Mark Jackson: I think Liverpool and Manchester United won't make the Champs League but who will is another question - be quite a shock if apart from say Arsenal and Chelsea or Man City and Chelsea no other "big four" team makes it.

  3. Post update

    On to derby delight

    Manchester City

On to tomorrow, then, and Manchester City versus Manchester United is the standout fixture.

The derby was a fixture to forget for the red half of Manchester last season, as they lost both home and away, but you sense they will fancy their chances this time, with City finding themselves in a poor run of form at the moment.

Robbie Savage feels defeat for City could all but end their title hopes. United will want revenge for last season's defeats.

Whichever way you look at it, it's a big game.

    Saturday round-up

Time for a quick recap of today's big talking points.

Alexis Sanchez put in arguably the performance of the day by scoring two goals as Arsenal beat Burnley 3-0, while league leaders Chelsea continued their unbeaten run by beating QPR 2-1, but the Blues produced a less-than-vintage performance.

Earlier, Liverpool suffered their fourth defeat of the season with a 1-0 loss at Newcastle while Everton failed to score for the first time in the Premier League this season as they were held by 10-man Swansea.

Match reports, reaction and videos are all on the football section of the BBC Sport website now.

    Robbie Savage

    BBC Radio 5 live

"All the question marks Southampton faced at the beginning of the season when everyone was writing them off will have motivated the players who stayed. It creates a mentality of 'we'll show you lot' and although Ronald Koeman gets a lot of credit, it's the players on the pitch who have produced for him."

Robbie Mcilwrick: The thing with Southampton is we have such an exciting team. And they all work for each other.

Nick ‏Mikowaj: Have you looked at Southampton's fixtures so far? That's why I'd hold back on calling them for top four let alone the title.

Clive Jones: I wonder if Morgan Schneiderlin still wants to leave us?

  15. Post update

    Bournemouth 3-2 Brighton

It is a nervy final few minutes for Bournemouth fans as Brighton push forward. Seagulls boss Sami Hyypia could really do with his side at least getting a draw, they have won only one of their last 12 games in all competitions.

Elijah Handley: I have said in the past that Southampton can't be considered genuine contenders for the top four until they stay consistent past the 10-game mark. 10 games in and they're in second. They are contenders and can see them finishing above at least one of Arsenal, United and Liverpool at the moment. Fair play to Koeman.

Jason MacDonald: I'm not a Southampton fan but they are starting to suggest they aren't just pace setters. Little clubs like Manchester United and Liverpool must wonder if they can reach such heights.

Gary Watson: Southampton are doing a Swansea, remember last season? The only good thing is they are putting a nice cushion between Chelsea and Man City at the top of the league. But they will fall away come January by which time Chelsea will have practically won the title.

  21. Post update

    Bournemouth 2-2 Brighton

Marc Pugh charges forward, no doubt buoyed by his earlier goal. He has loads of space ahead of him as he runs at the Brighton defence but decides to have a goal at goal early and ends up dragging a shot wide.

If in doubt, go route one. Brighton go direct as Ali Al-Habsi hits the ball upfield and Gordon Greer makes amends for his earlier own goal by heading it on for Sam Baldock, who runs through on goal and makes no mistake when one-on-one for his first Brighton goal.

There are few better right-sided combinations in the Championship than Simon Francis and Matt Ritchie at Bournemouth, both attack-minded and both capable of getting back and defending. Stoke 2-2 West Ham

    Former England defender Danny Mills

    Final Score

"West Ham have pace and power up front and that scares defenders in any division. They also have a solidity now. When Sam Allardyce was under pressure this time last year, he said 'just wait until I have got my defenders Winston Reid and James Collins back and we will be fine', and they were. Since then he has bolstered the side with some really quality players, and they now carry a serious threat going forward."

  35. HALF-TIME

    Bournemouth 2-1 Brighton

Bournemouth have their noses in front, and probably just about deserve it. They are up to second at the moment, but you sense more goals in this game. Brighton are still in it.

  36. Post update

    Stoke 2-2 West Ham

    Former Tottenham striker Garth Crooks

    Final Score

"The desire West Ham showed today was commendable. At the end of the game the players and fans were clearly delighted with the way they got back into the game, and I thought it was a very worthy performance."

