Hawkcraig at Aberdour in Fife was the location of the hydrophonetraining station, HMS Tarlair. Men at the statuion were taught to use hydrophones to detect the noise of a new menance - enemy submarines.

There both land and ship-based hydrophones and the training the men received was exported across the globe. During WW1, the Firth of Forth, one of the key Scottish Naval Bases, became a great training pen for hydrophone use.
