  10. Lyveden New Bield key: The gunpowder plotter

    Martin Borley

    BBC Northampton

Experts believe they've found the front door key to Elizabethan summer house Lyveden New Bield. The house was built by Sir Thomas Tresham, whose son Francis found infamy as one of the gunpowder plotters.

    The gunpowder plotters

Sir Thomas had been brutally persecuted - and imprisoned - for his Catholic faith, and Francis was keen for revenge. Known as something of a loose cannon, in 1591 Francis had served some time in prison after trying to stitch up a tenant who owed him money by forging an arrest warrant.

In October 1605 he joined the other conspirators - including his cousin, plot ringleader Robert Catesby - as they planned to assassinate King James I.
