball.

The gesture stunned the watching crowd, if perhaps not Amanda herself, who thankfully said "yes."

"I have been nagging for long enough," she said. "The ring is just like the one I took a picture of and left on the iPad." Lovely.

  86. 'A lot of love'

There's a lot of love in Hampden Park tonight. And that's not the only time that has been seen at this Commonwealth Games.

The Shetlander is Scotland's youngest ever competitor and was the youngest competing in this Commonwealth Games.

Elsewhere in the pool, Fran Halsall won her second gold of these Games and 10th Commonwealth medal overall, as she won the 50m butterfly after Siobhan-Marie O'Connor, 18, had won the 200m individual medley.

Scotland's men's 4x200m freestyle team won silver, while Hannah Miley and England's Liam Tancock both added bronze medals to their medal tally.

  89. Day three round-up

The beauty of the Commonwealth Games is that people of all ages could compete.

England's Mick Gault won bronze in the 10m air pistol event to win a record-equalling 18th Commonwealth Games medal.

The 60-year-old from Norfolk retired through illness after Delhi 2010 but came back to try and match the mark set by Australian shooter Phillip Adams, which he achieved in Glasgow. Gault later announced his retirement from the sport later in the week.

  90. 'We're going to do some singing'

    Deacon Blue

"We're going to do some singing tonight," says the lead singer of Deacon Blue. The Glasgow crowd scream extremely loudly. I had a feeling they would've done so any way.

A lively start to the closing ceremony and there are smiles all around, as the athletes continue to stream into the arena waving to loved ones.

Also coming in are 200 members of the Glasgow emergency services, who are also given the chance to enjoy the moment and wave to friends and family.

  91. Most successful athletes

  92. Shout

    English athletes party

Speaking of celebrations, many, many athletes celebrated by shouting. It is then only fitting that Lulu blasts out her best-well known song 'Shout' to get the party started. Athletes are coming into Hampden Park and the party is under way.

  93. Day three round-up

    Weightlifting

Englishwoman Zoe Smith won gold in the women's 58kg category in the weightlifting, and then produced one of the best celebrations of the Games, with an excellent back flip.

    Zoe Smith
  94. Closing ceremony

It is closing ceremony time. We know we will be seeing Kylie Minogue, Deacon Blue and Lulu. What else will Glasgow have in store?

  95. Triathlon

Triathlon team gold medallist Jonny Brownlee revealed it was a spur of the moment decision by his brother and fellow gold medallist Alistair for them to attend the closing ceremony.

He tells BBC Sport: "Alistair came for a run and knocked on my front door. He said we should come up for the ceremony. That was only about five hours ago."

  96. Moment of the Games

    #bbcglasgow2014

Diane Thomson: The Hampden roar and the noise of the crowd supporting athletes in all the venues brought out the best in all the athletes

Ricky: Ah, Deacon Blue are playing tonight - the prayers of a grateful nation have truly been answered

Emma Cresswell: Asking us to choose one standout moment is just cruel, far too many to chose from! Great games & respect to all participants

  97. Day three round-up

    Quote of the Day

English long jumper Greg Rutherford was not overly impressed with some noisy neighbours in the athletes' village. He said: "Our captain is going to have a word and I think it will generally be spoken about. It's not ideal. We'll ask them politely if they can keep it down."

Rutherford's time in Glasgow would soon get a lot more enjoyable.

  98. Day three round-up

    Swimming

England's Fran Halsall was the fastest qualifier going into the final of the women's 50m freestyle, and she carried that form into the final to take the gold medal. She recorded the fastest time of the year and a new Commonwealth Games record of 23.96 seconds.

Claire Quigley: Really sad that the games are ending...it has been so great & Glasgow has been the best host.

Mark Clayton: My favourite moment is about to come. Kylie time. On a serious note the whole Commonwealth Games has been brilliant.

Easy, Mark, pace yourself. Kylie will be coming on soon enough.

    Chris McLaughlin

    BBC Sport's Commonwealth Games reporter

"Look around the city centre and the regeneration of the East End you see a modern city that is moving on. The one thing that the organisers did not worry about was the welcome from Glaswegians, not just the volunteers but the people all around the city."

  101. 'Everyone is so, so proud'

Burton has been speaking on BBC One. He says: "It has been nerves, excitement, pride. That has been the over-riding emotion. Everyone is so, so proud to be part of the most successful Scottish Commonwealth Games team ever."

  102. Day three round-up

    Judo

There was a gold in the judo for Scotland's Euan Burton, who had carried his country's flag during the opening ceremony, as he claimed victory in the under 100kg category. His success came just after wife Gemma Gibbons, representing England, won a silver in her event.

