Shohidur Rahman: Manuel Pellegrini set Man City up against Bayern midweek to get a point and spent most of the match defending. Bit hypocritical.

Freddie Drapkin: It's Arsenal's weekend. Both Danny Welbeck and Mesut Ozil scored, and their top six rivals gained just two points from a possible 18.

Lisa: Manuel Pellegrini's comments smack of Brendan Rodgers' bitterness at Anfield at the end of last season v Chelsea. At the end of the day you have to be good enough to beat the opposition no matter how they set up. Sour grapes me thinks.

Tom, Manchester: Pellegrini coming out of his shell in recent interviews, very nice to see. Shows his passion a bit more!

  8. Player reaction

    Man City 1-1 Chelsea

    Frank Lampard

Manchester City midfielder Frank Lampard: "It was a great game of football. I arrived on one and bounced into the net and it was strange. The reception I got when I came on was amazing, I can't speak highly enough of the fans. I came here to do a job and it is a special and weird day.

"I know the 13 years I spent at Chelsea and thee were no bad feelings so I hoped for a good reception. It was difficult day for me at the end because what do you do? You're caught in the middle.

"It was a strange week, I knew I wouldn't start and didn't know what to expect. What was a win for me today? Maybe a draw and keeping the Premier League close and a reception from both sets of fans that I won't forget."

  9. Don't ask me about him...

    Man City 1-1 Chelsea

Jose Mourinho is asked about Manuel Pellegrini's description of Chelsea as a small team and he interjects with 'many times he says he doesn't speak about me or my team but he continues to do so. Don't ask me about these words.'

    Man City 1-1 Chelsea

Manuel Pellegrini continues to call Chelsea 'a small team' throughout his press conference. Pin out of grenade...

  14. Manager reaction

    Man City 1-1 Chelsea

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini, speaking to BBC Sport: "It is not a result that I want, not what we deserved but the game was very similar to the game against Stoke. Ten players defended their own half, they scored a counter attack and they continued to defend until the end. The result is not what both teams did during 90 minutes.

"I am happy because our team played in one way, we continued playing with 11 players, trying to score, and with one player less trying not to have another counter attack and concede a goal. I am very happy with the mentality of our team.

"It is so important to play like a big team, and not like a small team. I would not be happy to play that way. We continue with the same ambition, teams will find it hard to beat us. The team performance was very good.

"I was sure that if Frank Lampard plays he will score, things like that happen in football. He will be a very important player for us. From the beginning he has been involved 100% in every day, I think that maybe he was not happy to score against such an important team for him. But he is very professional."

  15. Manager reaction

    Everton 2-3 Crystal Palace

    Neil Warnock

Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock: "We've done ever so well. We should have won the games we've drawn as well.

"Everton are a good side but we've shown great character. You are going to get nervy moments when you play against the quality that they have but I don't think Julian Speroni had too much to do.

"They have listened and I am very proud of them. A win gives everyone a lift and bit of confidence. There are not many more difficult places than Everton to go. But we deserved it."

  16. Manager reaction

    Man City 1-1 Chelsea

    Frank lampard & Jose MOurinho

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, speaking to BBC Sport about Frank Lampard's goal against his former club: "I don't feel it that way [that it was emotional]. I feel that when a player leaves another club and plays for a direct opponent, he is not going there for a holiday he is going there to try and beat his club - the one everyone considers the club of his heart, but not any more. Maybe again when he leaves City, but while at City he wants to beat Chelsea. That is the nature of football.

"I am happy with my team today. We made a mistake with their goal, when you play a top team you focus in every aspect of the game but when you mistake you can be punished and we were punished tonight."

  17. Post update

    Man City 1-1 Chelsea

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has said that playing Chelsea was like playing Stoke, two 'small teams' who are only interested in defending.

  18. Manager reaction

    Everton 2-3 Crystal Palace

    Roberto Martinez

    Everton manager Roberto Martinez:

"I thought we started very, very well. We scored the first and were looking to get a second. I couldn't see Palace getting into the game at all. The penalty changes the game - it gives them spirit to believe they can get something.

