  5. Three-year-old passenger in 140mph car chase 'not wearing seatbelt'

It's "absolutely unbelievable" that a three-year-old girl who was passenger in a car involved in a 140mph chase across North Yorkshire didn't have a seat belt on and wasn't in a child's booster seat, North Yorkshire Police have said.

    Police stop car

The girl was discovered when the police pursuit ended in Boston Spa yesterday afternoon, following a chase which went northbound on the A1 from Catterick to Scotch Corner before heading into West Yorkshire.

A large quantity of cannabis was found and a man and woman, both from Rotherham, were arrested. The girl's currently in police care and officers are liaising with Social Services.

Sgt Paul Cording, from North Yorkshire Police, says: "There was no car seat, no restraint. It's absolutely unbelievable somebody would put their own family at risk."

  8. Sheep dies after second North Yorkshire animal shooting in less than a week

A sheep has had to be put down after being shot and seriously injured in Ryedale - the second animal shooting in North Yorkshire in a week.

Police are appealing for witnesses after offenders shot the sheep with a high-power rifle on land off Malton Road at Marton, near Sinnington.

The shooting happened between 10:00 on Monday and 17:00 on Tuesday when offenders entered land off Malton Road at Marton, near Sinnington.

They also caused "extensive" damage to hedges, crops and a gate, police say.

It comes just days after a cow was shot in the eye and killed near York.

Quote Message: The offenders left the sheep suffering in great distress, before the owners found it in the field several hours later. Sadly, its injuries were so severe it had to be euthanised." from Spokesperson North Yorkshire Police

    End of car chase

The chase, involving a grey Audi A4, started at about 16:25 on the A1 northbound near Catterick and continued to Scotch Corner before heading south, again on the A1, before the car was finally stopped near Boston Spa.

A "large quantity" of cannabis was found and two people, a 31-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman, both from Rotherham, were arrested at the scene and remain in custody.

"A number of motorists will have witnessed the suspect vehicle's manner of driving and officers are appealing to them to come forward including any that were hit by the vehicle," police say.

  11. A chorus of approval: Birds wake up in full voice at York's Askham Bog

    Joanita Musisi

    Reporter, BBC Radio York

At this time of year there's nothing more glorious than a dawn chorus - and the birds really are in full voice at the moment.

So I got up - before the birds - and visited York's Askham Bog nature reserve, to experience the growing crescendo of bird song, which signals the start of the day.

The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust looks after Askham Bog and they sent Jono Leadley to assist me.

  13. Listen: Knaresborough pair spend 'price of cruise' following FA Cup trail to Wembley

    Georgey Spanswick

    Presenter, BBC Radio York

A remarkable 10-month challenge comes to a head this weekend when Knaresborough couple Malcolm and Lorna Foyle head to Wembley for the FA Cup Final.

They've spent the best part of a year - and more than £1,200 - zig-zagging their way round the country on the trail of the cup, from its earliest rounds and starting with a match involving Harrogate Railway.

They've been telling me the story of their long slog, starting with the team they've encountered the most on the long road to Wembley:

  14. Car containing three-year-old 'weaved in and out of traffic' during 140mph North Yorkshire pursuit

A car involved in a 140mph police pursuit with a three-year-old child on board "weaved in and out of traffic and onto the hard shoulder" as it sped across North Yorkshire, police say.

The chase, which started at about 16:25 yesterday on the A1 northbound near Catterick, involved a grey Audi A4 which failed to stop.

The car was driven to Scotch Corner before leaving the motorway and then heading south on the A1 again. It was eventually stopped by police on the exit slip road near Boston Spa.

A three-year-old child and a large quantity of cannabis were found in the vehicle. No-one was injured during the pursuit, police say.

Two of the car's occupants, a man, 31, and a woman, 22, both from Rotherham, were arrested at the scene and remain in custody.

  15. NHS response to Scarborough Alzheimer's 'crisis' family

    Elly Fiorentini

    BBC Radio York News

Earlier we told you about David, from Scarborough, who has been pleading with the NHS to help him and his family cope with his mum Greta's severe Alzheimer's.

    David from Scarborough

Last September, social workers and doctors agreed they were a family "in crisis" and needed additional NHS-funded help.

Despite having a full assessment and approval for support, David says there's been no further progress.

After BBC Radio York highlighted David's case, Scarborough and Ryedale Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), responsible for funding the care, has admitted it's "taken longer than it should".

Quote Message: Part of the delay has been down to a change of NHS providers, which we recognise is no consolation to the family. However, that transition is now complete. I’ve spoken to colleagues directly involved with this lady’s care and they’ll be giving the family a call today to talk through their case and explain the next steps fully." from Simon Cox Chief Officer, Scarborough and Ryedale CCG

  17. Witness appeal after Catterick biker seriously hurt in collision

The driver of a car who may have "vital" information about a collision in North Yorkshire earlier this month which left a motorbike rider with serious injuries is being urged to come forward.

The incident happened at about 13:20 on Saturday 7 May as the rider, a woman in her 30s, from Catterick Garrison, was travelling along Reeth Road from Richmond when she collided with a white Volvo C60 near River Meadow Cottage.

Police believe the Audi driver, who wasn't  involved in the collision, may have information which could help them piece together events in the moments leading up to the incident.

The biker, who was taken to hospital in Darlington, has now been released and she's recovering at home.