    GEmma Gibbons

Gibbons said on Twitter: "The most fantastic and amazing husband who went one better and brought home the gold for our family! #soproud."

But Burton was not the only Scot celebrating gold. Fellow judoka Sarah Adlington won the women's under 78kg gold and Christopher Sherrington clinched the men's 100kg title.

  103. Day three round-up

    I don't believe it

Rebecca mentions Usain Bolt, and the fastest man in the world arrived in town on day three - and it was chaos.

His press conference saw him fielding questions on every strange subject possible from whether he had a kilt to what he thought of the situation in the Middle East and whether he could pose for a 'selfie' later in the day.

An interview in the Times alleging that he had been less than favourable about the Commonwealth Games then caused controversy, although Bolt denied those allegations, saying the event was great, apart from the rainy, cold weather in Scotland.

    Usain Bolt
  104. Moment of the Games

Heather: I've never enjoyed sport so much! Educational, emotional & inspirational. And great fun too.

Nicola Norris: So proud to be Glaswegian. So many favourite moments. Glasgow rocks.

  110. An honour to carry flag - Richardson-Walsh

    Kate Richardson-Walsh

England women's hockey captain Kate Richardson-Walsh on the honour of carrying her nation's flag at the closing ceremony.

"I'm emotional, as always. It's such an honour, particularly because the whole of Team England has performed so well, it adds an extra bit of pride," said Richardson-Walsh, whose hockey team won silver after a dramatic penalty shootout loss to Australia on Saturday.

"I'm just really excited and hoping that I don't trip over!"

Team England chef de mission Jan Paterson added: "Kate has brought home four medals from four Commonwealth Games, she is a fantastic role model for the team and it was a team vote that decided she would be the flag bearer."

Richardson-Walsh will be in action later tonight. The closing ceremony begins at 21:00 BST.

    I don't believe it

We don't know what Alex Salmond thought of his fellow countryman Gavin Rumgay, but it certainly made the rest of us laugh.

Nine-time national table tennis champion Gavin Rumgay decided to give himself a 'wedgie' and then dance around the table like the third member of The Proclaimers after fighting back from two games down to beat Canada's Pierre-Luc Theriault.

    Scotland's Gavin Rumgay

While the home crowd lapped up the 29-year-old's antics, the officials were not as amused - reprimanding him like a naughty schoolboy.

"I'm just in the zone and it happened. I got a warning and a yellow, but it's a funny yellow card," he said.

  113. Rhythmic Gymnastics

Wales legend Jones will be back - as a coach

Frankie Jones bowed out on a high, claiming a gold and five silver medals in her final competition before retirement. The Welsh rhythmic gymnast isn't done with the Commonwealth Games, however.

The 23-year-old spoke to the BBC at Hampden Park before the closing ceremony: "It's been an incredible experience, the best thing I've done in my sporting career. It's the last competition for me as an athlete but I hope to be involved in future Commonwealth Games as a coach."

Scotland's Daniel Wallace was a gold medallist on day two and pretended he was William Wallace after shouting "for freedom" after winning gold in the men's 400m individual medley.

    Daniel Wallace

Apparently he had been watching Braveheart staring Mel Gibson a little bit too closely just before his final.

Elsewhere, England's Chris Walker-Hebborn smashed the Games record to take the victory in the 100m backstroke, while countryman Liam Tancock finished third to win his eighth medal Commonwealth Games medal.

There was another Englishman celebrating as Ben Proud won the men's 400m individual medley, winning in a new British record time.

"A massive shout out to the Scottish fans, they've been amazing. I've been back to Stirling training again since the swimming competition finished here. I've got the Europeans in a couple of weeks so I've got to keep working. I'm looking forward to the closing ceremony."

Scotland pole vaulter Gregor MacLean: Closing ceremony hype! #Glasgow2014 #closingceremony #CWG2014

  139. Welcome back

Hello there, I'm Michael Emons and I will be guiding you through the last action of the 2014 Commonwealth Games - the closing ceremony - as well as looking back at those moments that shocked, entertained and inspired us.

  140. Party time

This has been the first Commonwealth Games to be held in Scotland for a generation and what an event it has been.

We have seen a few tears along the way, but there has been great success for the home nations.

    Usain bolt

But everyone came to have fun and some even packed their best dancing moves.

So let's finish in the best way possible. It's party time.

  141. Back soon

So we are taking a little break now and we will be back at 19:55 BST for a full round-up from what has been a magical Commonwealth Games. Join us then, and we will also have full coverage of the closing ceremony, which begins at 21:00 BST. Don't miss it, we will see you then.