"We have to be very disappointed to concede three goals. We conceded three very, very sloppy goals. Those key moments cost us three points.

"Regarding Tim Howard's mistake [for the Fraizer Campbell goal], you win games as a team. You can always find a mistake - it was uncharacteristic of Tim not to make that cross.

    "It's one of those days."

  19. Manager reaction

    Man City 1-1 Chelsea

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, speaking to BBC Sport: "We were winning the game against 10 men, but the same 10 men had a fantastic reaction and gave everything to try to equalise.

"When the game gets emotional the numbers are not so important. When the game is tactical - yes they are important. We scored, we had the game seemingly under control, we hit the post but then they scored. At that point the game was emotional and in that period they were psychologically stronger than us and in the end a draw is maybe a fair result.

"The Premier League is not just different it is crazy. You have Chelsea 6-3 against Everton, Manchester United winning 3-1 and losing 5-3 to Leicester. The Premier League is becoming crazy. This was a big game. When the result was 0-0 I was thinking even 0-0 can be a big game."

  20. Post update

    Everton 2-3 Crystal Palace

After winning seven home games in a row between December and April, Everton have now won only one of six a run that started with a 3-2 reversal to Crystal Palace. The same scoreline today.

Tim Miller: Everton conceded 13 in five games, one clean sheet. Lucky not to concede a couple v Wolfsburg. Problems for Roberto Martinez to solve.

  22. Manager reaction

    Man City 1-1 Chelsea

    Jose Mourinho

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho on Sky Sports: "Frank Lampard is a Man City player, I don't believe in stories of passion and heart, maybe I am too pragmatic in football. When he decided to go to a direct competitor to Chelsea then love stories are over. He did his job as a professional.

"He got a good reception and this is England and this is Chelsea. Chelsea people never forget what Chelsea people do at the club. It happened to me when I was manager of Inter. It is Chelsea's culture and beauty."

    Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson

    BBC Radio 5 live

"Sometimes when a team gets down to 10 men the game gets so much worse but here it got so much better. Chelsea's goal was fantastic, the classic breakaway goal, with a great winding run from Andre Schurrle, the eventual scorer.

"For City's goal, James Milner got behind the Chelsea defence and produced a great pass to Frank Lampard, and so in the end it has become a really good story."

  30. Text us on 81111

Ian, Whitley Bay: Frank Lampard is a true footballing gent. A lovely gesture to the fans. His goal is a great story but ultimately his equaliser won't count for much - we're still five points clear of our biggest only rival and have sent a message to every other team that we can't be beaten.

  31. Post update

    Man City 1-1 Chelsea

After 13 years of service, 147 Premier League goals, the all-time goalscoring record, three Premier League wins, four FA Cups, a Champions League win and a Europa League win, I'm sure Chelsea fans will let Frank Lampard have two points in September.

  32. Post update

    Man City 1-1 Chelsea

    Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson

    BBC Radio 5 live

"It was a pretty awful game for a while, until the sending off put a bit more fuel on the fire. The darling of Chelsea supporters Frank Lampard scored the equaliser but this is a result that will please Chelsea far more than Man City. In all honesty I am surprised they conceded. There is an awful long way to go but anybody who wants to win the league has to finish above Chelsea for me.

"Lampard is applauding the Chelsea supporters and he has stated he never had a chance to say goodbye to the Chelsea fans. And they are the real fans aren't they, the away fans."

  33. Player reaction

    Man City 1-1 Chelsea

    Frank Lampard

Manchester City and former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard on Sky Sports: "It's a really difficult one. I'd be unprofessional if I came on and didn't do my job so I'm mixed with it.

"I'm obviously pleased that the side I came on for got a draw. It's come up, I'm a professional and I didn't expect to come on and score. I'm stuck in the middle.

"The Chelsea fans were singing my name and it was an emotional day. It's not how I expected to say goodbye to the Chelsea fans. I woke up this morning and didn't know what I wanted from today so I'm glad it's out of the way. I guess this a happy medium."

