Warwickshire v Durham: Keith Barker takes five again for Bears

Keith Barker claimed his second five-wicket haul against Durham this summer as the newly-crowned One-Day Cup winners were made to struggle in their rematch with Warwickshire.

Just three days after losing at Lord's, it was a different story at Edgbaston as the Bears bowled Durham out for 201, left-armer Barker taking 5-59.

Young Ryan Pringle hit a valiant 63 not out as the visitors rallied from 78-6.

The Bears then reached 77-1 at the close following a delay for bad light.

Captain Varun Chopra is still there on 44 but, having returned to the crease to face a further 17 balls after the bad light resumption, he lost opening partner Ian Westwood on 30.

Barker took advantage of early morning swing on a sunny first day of Autumn, taking four wickets in his first 39 deliveries to leave Durham at 43-5 inside the first hour, as he maintained his psychological hold over the Riversiders.

He took eight wickets in the match - including a season's best 6-46 - when Durham suffered the fifth-worst defeat of their 23-year Championship history, losing to Warwickshire by an innings and 188 runs at Chester-le-Street in July.

But, in only his second first-class match, Pringle, aided by Michael Richardson (42) and 26 from Saturday's Lord's hero Gareth Breese, playing in his final game for Durham, the visitors at least prised a batting point.

The Bears started their final game of the season needing 10 points to guarantee finishing runners-up in Division One behind county champions Yorkshire - but that target would be reduced if Sussex fail to claim maximum batting points against relegated Northants on Wednesday morning.

Warwickshire bowling coach Alan Richardson:

It has kind of reaffirmed my belief that hard work is what it is all about.

"We are lucky at Warwickshire that we have some great players and even luckier that we have a group of players who are prepared to put in the hard yards."

Durham batsman Ryan Pringle told BBC Radio Newcastle:

"I didn't find out I was playing until this morning and didn't have long to be nervous. We lost early wickets and I was out there pretty early in the day.

"Barker is a clever bowler, he knows his game pretty well and works to what he knows. He hasn't got a great deal of pace, but he's got the ability to take it both ways and on a pitch like that he got it in the right areas enough to get the rewards."

"Keith Barker has been troubled by injuries at times this season, but he looked back to his athletic, graceful best today.

"Conditions were favourable for swing bowling, but Barker used them with great skill, not moving the ball too much, but just enough to cause problems.

"Warwickshire then batted with purpose until bad light stole an hour from the day, but they are well-placed to build a useful lead."

"Durham had an outside chance of finishing second this season, but their hopes appeared to be over after they were reeling on 66-5 at lunch.

"The Durham tail did offer the resistance that was lacking from the top order and it was nice to see Sunderland-born Ryan Pringle make 63 in only his second game of Championship cricket."