  142. Post update

    Medal table

So it has been the most successful Commonwealth Games ever for both England and Scotland, while Wales have won more medals than ever before.

  143. BBC Coverage

So that concludes the action from the 2014 Commonwealth Games. How was it for you?

But the fun isn't over just yet.

We will be having the closing ceremony of the Games later on, with guest appearances from Kylie Minogue, Lulu and Deacon Blue. It will be emotional.

  144. Squash

David Palmer and Cameron Pilley (Australia) - men's doubles

    Men's squash

Australia lost the first game but won the next two as the pairing of David Palmer and Cameron Pilley defeated England's Adrian Grant and Nick Matthew in a thrilling final.

That's two gold medals in two hours for Palmer after his earlier success with Rachael Grinham in the mixed doubles earlier today.

  145. Athletics

England sprinter Jodie Williams on Twitter: Time to go home. Glasgow, it's been amazing, my first Commonwealth Games and coming away with a silver and bronze. Couldn't be happier.

Williams won a silver in the women's 200m and was part of the quartet that gained a bronze in the sprint relay.

  146. Squash

    Men's doubles final

Women's squash world champion Laura Massaro on BBC Radio 5 live: "The English look a little tentative right now. The nerves are showing and Palmer is looking a bit tired. However, there is no way he is going to give up this fight for the gold."

  147. Squash

    Men's doubles final

Australia are 8-6 ahead in the deciding game. England were 3-1 up in the game. Can they fight back to take the gold?

  149. Road cycling

    Men's road race

    Chris Boardman

Olympic cycling champion and BBC Sport summariser

"All of these medals and successes are stacking up for Geraint Thomas. People like him - the real bike riders - will only fully take this in at the end of their careers. He has so many achievements - and I don't think he has finished yet."

Thomas has just been presented with his gold medal, the fifth won by Wales at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

  151. Future events

Earlier (16:11), we mentioned that Edmonton and Durban are battling to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Gideon Sam, president of South Africa Olympic committee and part of the Durban bid team, tells BBC World Service: "There is no doubt that it is Africa's time and many people feel that.

"Let the Commonwealth Games family all get a change to stage the games. We are part of the Commonwealth and want them to be our guests for the first time. We have the infrastructure to deliver. This is Africa's time. This is Durban's time."

A decision on who hosts the 2022 competition will be made in September 2015.

  152. Road Cycling

    Men's road race

    Victoria Pendleton

BBC Sport cycling expert on BBC Radio 5 live

    Peter Kennaugh

"Pete Kennaugh's early move was possibly the best move of the Games. He showed so much determination and grit.

"It's not an easy thing to do, especially in the conditions today, and it breaks my heart when you put so much effort into it and the others catch you up. I think he will have future success. He gave everything he could."

Kennaugh's move, which saw him sprint clear early on in the men's road race before being caught at about the 120km mark, did not lead to a medal as he finished eighth in the men's road race.

  155. Road cycling

    Men's road race

    Geraint Thomas

More from Commonwealth Games champion Geraint Thomas on BBC One. "I think Pete (Kennaugh) wanted a few of us to come with him. I was going to go but my water bottle came loose and by the time I had secured it he was gone. Unfortunately for him he was then on his own. He had bought his ticket by then and he just had to commit.

"Winning is unbelievable. I never expected it. Coming off the tour I was tired at end of that. I thought it would be a massive challenge to get a result here but the motivation was there.

"I was buzzing to compete for Team Wales. I just got stuck in and it couldn't have got any better. Carrying the flag tonight will be a massive honour. That is just as good as winning a race and that means a lot to me and my family."

  156. Road cycling

    Men's road race

England's Scott Thwaites, bronze medallist in the road race, on BBC One says: "The conditions were unbelievable. At times you could barely see. It was still a great race, however, and a great experience.

"Geraint was so strong I always knew that (his breakaway) was coming. It was just a matter of time before he went for the gold medal.

"My legs were shot at the end, Jack (Bauer) is a super-strong guy but he just got me in the end. I'm a little bit disappointed (not to have got second) but I'm just happy to be on the podium."

  159. Road cycling

    Men's road race

    Geraint Thomas

Commonwealth Games champion Geraint Thomas on BBC One says:"That was such a grim day. To be honest, I felt terrible at the start. I was thinking of just stopping I felt that bad. Everyone else seemed to come down to my level then.

"I was surprised how easily I went away. When I had the puncture I thought 'what have I got to do?' but fortunately I had a decent enough gap to stay in front. It was a good day in the end."