  34. Post update

"The tackle is a yellow card. Pablo Zabaleta cannot complain he has got two yellows. Diego Costa was peeved because Zabaleta made a great tackle on him just before, and then he whacked him again. Definite yellow. Will this make Chelsea more adventurous? I doubt it."

  70. GOAL

Everton 1-3 Crystal Palace - Yannick Bolasie (69 mins)

Game, set and the match? You'd think so. Leon Osman gifts the ball to Palace in midfield, Jason Puncheon plays a fine ball into the run of Yannick Bolasie on the edge of the box and he steers it into the far corner first time. Great finish!

  71. RED CARD

He's off! A flashpoint, and you know that Diego Costa is involved! Pablo Zabaleta fouls Diego Costa, who is not happy at all and grapples with the Argentine. Best chance of the day! Great move from City as Yaya Toure finds Pablo Zabaleta on the right, he play it back in to Sergio Aguero, who is able to find half a yard in the blue wall to steer in a low shot. Great pass! Spotter's badge for John Stones as he slides one through the eye of a Crystal Palace needle into the feet of Samuel Eto'o. "Chelsea will now just fast forward to six o'clock. City have been little bit brighter and with one or two more ideas, but I can only remember Thibaut Courtois making one save, from a corner. Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, speaking to Sky Sports: "How is it possible to give this game away? We have given the game away. Leicester has proven already in four games that they have a strong character and that when they are 3-1 down, you can play all the game with more possession but you cannot do these kind of things."

On Tyler Blackett's sending off and the Jonny Evans injury: "It is not pleasant when players are injured or sent off but we can manage. I don't think it is the weakness of our defence, it is the weakness of our defensive organisation from the team. That we have to do better. You have to know when you can pass the ball and when you have to get rid of the ball. In this game, at 3-1 I felt we had played fantastic football but then you cannot make the errors we did.

"We have to continue and improve. We created a lot of chances, we made fantastic goals so that is a plus but we lost the game and that is the most important thing."

  155. Manager reaction

    Leicester 5-3 Man Utd

    Louis van Gaal

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: "I think the spectators have seen a fantastic spectacle today and we started well and scored fantastic goals. In second half, we scored another goal but you have to win the game and we didn't do that. We didn't keep ball possession in the right way.

"We have too many players who want to seek for the goal. Leicester have already showed against Arsenal and Stoke that they can come back and they did it very well.

"For the first penalty it is always the referee [who you talk about] but you don't have to do that as a player. You know you are in the penalty area and you allow the referee to whistle if you make a challenge, I don't know if it is a penalty but we have to look at ourselves because we made such big errors as a team.

"I cannot say that I am happy. In the world of football, these matches happen. I was a coach at Barcelona in my first year and we were 3-0 ahead, with 15 minutes to play and we lost 3-4. It can happen, it is the world of football but it is not good because we have the game in our pocket and gave it away. Not because of Leicester, we gave it away and I don't like that.

"You cannot say the defence was weak. You play like a team, Leicester showed that, we did not play like a team in the second half and that is not only defence. In a defensive situation the whole team is responsible, not just one defender."

  156. Manager reaction

    Leicester 5-3 Man Utd

    Nigel Pearson

Leicester manager Nigel Pearson: "Back to back wins in the Premier League is never easy, especially for a promoted side. To back up the Stoke win against one of the big forces in English football is very satisfying. When you add to that coming from 3-1 down, it is a testament to the quality, belief and spirit amongst us. All in all we got things right tactically. We were always in the game because we matched them up.

"The most important thing is we continued in a positive vein. It is not a case of being positive and also being naïve. You need to find the right way to approach games. In the end we were full value for it.

"When you play against the diamond, the players who are going to have the most time are both full-backs. But we were able to exploit areas down the side of the back four on the transitions. We didn't do it well enough for long periods in the first half but were better in the second. The players have to take credit for how they went about putting into practice what we talked about and also their resilience. It is not just about technical ability.

