Inspired by the lyric from Nothing Compares 2 U, a US radio station is calling for the track to be played nationwide, exactly seven hours and 13 days after Prince's death.

The song will be broadcast today at 5.07pm central time (11.07pm BST).

The tribute is organised by The Current in Minnesota, Prince's home state.

"We thought marking this moment...with one of Prince's most ubiquitous songs would be a wonderful way to honour his legacy," says host Jim McGuinn.

"We hope that wherever Prince fans are, and whatever radio station they are listening to, they will take a minute to listen and remember his musical genius and artistry."

KEXP (Seattle), WXPN (Philadelphia), WFUV (New York), KKXT (Dallas), KUTX (Austin), and Radio Milwaukee are joining in with the simulcast.

"Other radio stations of any format are encouraged to blanket the airwaves with the song," a post on The Current's website reads.

Organisers will also be collection tributes made on social media tagged with #NothingCompares2U.

Most famously performed by the singer Sinead O'Connor, the song was written by Prince in the 1980s but did not receive much attention when it was first released in 1985.

The version sung by O'Connor in 1990 became a worldwide hit.

In her version, she changed the number of days in the opening line to 15, not 13.

Prince died at his in Minnesota, near Minneapolis, at the age of 57 on 21 April.

Investigators are still determining how the singer, songwriter and producer died.