Jack Bauer (New Zealand) - men's road race

    Jack Bauer

It has been a long day for Jack Bauer, but he has a silver medal to show for all of his efforts. The New Zealander holds off England's Scott Thwaites in a sprint finish, with the Englishman winning the bronze medal.

  162. Road cycling

Geraint Thomas (Wales) - men's road race

    Geraint Thomas

He may have had a scare on the last lap, but Geraint Thomas recovers from his late puncture to win gold for Wales in the men's road race.

  164. Future events

The Commonwealth Games are heading to the Gold Coast in Australia in four years' time, but where will we be going after that?

There are two cities bidding to host the 2022 Games - Durban in South Africa and Edmonton in Canada.

Reg Milley, head of the Edmonton bid, tells BBC World Service that some new events could feature if his city is awarded the event.

"We have been in Glasgow to look, listen and learn," says Milley. "We have been talking to the young people here and in the wider Commonwealth about what they want in 2022. Do we need three on three basketball, beach volleyball, BMX and skateboard? We need to renew and stay relevant."

  165. Road cycling

    Chris Boardman

Olympic cycling champion and BBC Sport summariser

"I can't speak! It was an incredibly slow change. My heart was in my mouth then. No one deserves it more than Thomas. He still has an advantage which is certainly something.

"But you could see his cornering then was more tentative on the new wheel. It's not a procession any more. He needs to drive all the way to the line. It is still a possibility for the other duo. If he has used up all his energy to make that attack then they have a chance."

  166. Road cycling

    Men's road race

A potential disaster for Tanni's hair, a potential disaster for Geraint Thomas, a potential disaster for Wales.

He suffers a puncture to his front wheel, and although it is soon fixed, his lead is slashed down to 20 seconds. Drama on the streets of Glasgow.

The race looked finished, but that unscheduled stop has given England's Scott Thwaites and New Zealand's Jack Bauer hope of catching him.

Olympic cycling champion and BBC Sport summariser

  171. Road cycling

    Men's road race

We mentioned earlier than Geraint Thomas is aiming to win the fifth gold medal for Wales at Glasgow 2014.

Well, with 11.5km to go, he has made his move, sprinting ahead of New Zealand's Jack Bauer and England's Scott Thwaites. Has he gone too early? Can he hold on? We will soon find out.

    Chris Boardman

Olympic cycling champion and BBC Sport summariser

    Men's doubles final

The men's doubles final will go into a decider after Danny Chrisnanta and Chayut Triyachart of Singapore take the second game 21-12 against Wee Kiong Tan and Wei Shem Goh of Malaysia.

  176. Road cycling

    Men's road race

The fact we have two laps to go doesn't sound so bad. But with each lap around the streets of Glasgow covering 14km, you get some idea just how gruelling the men's road race is.

We have about 28 of the 168km left and it seems to be between three men for the medals. England's Scott Thwaites, New Zealand's Jack Bauer and Geraint Thomas of Wales are the men fighting out to be on the top step of the podium.

  177. Gold Medal

Palmer and Grinham (Australia) - squash mixed doubles

    Australia dominate a rally

Australia's Rachael Grinham and David Palmer hold their nerve to beat England's Peter Barker and Alison Waters 11-8 11-10 to win gold in the mixed doubles final.

It is a first Commonwealth gold medal for 38-year-old Palmer, who came out of retirement to bid for that elusive title, and his seventh medal in all.

  178. Post update

    Medal table

So this is the medal table as we stand. It has been the best ever Commonwealth Games for both England and Scotland. Geraint Thomas is still in the top three of the men's road race cycling and is hoping to win the fifth gold of the Games for Wales.

  182. Road cycling

    Men's road race

"We saw Peter Kennaugh having a conversation with Mark Cavendish in the car and he was probably saying he is completely spent and asking whether he should drop back in and help somebody else in the team.

"Kennaugh dug as deep as he could but Scott Thwaites, Geraint Thomas and Jack Bauer now lead and with 50km left to race I would expect them to contest the medals.

"Thomas looks right at home in these conditions. I remember stage five of the Tour de France - this is what he looked like guiding Richie Porte across the cobblestones of Northern France."

  183. Squash

  184. Road cycling

    Men's road race

The dream appears to be over for Peter Kennaugh. The Manxman had led since the start of the men's race, but has been finally overtaken after more than 120km. You can watch that right here right now.

  187. Men's road race

    Chris Boardman

Olympic cycling champion and BBC Sport summariser

"There are a lot of riders starting to suffer now. It doesn't look good for David Millar, maybe the race is just a little bit too physical for him today.

"All of the people that are lining the route in the rain here appreciate the fact that this racing is making for a superb spectacle and whoever takes the gold will be a worthy winner."