  37. Post update

    Bournemouth 2-1 Brighton

Definitely an entertaining evening of football at Bournemouth as half-time approaches. Four minutes are tagged on to the end of the 45, is it enough time for Brighton to snatch an equaliser?

  38. Post update

    Chelsea 2-1 QPR

    Former Tottenham striker Garth Crooks

    Final Score

"If Chelsea had played a better side they would have dropped points today. They had another gear and only called on it when they needed it. But I think what Jose Mourinho wants is a higher standard on a regular basis, and he is entitled to want that.

"I love the way Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic play together, and now Oscar is coming into the mix too. Manchester City cannot afford to lose tomorrow, otherwise they are out of it."

  39. Post update

    Newcastle 1-0 Liverpool

    Former England defender Danny Mills

    Final Score

"I've played for Alan Pardew and as all-rounder - a manager and a coach - he is one of the better ones. He is innovative in the dressing room and has got those Newcastle players playing for him and playing for each other. But I asked Newcastle fans what it would take for them to start singing his name. They said they never would. Even if they finished in the top four? They said it just would not happen."

    Newcastle manager Alan Pardew
  40. GOAL

Bournemouth 2-1 Brighton - Marc Pugh

Bournemouth back in front as Brighton fail to clear their lines from a corner and Marc Pugh twists his body to meet a high, loose ball and volley into the back of the net. Great strike.

  41. Player reaction on Twitter

    Arsenal 3-0 Burnley

    Theo Walcott

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey: "Good win and performance, on another day we may have scored more. Big welcome back to Theo Walcott, great to have you back mate!"

  42. Post update

    Newcastle 1-0 Liverpool

    Former England defender Danny Mills

    Final Score

"I think Liverpool will struggle to make the top four. Defensively last year they were very poor. They ended up with the ninth or 10th best defensive record - that is ultimately why they did not win the league last season. And then the fact they came so close means everybody is a little bit flat.

"Steven Gerrard is getting older, Mario Balotelli has come in and I think it was a massive gamble that appears to have backfired. He is not a team player. And maybe Brendan Rodgers has to find a different way of playing if he is going to continue with him."

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard after their defeat to Newcastle
  43. Post update

    Newcastle 1-0 Liverpool

    Former Tottenham striker Garth Crooks

    Final Score

"Last season if Brendan Rodgers had not been so cavalier away to Crystal Palace the league title might have finished with another story, but in terms of this season I think he was unlucky to lose Daniel Sturridge to injury.

"However, Rodgers is where he is and I don't think Liverpool should panic. They are on course for a top-four place. No they are not playing great but it is not doom and gloom. Get Sturridge fit and there are goals."

  44. Manager reaction

    Leicester 0-1 West Brom

    Alan Irvine

West Brom manager Alan Irvine: "It means a lot. It is a difficult place to come to and we are the first team to win here. We had to cope with the pressure they put you under and we had to pass the ball. I'm really pleased with the performance.

"It was a complete team performance. We needed a threat up front and we did that. At the back we were solid against some really difficult forwards to play against.

"Three points. Clean sheet. It's a great feeling for us and it gives us a platform to go into the next game - Newcastle at home - which will be really difficult for us.

"I said all along it was going to take a bit of time, but it was important to find the best way of playing for our group of players and we are getting closer to that."

  45. GOAL

Bournemouth 1-1 Brighton - Adrian Colunga

Brighton hit back, and hit back swiftly. Great work from Joao Teixeira as the on-loan Liverpool midfielder slices open the Bournemouth defence with a ball for Adrian Colunga, who rounds Artur Boruc and equalises.

  47. Manager reaction

    Everton 0-0 Swansea

    Antolin Alcaraz

    Everton boss Roberto Martinez:

"You want to win the game. You are looking at statistics before the sending off for Swansea and we were in control.

"I'm disappointed by the game as I thought it was going to be more of a spectacle but it didn't turn out to be. I thought we were a little frustrated.

"Overall, it was a good clean sheet because you can leave yourselves exposed. Maybe our tempo in possession was not as sharp as it could have been.

"I haven't seen the replay (of the alleged handball from Antolin Alcaraz).

"Alcaraz is injured and going to be out for a long time. It is a problem with a joint in his shoulder. It is one of those awkward accidents that happens in football and we wish him well."

