BreakingBoxing Day floods: Leaking service tunnel blamed for Foss Barrier failure
Nathan Turvey
BBC Radio York News
A long-awaited Environment Agency report into how water got into the Foss Barrier Pumping Station in York on Boxing Day 2015 has found most of the water entered the building because of a leaking service tunnel drainage system.
The Environment Agency report says all eight pumps at the Foss Barrier were working that day at full capacity.
However, a build-up of water in the barrier's underground service tunnel, combined with water flowing through the drainage system, filled the tunnel until water emerged inside the pumping station building.

A £17m upgrade is now under way which it's said will address all the recommendations made in the report, and this includes fixing water leaks in the service tunnel and new pumps with an increased capacity which will be installed by winter.