  188. Road Cycling

    Men's road race

Nathan Haas's attempt to cross the gap is short lived. The Australian falls back into the pack.

Up ahead Peter Kannaugh has chalked off his eighth lap with the clock showing 2:48:10, but the chase is on.

New Zealand's Shane Archbold has cranked up the pace and leads the peloton across the line just 1:15 behind.

The hotter pace has whittled down the pack to 15 riders.

  190. Road Cycling

    Men's road race

Mark Cavendish is doing everything short of getting out of the car and onto the bike for his Isle of Man main man Peter Kennaugh. He has to make do with handing him a gel and a bottle and telling him to only take one of each to save on weight.

His lead is stubbornly sticking out at 1:50. Six kilometres remaining.

  191. Squash

Willstrop and Selby (England) squash - men's doubles

    Aimee Lewis

    BBC Sport in Glasgow

Daryl Selby and James Willstrop of England

"A wild roar from Daryl Selby, England fans are on their feet and then the lights come on. A lot of squinting until the eyes readjust after watching two sets in near darkness."

  192. Badminton

Khe Wei Woon & Vivian Kah Mun Hoo (Malaysia) - women's doubles

Khe Wei Woon and Vivian Kah Mun Hoo of Malaysia save a total of five game points in the second to beat defending champions Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa of India and win the gold with a 21-17 23-21 victory in 41 minutes.

  193. Men's road race

    Chris Boardman

Olympic cycling champion and BBC Sport summariser

"It's an intelligent tactical move from Australia to push Nathan Haas off the front - it obliges the rest of the field to chase down the two riders going for medals down the road. Are they going to take the bait and start to do some work now?"

  194. Road Cycling

    Men's road race

The rhythm of the race has changed for the first time in a long time.

Australian Nathan Haas scoots off the front of the peloton, changing the balance of power among those he leaves behind.

The onus is no longer on his team-mates to make the pace, as they have been for most of the race. Instead New Zealand come to the fore.

Haas has only eaten 17 seconds into Kennaugh as it stands.

  195. Netball

    Reaction - Australia win gold

    Saj Chowdhury

    BBC Sport in Glasgow

"Has Australia's perspective changed on win or bust in sport? They were criticised for not winning enough gold medals at London 2012 and are set to finish a distant second behind England in the medal table. This is what the 'smiling assassin' goal shooter of the victorious netball team, Caitlin Bassett, had to say on the matter.

    Caitlin Bassett of Australia

'There's no pressure on us to return to the top of the Commonwealth table,' said the 6ft 3in player.

'You can throw around gold medals and world titles, but at the end of the day it's just about putting on a good performance. Winning comes in there in terms of funding, but it's not our only focus.'"

  196. Bronze Medal

Willstrop and Selby (England) squash - men's doubles

After another tightly-contested game it is England's James Willstrop and Daryl Selby who win men's doubles bronze after beating Scotland's Alan Clyne and Harry Leitch 11-8 11-7.

It is Selby's first Commonwealth Games medal, although Willstrop won silver in the men's singles.

  197. Road Cycling

    Men's road race

98km done, seven out of 12 laps in the bag. That is the good news for Peter Kennaugh.

The bad news is that there are still another 70km and five laps to go.

The leader's advantage is still as good as stationary at 1:49.

  198. Road Cycling

    Men's road race

    Victoria Pendleton

BBC Sport cycling expert, on Radio 5 live

"On the whole, Pete is doing a solo time trial and that is not necessarily an event he is known for. He is just absolutely heart and soul out there on the roads in Glasgow. I would love for this to work out.

"It would be one of the greatest cycling Commonwealth Games stories of all time. What he is doing only a small amount of cyclists would be able to do. His concentration around every corner, every pothole will have to be impeccable because these conditions are treacherous."

  199. Medal Table

    medal table

Worry not England fans, your place at the top of the medal table was already assured before the start of today.

Even if the Aussies had won all the golds they were in for on the final day it was too little too late to move to the top of the shop.

  201. Road Cycling

    Men's road race

Peter Kennaugh's lead is being calculated at 1:49 with 75km left.

There are only about 25 riders in the peloton. Each one of each one of them is soaked to the bone. The rain has gone beyond torrential.

The team cars all have the headlights on as they pick their way through the gloom and puddles behind the riders.

Mark Cavendish, in the Isle of Man vehicle, is in the ear of leader Peter Kennaugh telling him that he can do it and handing him some energy gels to feed the muscles as well as the mind.

  203. Badminton

    Men's road race

    Peter Kennaugh

Peter Kennaugh completes his sixth lap - marking off the halfway stage - in 2:05:06.

