Mount Sinabung volcano on the Indonesian island of Sumatra erupted again, sending ash and smoke several kilometres into the atmosphere. Long considered to be inactive, it erupted for the first time in 400 years in the early hours of Sunday.

India and Pakistan accused each other of unprovoked firing along the disputed border in Kashmir, in which at least nine civilians were killed. A ceasefire agreed in 2003 remains in place, but the neighbours often accuse each other of violating it.
US-led forces have continued air strikes against Islamic State (IS) militants near the besieged Syrian Kurdish border town of Kobane. By the end of the week, a senior local official said IS had been pushed back towards the edge of the town as a result of the strikes and advances by the town's defenders.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that Ebola is now entrenched in the capital cities of all three worst-affected countries, and is accelerating in almost all settings. WHO deputy head Bruce Aylward warned that the world's response was not keeping up with the disease in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
A freight train derailed in Canada on Tuesday causing some of the hazardous material it was carrying to catch fire. The train was travelling from Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, when the accident happened.
Protesters in Hong Kong continued to demand a fully free vote in elections due in 2017 for the post of chief executive - Hong Kong's leader. Numbers were, however, far lower than the previous week. China has said that, under Hong Kong law, voters will be able to vote freely but from an approved list.
