Oxford has been named and shamed by the World Health Organistion for the poor quality of its air.

    Air pollution in Oxford

Dr Penny Woods, chief executive of the British Lung Foundation, says urgent action must be taken to prevent premature deaths.

Quote Message: It is deeply concerning that UK towns and cities are failing to meet WHO standards for the smallest, most harmful pollution particles. These particles are able to reach deep into our lungs and even into our bloodstream, and can have a serious impact on our breathing and wider health. It is clear from this report that the UK is facing an air pollution crisis. from Dr Penny Woods Chief executive of the British Lung Foundation

  14. Oxford named and shamed over air pollution levels

Oxford is one of 11 towns and cities across Britain and Ireland that have been named and shamed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for breaching air pollution safety levels.

    Car exhaust

WHO data shows the city is breaking the safe level for a type of pollution known as particulate matter, caused mainly by vehicle emissions, which is wreaking havoc on human health.

It says this kind of pollution increases the risk of stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, and chronic and acute respiratory diseases, including asthma, for people who live in these areas.

Quote Message: When dirty air blankets our cities, the most vulnerable urban populations - the youngest, oldest and poorest - are the most impacted. from Dr Flavia Bustreo WHO assistant director general for family, women and children's health

But a proposal from the county council for a zero-emission zone in the centre was branded "ridiculous" by the city's authority.