And the gap to Michael Hepburn of Australia on the front of the peloton is up at 1:55.

The conditions are getting biblical out there. As well as sheeting rain, there is a fair wind whipping around the course, coming at the riders from all different directions as they make their way round the twists and turns.

    Just over 80km to go.

  205. Australia win gold

    Player reaction

Australia netball player Laura Geitz, speaking to BBC Sport: "It's been 12 long years since we won the gold. It sounds cliched but we stuck to the game-plan and came out with a great win. We are very happy with that."

  206. Australia win gold

    Pamela Cookey

Injured England netball captain and BBC Sport expert

    The Australian team celebrate

"Fair play to Australia, they came out very strong, they were clinical and made very few errors. Any time New Zealand threw the ball away Australia were there to capitalise on it and Caitlin Thwaites never looked like missing a shot, she was my woman of the match today."

  207. Road Cycling

    Men's road race

Leader Peter Kennaugh is wincing and gasping a little as he climbs the inclines. And well he might after so long on his own at the front.

His lead contracts for first time in a long time, nipping back a second to 1:50.

A shade under 90km to go and Kennaugh's team-mates Elliot Baxter and Andrew Roche have folded out of the race. They can probably do more good cheering on from the finish straight than they can riding back in pack.

  208. Netball

    Australia win gold

    Saj Chowdhury

    BBC Sport in Glasgow

"Like all great Aussie sports teams of the past, this netball unit know how to turn the screw when on top. The third quarter was when the crucial damage was done as they outscored the 2010 Delhi champions 15-8.

"Australia's goal shooter Caitlin Bassett was near infallible again - scoring 49 of the points, with a 92% success rate. As for the Kiwis, maybe they were still feeling the effects of winning that last-goal decider against England. It will be short odds that these two meet again on the Gold Coast in four years."

Josh Day: Brave ride, this is one day racing - tactics are different to stage racing. A wet, technical course - plays into his hands.

Helena Carr: Think Peter Kennaugh is channelling his inner Jens Voigt with this race!

German Voigt, 42, competed in the Tour de France for an 17th consecutive year this season, and has a reputation as being something of a hard man.

Totum: The Aussies said it would be a bunch sprint as they would ensure it would be. Arrogance? Go Peter Kennaugh (or David Millar) (or Geraint Thomas).

Isle of Man cyclist Mark Cavendish, speaking about his recovery from injury to BBC Sport: "I've been on the road bike training hard this last week but I still don't know my programme yet. We will see in the next few weeks how strong I am. I was on super form for the Tour de France and I've always done that so I don't know what my form will be like without it. I've got good movement in my shoulder, it's not fully recovered but I am super happy with it."

    Mark Cavendish

On a potential return to track cycling: "I don't ride for Team Sky so I can't just go backwards and forwards between the road and the track - that was part and parcel of being with the Sky team. Ultimately I'd like to return but I'm a professional bike rider. I love my team and they and the road have to come first."

"The other home nations are still strong and have young riders suited to this course, but I know that the team is strong and it's not just Peter Kennaugh. In Delhi in 2010 we controlled the race, ultimately the Australians won but if we ride well today we can get a result."

We saw that really smart move from Emma Pooley in the women's race when she attacked over the top of a climb, and that might be a move for Millar. He can't match the other riders for power but he can match them for brains.

"I'd love to see Geraint Thomas do something here, he is a courageous rider, but Peter Kennaugh is the favourite, he will the man to beat."

    Men's road race

The men's road race will consist of 12 laps of the 14km city centre loop that that the women competed over this morning - all adding up to a total distance of 168.24km.

The romantics will want a David Millar victory. The realists might point to his distant eighth-place finish in the time trial to suggest he doesn't have the legs for such feats.

The Welsh pair of Geraint Thomas and Luke Rowe are a punchy duo while Pete Kennaugh of the Isle of Man is British champion and the winner of the Tour of Austria.

"Scotland's Katie Archibald has done a fantastic ride so far but she is surviving on pure courage. She now has got a measure of what it's like to race with the best in the world.

Who is favourite out of all that lot? Well, the combination of Armitstead and Pooley is a strong one, but how much energy will the pace-making job have taken out of Pooley's legs?

England and New Zealand will meet for the second time in five days, with both sides looking to recover quickly from semi-final disappointment on Saturday. New Zealand edged the group match between the sides on Tuesday, setting them up for the seemingly kinder semi-final, but the Kiwis will be bruised after letting a two-goal lead slip against India.