"I haven't seen it (the first penalty) but I think when players commit to challenges in the box you have to be careful. We have an honest group of players and when you play at this level there are offences where you wonder if they are or aren't. That is the culture we have now. But our players work hard to put opponents under pressure and if we had a lucky break we earned it."

Martin, Milton Keynes: Had the pleasure of watching Man Utd get well beaten at StadiumMK and with their next five league games being a lot tougher than the first five it wouldn't surprise me if they were still in the bottom half at Christmas!

Tom, Stirling: Although the refereeing today was questionable, a patchy defence will always get exposed in the end. Man Utd look great going forward, but I think they will regret not strengthening at the back during the summer. All credit to Man Utd for entertainment purposes though!

  170. Player reaction

    Leicester 5-3 Man Utd

    Jamie Vardy

Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy: "It was absolutely brilliant. You can see what it means to the fans. We know we can play anyone, we exploited their weaknesses and we got the result. We know we have goals in us and we put our chances away.

"The first challenge was strength, shoulder to shoulder. I think he was mad the referee had not given a foul and then he came back and sent me down in the box.

Vardy, who four years ago was playing for FC Halifax, added: "It has not been as easy journey to be here but it is all about staying at the top. We move on to our next game."

  171. "Chelsea would take a point"

Man City v Chelsea (16:00 BST)

    Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson

    Football Focus

"Yaya Toure's been pilloried somewhat. He's one of those players who needs to play every week. He's so strong and so difficult to play against, and you don't need to rest him.

"He's not had a good start for the season. I was in Munich the other night when he played and Bayern's tactics were spot on and Toure got isolated against two Bayern midfielders.

"Chelsea have made a very, very good start to the season. You might argue that they haven't played too many of the top teams yet, but Chelsea would take a point. No doubt."

  172. Repeating mistakes from the past

Man City v Chelsea (16:00 BST)

    Manuel Pellegrini

The last time City won the title it was wonderful and joyous for them (obviously) but things didn't quite go according to plan the following season, when a failure to add quality to their squad meant they went backwards under Roberto Mancini. After a string of results that has seen then lose at home to Stoke, draw at Arsenal and lose in the Champions League to Bayern Munich, our pundit Robbie Savage feels they may be in danger of repeating their mistakes from the past.

"At the moment, it looks like a similar pattern is emerging to when they won the title under Roberto Mancini in 2012 and did not improve their squad at the start of the next season," says Savage.

"In fact, with the exit of Alvaro Negredo, this time they seem to have gone backwards in attack.

"What has not helped is that some of their stars of last season are not in form. Yaya Toure is not taking games by the scruff of the neck and Sergio Aguero does not look fully fit."

Jose Mourinho, speaking to Sky Sports: "What Diego Costa did in training yesterday was 100% so in his opinion and the medical professional opinion it is fatigue [not to be able to play more than one match a week].

"Manchester City have so many good players, so many options they have. It is normal they can make changes. In the matches where they played with only one striker, the results were not the best for them. It is normal they go back to two strikers because they were winning more like that.

"We have to look at not only Manchester City but to the other teams in the table. We have two points more than second place so we know we can go five points clear and that would be fantastic so early in the season."

  177. Post update

Man City v Chelsea (16:00 BST)

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini, speaking to Sky Sports: "I don't change the way we play depending on what the other team wants or prefers. It is very important for me as manager of a big club like Manchester City to try and go for the match from the beginning and win it.

"Eliaquim Mangala is not playing his first game ever - he has played three or four years at Porto, he won the title there, he has a lot of experience. He is 100% fit and it is the game for Mangala today."

Everton v Crystal Palace (16:00 BST)

Everton named a strong side for their Europa League win over Wolfsburg on Thursday but make five changes to their starting XI, including a first start for Samuel Eto'o in attack. Other players coming in to the line-up are midfielders Leon Osman and the on-loan Christian Atsu. Seamus Coleman is missing and so Sylvain Distin returns after a back injury to take his place in defence.

