Rana Mitter, director of Oxford University's China Centre, said the Chinese were "very pragmatic" and would not be "entirely surprised" at the monarch's reaction to the "vigorous" security arrangements surrounding Xi Jinping's visit.

Quote Message: There is a perception that the UK is an important enough trading and political partner that this sort of incident isn't going to get in the way. I suspect that Chinese officials are far more concerned about the prospect of Britain leaving the European Union than they are about the overheard comments of high-level figures. from Rana Mitter Director of Oxford University's China Centre

A private dive team, which found a body near where Ellis vanished two days later, criticised police for initially stopping them from searching the water.

Peter Faulding, from Specialist Group International - which found the body after answering a Facebook appeal from Ellis's family - branded the police's obstruction of his team "disgusting".

Quote Message: I can confirm that Thames Valley Police have referred themselves to the IPCC with respect to the handling of the recovery of Ellis. We are aware of the family and community concerns around our actions following this tragic incident and the referral was made this morning.