Steve Edward of New Zealand is pressured by Barry Middleton of England

England were always up against it facing Australia, and although they pushed hard in the second half, the world champions ran out comfortable winners. She told BBC Sport: "It was just a bit of fun initially and I had no plan to be a bike racer. When I did my first international race in Brittany in 2005, I sent an email at the time to a friend saying how much I was hating it and was grateful I wasn't a professional!"

Not bad for someone who forged a successful career, winning many top class women's races, world time trial title and Olympic and Commonwealth silver medals!

  340. Women's road race

    Chris Boardman

Olympic cycling champion and BBC Sport summariser

"Emma Pooley has split the field and established a significant gap already. The England riders who remain in the rear are not going to help chase them down, because the team's two strongest riders in Pooley and Lizzie Armitstead are up there with the leading group of seven.

"Scotland's Katie Archibald is driving across, and gives Australian Gracie Elvin a free ride, but the gap over the rest of the field is growing massively."

This might be England's move. Emma Pooley streaks away from the front of the peloton and fellow England rider Lizzie Armitstead is towing on her rear wheel.

They are joined by Ashleigh Pasio of South Africa, Tiffany Cromwell and Gracie Elvin of Australia, Linda Villmusen of New Zealand and Katie Archibald of Scotland.

It is a strong group, strong enough to stay clear, and after a few nervous glances over their shoulder the non-English riders in the break are co-operating.

The Australians are still taking it to the rest of the field. Shara Gillow has gone and gone hard at the front. It is still England who are policing the upstarts and Laura Trott heads off after her.

The pair of them are 11 seconds up the road. New Zealand get on the front of the main bunch to try and reduce the arrears.

Hayley Jones of Wales is one three retirements from the race so far.

"England are just trying to share the workload and keep everybody in the bunch. They will chase anything that goes down and stop them getting too far ahead of the main peloton. Australia have got a couple of pure sprinters, Chloe Hosking is a really great sprinter so they should be watching out for her."

Australia are determined to animate this race. The green and gold riders take it in turns to surge off the front, trying to throw the best-laid plans of their rivals off track.

There is not a lot of appetite from any of the other teams to assist them in making a break stick.

England's Laura Trott helps bring the Aussies back to the rest. The Aussies have a quick pow-wow among themselves. Are they going to revise this aggressive approach?

"An interesting move from Australia's Melissa Hoskins. She seems absolutely determined to force a breakaway but she has played her card very early.

"Hannah Barnes of England is matching her, but Barnes' instructions would have been to ride for Lizzie Armitstead. Maybe England will change those tactics as the race goes on. I don't think that will be the last we see of Hoskins."

  355. Road Cycling

Hannah Barnes' heart is not in this breakaway at all. She is merely marking time alongside Melissa Hoskins, keeping alongside the Australian and trying to convince her that it would be foolish to go solo with more than 75km to ride.

  356. Road Cycling

    Women's road race

Australia have a little probe off the front, testing the enthusiasm of the rest of the leaders for a chase. Katrin Garfoot has a pop and then team-mate Melissa Hoskings kicks hard enough to open up a gap.

England's Hannah Barnes takes responsibility for going after her, making it back up to her wheel.

Hoskings is pushing hard around the twists and turns, using up every inch of tarmac, and Barnes almost comes to grief, wobbling as she takes a similarly tight line.

"They are all trying to control the race, pick up speed slightly and judge what they have to do for the rest of the race. There are a lot of sharp corners and more technical riders are going to be at an advantage."

    Chris Boardman

Olympic cycling champion and BBC Sport summariser

"A lot of the favourites to win this have been riding at the front of what is quite a small peloton now - they know this is the kind of race where it is worth expending that extra bit of energy to remain in a good position.

"The lead group of about 40 is just backing off a little bit now because they have removed a lot of riders already. There is a big variety in terms of ability in this race and that can make the better riders nervous because they want to avoid crashes and stay in groups of riders they trust."

    usain Bolt

He may only have clocked up around 20 seconds of relay anchoring on the track during the Games, but it is never just about the running with Usain Bolt.

The Jamaican did the business on the track last night, bringing home gold for his nation in a surprisingly close, until he got the baton at least, 4x100m relay final.

Either side of that run it was about the rest of what he does. Tartan bunnet, high-fives, soft-shoe shuffles, selfies, hugs, kisses - a one-man PR offensive that charmed the life out of Hampden Park.

You can enjoy his antics right here.

Four-time Olympic champion Michael Johnson: "400 runner Amantle Montsho positive for banned substance at Commonwealth Games. Is it fair if people associate all of her career with drugs? Majority of you say it's fair. I agree. If athletes know all of their accomplishments will be tainted it may serve as another deterrent."

It is not quite San Francisco, but there are plenty of short, sharp climbs to get the quads burning in this Glasgow course.