  48. GOAL

Bournemouth 1-0 Brighton - Gordon Greer OG

Oh dear Gordon Greer! The big defender gifts Bournemouth the opener when he heads an innocuous cross into the area beyond a perplexed Ali Al-Habsi and into his own net.

  49. Post update

    Bournemouth 0-0 Brighton

Bournemouth have weathered that early storm and are just starting to control matters now. They are still to test Ali Al-Habsi in the Brighton goal, however, with the on-loan Wigan man's only action of note racing off his line to kick clear Matt Ritchie's high ball.

  50. Manager reaction

    Stoke 2-2 West Ham

    Mark Hughes

Stoke manager Mark Hughes is angry that West Ham midfielder Alex Song was not penalised by referee Chris Foy for a challenge on Mame Biram Diouf in the build-up to the visitors' first goal.

He tells BBC Sport: "It was dangerous play. It was reckless. We're grateful that Diouf jumped out of the way, because it could have been a nasty collision.

"The referee should come down on challenges like that - he needed to stop play, but apparently he was trying to play an advantage, which we didn't get. But it's not the first time we've been disappointed by a referee this season.

"I think everybody at the game knows who were the better side, and who created the most chances. Unfortunately, sport doesn't always give the spoils to the team who deserve it."

Hughes, asked if the dropping of points has spoilt his 51st birthday today: "Very much so. We should be celebrating, because our performance deserved maximum points."

  51. "Foxes shouldn't flap"

    Leicester 0-1 West Brom

    Former Tottenham striker Garth Crooks

    Final Score

"A dose of realism is important for Leicester but I don't think they should lose their nerve. If they can pick up four or five points between now and Christmas they are back in it. If you look at the teams around them, Everton have 13 points, Tottenham have 11 points, and Leicester have nine. These are good sides. Keep your nerve and you could be all right."

  52. Manager reaction

    Leicester 0-1 West Brom

Leicester manager Nigel Pearson: "It took an own goal to separate the sides today and that is an indicator of how small the margins are.

    Chris Brunt

"I have to look back at the game and rue the fact we didn't make enough of some situations. That is how it is going for us at the moment.

"We can't get too wrapped up in the negativity that some people throw in our direction. When you have setbacks in life you have to take a look at what is actually going on.

"We feel we have a lot of quality within the squad and that is in all positions. Today we were slightly unlucky.

"We have some really good highs and we have had some lows. Days like today are frustrating experiences.

"I know what we are capable off and I'm still very confident, given a little bit more time, we will make sure we maximize our quality."

    Final Score

"Every team needs a fighter. Arsenal have had them before with Emmanuel Petit and Patrick Vieira. Manchester United have Wayne Rooney, and this Arsenal side have Alexis Sanchez. Bournemouth 0-0 Brighton

It is the side struggling for form who has the first chance of the game as Gary Gardner's low free-kick pinballs off the boot of Tommy Elphick and behind the Bournemouth goal. Could have gone anywhere.

  63. Post update

    Hull 0-1 Southampton

    Former Tottenham striker Garth Crooks

    Final Score

"Southampton have slipped into second in the table while remaining under the radar, without our full attention. But they are doing extremely well. They have momentum and are keeping their form going - and now they do have our full attention. They have such a good spirit in the team and therein lies their success."

  64. Manager reaction

    Chelsea 2-1 QPR

    Harry Redknapp

QPR manager Harry Redknapp to BBC Sport: "I thought it was a harsh penalty that won it for Chelsea. It was a shoulder to shoulder charge and our guy was a bit stronger than the Chelsea guy, who went over.

"We played well against Liverpool and we've played well against Chelsea. But to get no points from the two games is obviously disappointing. However, there's lots of positives. We showed a great attitude and I think we have got enough to stay in this division."

  65. Manager reaction

    Arsenal 3-0 Burnley

    Sean Dyche

Burnley manager Sean Dyche: "There is a reality to our challenge and that is not the reality, that is the top end of the market. They are a high quality side. They create chances and it could have been more but that is just by the nature of the quality of their players.

"We had been solid before Tom Heaton had to make great saves but after they scored they opened the game up. They get in great passing lanes, they have a great shape, they have pace, power and energy but they also have tactical awareness.

"It not just about one win. We need more than one win, make no mistake. It has to be. That is the challenge. The improvements are marginal it is the learning curve, it is a high state of learning in the Premier League."

