Neanderthals and humans 'co-existed' longer than thought

The history of human evolution has been completely rewritten with the discovery that modern human beings and Neanderthals coexisted in Europe for much longer than previously thought.

Neanderthals were thought to have died out around 500 years after modern humans first arrived.

However, it turns out that the two species lived alongside each other in Europe for up to 5,000 years, and even interbred.