The big news for Palace is the dropping to the bench of Wilfried Zaha, who has failed to recover enough from a knock he picked up against Burnley to start. However, Joe Ledley is fit and comes into the starting XI. The other two changes to the away team sees Martin Kelly come in for Adrian Mariappa in defence and Yannick Bolasie start ahead of striker Dwight Gayle.

Everton XI: Howard, Baines, Jagielka, Distin, Stones, Barry, McCarthy, Osman, Atsu, Eto'o, Lukaku.

Crystal Palace XI: Speroni, Kelly, Dann, Delaney,Ward, Puncheon, McArthur, Jedinak,Ledley, Bolasie, Campbell.

Man City starting XI: Hart, Zabaleta, Kompany, Mangala, Kolarov, Milner, Fernandinho, Toure, Silva, Aguero, Dzeko.

It looks like Leeds have their new boss after a three-week wait, during which Neil Redfearn has done a pretty fine job as caretaker boss (including a 3-0 win over Huddersfield on Saturday). The new man in question is Darko Milanic. Who he? Well, he is a former Yugoslavia and Slovenia international, who won a load of trophies in his homeland as a manager with Maribor, but has spent the last 17 months in Austria with Sturm Graz.

"Perhaps Everton would be recovering from a Champions League tie had it not been for the south-east London side, who last season dealt a severe blow to their hopes of a top-four finish with a 3-2 win at Goodison Park. It was an impressive display under their then-manager Tony Pulis.

Richie de Laet is the guilty man, robbed of the ball by Radamel Falcao who sprints up the left wing and then picks out Van Persie with a cracking cross. Patience is not available when you are at the bottom of the league. I would expect Tottenham to win today."

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy: "When you bring a manager in that the fans aren't enthused by, after finishing the season terribly, anybody with any intelligence would suggest you should appoint somebody the fans like. He's done well in the Dutch market, and that's perhaps a market that's been underestimated in the Premier League in recent seasons. A lot of the credit also goes to the players. There's a new ideology from the top and they've gone again. Southampton need some reward for what they're doing."

Match of the Day commentator Guy Mowbray: "It's probably helped that they've got a new manager and new players. It's almost like a new club. Koeman looks the business. I don't think they'll stick around the top six, I think 10th is a very reasonable aspiration."

Steven Davies has shone, he's managed to keep Morgan Schneiderlin on board, and they've still got a good nucleus of players who know what the club is about. They've moved forward (since the summer) and not dwelt on it. You haven't seen protests from the fans, they've gone on with it. Discussing the mess at Newcastle

    MOTD2 Extra

Newcastle battled back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Hull at home on Saturday - but what about the future of under-pressure manager Alan Pardew?

Match of the Day commentator Guy Mowbray: "There needs to be some clarity right from top. We need to hear from the owner Mike Ashley, what his plans and thoughts are - and we just don't know because he does not do any speaking, for good or for bad. I stated in January that Alan Pardew was my manager of the year at that stage. In the first half of last season they were superb but then they fell away dramatically. And as soon as they lose a couple of games it will be back to square one and some will not rest until he is gone."

Football writer Amy Lawrence: "It is a rollercoaster at Newcastle - the word was designed for what goes on at St James' Park. Pardew is getting the blame but some people say he is a stooge for what going on behind the scenes and whether the fans want him to go it is about a bigger picture, there is more happening at the club."

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy: "I think Pardew has been a tad unlucky - he had a brilliant spell last season where they went a large number of games unbeaten, he lost his best player in a move that was out of his hands and by all accounts he is not in charge of transfers. It is not just him to blame, other people as well are behind the predicament there. At least there was a fight yesterday and Pardew made the substitution that changed the game. Pardew is hanging on for dear life but I like someone who has got fight. He is the manager and he is taking the blame and he has to stand up for himself. I think it is just a matter of time. It is a mess."

He had a family tragedy and there was the summer with Ivory Coast at the World Cup. The stick is fair because he's not performed as well as he can. When he is on form, for any of the top three or four teams he's the difference between winning title and not. Regarding the City v Chelsea match, I fancy the London side because of the way they have started."

