Cancer centre planned for Milton Keynes Hospital

A dedicated £24m cancer centre could be built at Milton Keynes Hospital.

The unit, which is in the early planning stages, would include a radiotherapy bunker where treatment could be carried out.

Joe Harrison, the hospital's chief executive, said it was a "fantastic opportunity" for patients who have to travel out of the town for treatment.

He said travelling can add "further stress" at a time when patients are undergoing "gruelling treatment".

The plan was welcomed by Martin Ledwick, head information nurse at Cancer Research UK.

"Treatment like radiotherapy has to be given on a daily basis for several weeks," Mr Ledwick said.

"The treatment also has side effects like tiredness. If you are closer to home that has to be a good thing."

The cancer centre is one of a number of projects planned for Milton Keynes Hospital.

A redevelopment of the accident and emergency department has also been discussed, while investment has been made in a new medical school.
