Mrs Mugabe is to become head of the ruling party's women's league in December and on Friday her husband presented her with a PhD from the University of Zimbabwe. She carried out a case study on children's homes for her thesis on the changing social structure and functions of the family.

On Wednesday, a woman sells plantain chips in Lagos in the Ikotun-Egbe neighbourhood where popular televangelist TB Joshua has his church. A hostel belonging to his ministry collapsed on Friday, killing at least 80 people.

The next day a mourner reads an order of service for renowned anti-apartheid journalist Nat Nakasa at Durban's City Hall. His remains were returned to South Africa from the US last month. He was awarded a fellowship to study journalism at Harvard University in 1964 and took his own life a year later.