Football writer Amy Lawrence: "City manager Manuel Pellegrini is a measured man, but he came out and said Toure is struggling after the death of his brother. You expect our footballers to always be at the top, but sometimes life's not like that."

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy: "On today's game, I think with Chelsea striker Diego Costa, something is going to happen with him soon. Every Chelsea match I watch he's on edge all the time. It won't be long before he flares up. The contest between him and City defender Vincent Kompany will be fascinating. I fancy City. Paul Moore: It's distinctly possible after today's games that Man United will be level on points with Man City. Big change after the first two games.

Liverpool's poor start to the season

    MOTD2 Extra

    BBC Sport

    Brendan Rodgers

Match of the Day commentator Guy Mowbray: "It's become more difficult for Liverpool now and there is certainly more emphasis on their big games, starting next weekend with Everton. But it is far too soon to be drawing conclusions. City had lost three games by this stage last season. It is who Liverpool have lost to that is the problem, they have lost games they would have expected to win. I can understand the frustration but there is a long way to go."

Football writer Amy Lawrence: "The Luis Suarez factor was always going to loom extremely large. Think of the fear factor any other team had playing Liverpool last year, and the connection with Sturridge. Both of those things have been lost this year. Fabio Borini is still in development to an extent, and Mario Balotelli, we all know about. Plus the team is going to need time to get to know one another. It is absurd to expect everything to click straight away."

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murhpy: "We have noticed a common theme. Liverpool have lost Luis Suarez, and Daniel Sturridge is now injured, so who is the danger man? Steven Gerrard. But against Aston Villa Gabriel Agbonlahor was put on him and yesterday Stewart Downing marked him. They starved him of the ball and that is a problem because no other Liverpool player has his range of passing. The other factor is Liverpool's ability to press from the front and pressure teams, which worked so well last year. No one does that like Suarez did. Mario Balotelli's work ethic is not comparable."

Tottenham v West Brom (13:30 BST)

MOTD's John Motson at White Hart Lane

"No Premier League club made more signings than West Brom this summer, and with a new head coach and 11 new recruits all trying to bed in, it is no surprise they have made a slow start.

"Tottenham were in a similar position last summer but a year on they are reaping the benefits after a transitional phase.

"Spurs have only lost once this season and they should have enough to continue their excellent record against the Baggies."

  326. Sunday blues for the Baggies

Tottenham v West Brom (13:30 BST)

West Brom have won none of their last 13 Premier League games on a Sunday, losing seven, last tasting victory when Roy Hodgson guided them to a win against Liverpool in April 2012.

They're due one - and they need one today.

  327. 'I know everything about Leicester'

Leicester v Man Utd (13:30 BST)

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is flexing his managerial muscles.

    Louis van Gaal

On the back of last week's shellacking of a woeful QPR, and in the wake of a shopping spree that has been the envy of most of Europe, the Dutchman this week cast aside any fears of complacency going into today's game at Leicester.

"I have analysed them three times," he said. "I prepare all my matches very thoroughly. I know all about the games they have played already and the game they lost to a minor team [Shrewsbury] in the Capital One Cup.

"I know everything about the team, about individuals, substitutes, what the atmosphere will be like in the stadium, how they take free-kicks, everything."

He even knows how to get off that ring road near the ground. The man is a genius.

MOTD's Martin Fisher at the King Power

"Manchester United unleashed five of their six major summer recruits in the 4-0 dismantling of QPR last week, which gave new boss Louis van Gaal his first competitive win in charge.

"British transfer record signing Angel Di Maria, in particular, sparkled in the midfield diamond, and it will be interesting to see if manager Louis van Gaal will keep faith in that system or revert to the three-man defence which he prefers but his players seemingly do not.

"Leicester, like United, won at the fourth time of asking last weekend. They have every reason to be more satisfied with their start than United though, having already faced three of last season's top five."

    Thank you Saj.