England are prominent on the front of the peloton with New Zealand putting in a decent shift as well.

The pace is stringing out the field around the city streets. The lead group is down to 20-25 riders from the 63-strong starting field. Isle of Man's Laura Wasley is the latest to head out the backdoor.

You can watch the race on the live coverage tab at the top of this page.

"Already we have got more than a dozen riders in trouble here. The short sharp climbs are proving very difficult and you can see how steep they are - some of them are getting on for a 20% gradient."

Laura Wasley 30, and Anna Christian, 18, are competing for Isle of Man this morning. Cavendish, 29, injured his shoulder on the opening day of the Tour de France in Yorkshire and is unable to race in the men's event later today.

The tight twists and turns of the course are already in evidence as the leaders head along Buchanan Street past the discount clothes emporium and highstreet chemist. It is going to be a test of bike-handling as much as stamina.

There are plenty of riders already being left behind by the leaders with Kenya's Joyce Mwangi, who was whizzing round in a ridiculously low gear for the first few hundred metres, already off the back and with little hope of getting back on. And she is soon joined by a pair of Swaziland riders.

"Lizzie Armitstead is bound to be the one, Emma Pooley is going to be there to try and stop any breaks. They'll be making sure the race stays together and turns out the way Lizzie wants. I don't think anyone will go for a long solo attack, they will try and keep it together as a team, but who knows?"

  367. Women's road race

    Chris Boardman

Olympic cycling champion and BBC Sport summariser

"England's Lizzie Armitstead is the hot favourite and that means she will be really heavily marked, but there are lots of little ramps on the course and that might help her out a bit.

"Tiffany Cromwell is the one Australia are touting as their leader, at least nominally - they have got a lot of strong and clever riders. Likewise New Zealand's Linda Villumsen, who won the time trial, would be very difficult to catch.

"Scotland's Katie Archibald fought hard in the time trial on home soil, she is clearly on form and both she and Elinor Barker of Wales have an opportunity to show what they can do. We might find all the favourites concentrate on marking each other, allowing lesser fancied riders to slip away."

  368. Road Cycling

    Women's road race

The riders are massed on the startline and on the front row England's Dani King is doing a bit of diplomacy, chatting happily with a New Zealand rider.

England will be well marked by the rest and might need a few allies among the rest of the peloton if their plans are to come to fruition.

"You can have up to six riders per nation so definitely teams will have a lead rider. It's going to be a great race and right now it's just about dry. As the course is quite technical, dry would be great, but these guys can deal with anything."

English rider Lizzie Armitstead: "I've got so many silvers and I want to say that I'm actually a champion of something, rather than the silver medallist. It's just pressure from me. I don't really care whether I'm impressing the newspapers or not. It's more about myself."

""It's more of a classics-style race, short, punchy climbs. It's about repeated efforts with minimal recovery in between. It's pretty technical and I like to think I'm pretty handy on my bike.

"It's definitely an advantage to have raced it previously. I have the confidence to know that where I attacked on that course I can go to the line solo. I think I'll try to do something similar."

Lizzie Armitstead will be at the centre of England's plans in the opening event of the closing day - the women's road race.

Backed by a supporting cast that includes time trial silver medallist Emma Pooley and points race champion Laura Trott, the 25-year-old is one of the favourites for gold.

The action gets under way at 08:00 BST as the field head out from Glasgow Green for 98.14 km of bluff, jostle and chase.

    Lizzie Armitstead wins silver

It seems strange to remember now, but the opening days of London 2012 were dogged by doubts that Team GB would deliver the medals that their home support craved.

After Great Britain's all-star men's squad, containing the recently-crowned Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish, had been thwarted by the rest of the field in the men's road race, it was left to the women to open the floodgates.

Lizzie Armitsteadsprinted along the Mall, through the pouring rain and to a silver medal - the first of 65 won by Great Britain.

Commonwealth Games Glasgow chief executive David Grevemberg, speaking to BBC Breakfast: "It's been a fantastic journey. I'd like to thank everyone involved. From the 15,000 Clydesiders who made this games come to life, to the organising committee that has delivered day after day, and of course the athletes, they have brought the house down.

    Scotland fan

"We wanted to create a Games that would resonate and refresh the conversation throughout the Commonwealth, centered on the athletes of all 71 nations. We wanted to create a fantastic experience for the fans, and we have seen that in venue after venue.

"There would always be a natural comparison between us and every other Games, but what we tried to stay true to is a Games here in Glasgow. There are so many tangible and social examples of legacy - that often used word. There is no question that the connections we have built will continue to be prosperous."