Good afternoon everyone. Today is the day that Chelsea win the league, and West Brom go down. We all agree?

Let's start the day's debate with two massive sweeping statements...

  340. Handover

That's all from me on the morning shift. Taking you through the lunchtime and Drive live text is MC supremo Tom Rostance.

    Carry on reading.

  341. Yaya Toure interview

"Premier League title is in the past"

    Football Focus

    BBC Sport

On the Premier League title race: "Chelsea have started very well and there is no doubt that Liverpool are a fantastic team but Manchester United have signed a few great players and Arsenal are also have a fantastic team.

"We know it is going to be tough this year and we have to try to be as strong as possible. We won the Premier League last season but that is now in the past and we have to focus on improving and being more consistent. As champions we want to win it again so we have to work hard because all the other teams are going to come at us and try to beat us. We need to deliver."

  342. "We need to do the business against Chelsea"

Man City v Chelsea (16:00 BST)

    Football Focus

    BBC Sport

Right, back to today. Four games and arguably the headline act is at 16:00 BST - champions Manchester City v Chelsea, which is live on BBC Radio 5 live.

Football Focus spoke to midfield general Yaya Toure ahead of the game.

Here he is on Chelsea and the start to the season:

"It's been quite a difficult start [two wins, draw and loss]. We finished last season very strongly and then had quite a few players at the World Cup which makes it hard to prepare properly for the start of the season.

"Chelsea are a top side who a have a great shape and are in form. We want to close the gap on Chelsea and need to win on Sunday. It is going to be really important to prove that as a team and as a club that we are growing every day."

  343. Villa training ground lockdown

    Fabian Delph and Tom Cleverley

At least Brendan Rodgers had a fit squad to pick from, unlike Villa manager Paul Lambert.

His squad were hit with what sounded like that virus from that 1995 film Outbreak starring Dustin Hoffman - which I'm sure you all remember.

Six of his troops were affected by a virus and Lambert was without three for the 3-0 home defeat against Arsenal, while three played with the bug.

Afterwards, the Scot revealed Villa's training base would be quarantined.

"We are probably going to let the lads stay away for a couple of days to try to clear it," said Lambert. "The staff as well as they have got it as well."

Where's Hoffman in a bio-suit when you need him?

OluwaMidaz: Liverpool need to admit they are 'doing a Spurs' before they can turn their season around...

  345. Text us on 81111

Mo, Manchester: Brendan Rodgers has got it all wrong. With Simon Mignolet, no matter how good your defence you'll concede. With Gerrard, Henderson and Lucas there's no creativity or pace in midfield. With Suarez gone, signing one striker and half a dozen unknown attacking players makes no sense. To add to all that his team selection has been pathetic and five games into the season the likes of Southampton have adapted, so he has no excuse.

  346. Red and dread

    Sunday Telegraph back page

Liverpool. You might remember that they came close to winning the title last season.

It's been a very mixed bag for them this season - WLWLL. Their recent 'L' came at the Boleyn on Saturday.

West Ham managed a 3-1 win, which might have shocked even the most optimistic Hammer and the most pessimistic Red.

Here's Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers (much more fun if you read it out aloud in a 'Rodgers' style') with his take:

"There is a new expectation at the club. Teams have always wanted to beat us but we are even more of a rival now. We have to deal with it.

"The group has come such a long way. The level expected now has grown. But we have to be able to cope with that and at the moment we're not."

"We arrived early last year. There is no limits on what we want to achieve but we have lost three of our five games. We need to get back to that level as quickly as we can."

  347. Essential Sunday reading

Before we move on to Liverpool, we'll take you on a guided tour of BBC Sport football content you should be reading while you sip on your freshly-squeezed orange juice and biting on that slice of brioche loaf.

    Player reaction on Twitter

Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs: "Great way to respond after Tuesdays defeat! Clean sheet and buzzing for Welbz getting off the mark."

Arsenal beat Aston Villa 3-0 at Villa Park, four days after going down 2-0 away to Borussia Dortmund, with summer signing Danny Welbeck getting his first goal for the club.

Papiss Demba Cisse: "Thanks to all the fans, keep supporting Jonas #happytobeback #alwayslookingforwardjonas."

Cisse scored twice as Newcastle came back from 2-0 down to draw at home to Hull, four days after midfielder Jonas Gutierrez revealed he is suffering from cancer.

  350. Ozil stars at Villa Park

    Mesut Ozil

    Right. Enough Newcastle.

Let's race down south to revisit events in Birmingham, where Arsenal beat Aston Villa 3-0.

Germany World Cup winner Mesut Ozil - let's stress 'World Cup winner' - scored one and impressed with his all-round midfield play.

The frequently-criticised German played in the middle - his preferred position - and shone.

"He responded very well," said manager Arsene Wenger.

"He prefers playing in the middle, but I can find you about 10 other players in my squad who would say the same. It was not just his performance, the whole team played very well. It was the response we needed after Tuesday."

  352. Turning point for Pardew?

    Former Celtic manager Neil Lennon

    Match of the Day

"You have to give Alan Pardew a lot of credit. He was feeling and kicking every ball. I have been in that situation. It is a lonely place. You can all have your staff and family around you, but you need a lot of self-belief. You have to transmit that to your players.

"In my second season at Celtic, we were 10 points behind Rangers and we were 3-0 down at half-time at Kilmarnock. I told the players if they wanted me there on Monday they had to turn it around. Thankfully they did. Maybe today is the same for Alan."

Saturday's 2-2 draw at home to Hull brought relief for Alan Pardew, but should he stay?

Jonathan Caldwell: Everyone has to remember his reputation. Sooner or later every club he manages gets relegated.

Ian Carr: Got to get behind him as Ashley ain't gonna sack him. For the good of the team.

Paul Gary Wilson: They should have fired him for head butting the Hull player last season.

  354. Carroll for Newcastle?

    Andy Carroll
Image caption: Liverpool spent £35m to take Andy Carroll from Newcastle in 2011

And before we move away from Newcastle, check out Sunday's bumper gossip column.

The Sunday People are running a report stating that the Magpies will be looking to bring back local lad Andy Carroll back to St James' Park in January.

    Imagine?

  355. Pardew in print

Mail on Sunday sport front page

A few of Sunday's backpages have led with the Alan Pardew saga.

Our very own Chris Bevan was at St James' Park on Saturday. You can read his take on the situation up at Tyneside on the BBC Football page.

  356. Lay off Pardew - Sir John Hall

    Daily Star Sunday back page

Former Newcastle owner Sir John Hall was on BBC Radio 5 live's Sportsweek programme on Sunday, to give his steer on events up at St James' Park.

He said that anti-Pardew stance taken by supporters was not helping the Magpies.

"I would say to the fans, step back, it doesn't do the club any good the hassle you're giving it, you've got to have confidence and Pardew has to respond to that confidence. He's the man who has got to get it right, and if he doesn't he'll be in trouble.

"Owner Mike Ashley will make that decision, if he has to, he will know what he has to do. It's easy to say get rid of the manager. But we've seen that before, we got rid of a few in my days at Newcastle and there is always the problem of who is the next manager, will he be as good? Will he resurrect the team?"

  357. Pardew feels 'Savaged'

    Newcastle boss Alan Pardew

At about 16:23 BST on Saturday, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew must have been wondering whether he should have got out of bed.

His side, at the bottom the of Premier League, were 2-0 down at home to Hull, fans were on his back, owner Mike Ashley looked worried and he could only imagine what scribes were... 'scribing'.

There was intense media speculation over his future in the week after the 4-0 loss at Southampton, including BBC's Mark Lawrenson stating his position at St James' Park was "untenable" and Robbie Savage suggesting in his column that the manager sounded like a "broken man" after the defeat.

However, by 16:50 yesterday his team had fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 against Hull - and the world was almost right again, although that Savage comment still rankled.

"I thought that article was not right and we've had a lot of press like that," he said. "He said I was a broken man and I was far from that this week."