On two-goal Alexis Sanchez: "I was saying to Danny Ings, look at players like Alexis Sanchez. He will fight, run and tackle when he needs to. But that is top end of the market players."

  66. Post update

    Stoke 2-2 West Ham

    Former England defender Danny Mills

    Final Score

"There was a lot of controversy in the game, but especially so for the first goal. Alex Song went steaming into a challenge and it was so late that the referee says play on almost because it was so late - the Stoke player jumps just over him. West Ham went up the field and got one back, and after that they were in the ascendency and looked like they might even get a winner."

  67. Manager reaction

    Everton 0-0 Swansea

    Garry Monk

    Swansea manager Garry Monk:

"All in all it was a well earned point.

"It was a cheap yellow which Jonjo Shelvey (who was sent off) gave away for the first booking. I explained it to him but he is a clever lad and understands that when you are on a yellow you can't make those kind of challenges."

On being denied a penlty for an apparent handball by Everton defender Antolin Alcaraz: "I didn't know you were supposed to play with two keepers.

"I'd be very pleased if my keeper pulled off a save like that. We didn't get it so what can I say?

"I'm extremely proud of my team - the way they dug in for such a long period. They deserve that point for the effort they put in."

  68. Text us on 81111

    Chelsea 2-1 QPR

    Chelsea's players

Andy in Armagh: Forget Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas, Eden Hazard and Oscar. Nemanja Matic has been Chelsea's standout player both today and so far this season. He makes the whole team tick.

Jill in Leamington: Chelsea will have such a hard choice for their Player of the Year. Who do you choose from Courtois, Costa, Oscar, Fabregas, Matic, Hazard and there's still time for the other players to make their mark!

Lisa in London: Real struggle at Stamford Bridge today but titles can be won in ugly games like this. three points are three points.

  69. KICK-OFF

  70. Player reaction

    Hull 0-1 Southampton

    Victor Wanyama

Victor Wanyama has given Match of the Day's Alistair Mann a colourful description of his wonder strike which gave Southampton a 1-0 win at Hull.

"I see the keeper," he said. "I just think this is a chance and I had to smash it. I had a good contact so…nice goal. It's one of the best I have ever scored."

  71. League Two round-up

Wycombe Wanderers fought back from a goal down to beat Oxford and return to the top of the table at the expense of Luton, whose seven-match winning run ended as they were pegged back 1-1 by Exeter.

Burton Albion's first game since manager Gary Rowett's departure to Birmingham ended in a 1-1 draw with Plymouth. That result allowed Shrewsbury to move into the top three after they beat Dagenham and Redbridge courtesy of a Liam Lawrence penalty with the last kick of the game.

Lowly York gained a valuable 1-0 win at Cheltenham thanks to a strike from Diego De Girolamo, while Portsmouth cruised to a 3-0 win against Carlisle.

  72. Post update

    Chelsea 2-1 QPR

    Vargas

QPR boss Harry Redknapp thinks that the penalty decision against his side was 'harsh.'

"It was a shoulder to shoulder charge," says Harry.

  73. Manager reaction

    Stoke 2-2 West Ham

    Sam Alalrdyce

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce, speaking to BBC Sport: "When you're 2-0 down away from home anywhere in the Premier League, getting anything is a terrific comeback. For us, that's what it had to be.

"It wasn't that we weren't trying, but we couldn't get our passing game going - partly because of the conditions, and partly because Stoke were doing a good job on us.

"I always thought there was a goal in us. We changed the shape of the team and went for it, knowing we'd either lose 3-0 or get it back to 2-1, at which point Stoke might get nervous.

"Stewart Downing scored with his right foot. People think he's all left foot, and he isn't. We moved him into the middle from the wing, and he made a terrific difference."

  74. Manager reaction

    Arsenal 3-0 Burnley

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: "It was a question of patience and quality and I think we did all of that. It was important not to concede a goal and in the end it was a comfortable win but everyone works hard in the Premier League.

"It was a top performance from Alexis Sanchez. His quality is exceptional, he takes responsibility and goes at people. He fights, he can score, that is what you want from great players.

Unbeaten Bristol City marched on at the top of the table as Kieran Agard's decisive strike ended Oldham's 13-match unbeaten run. The Robins are now five points clear of nearest challengers Preston, who slipped to a 3-0 defeat at Rochdale.

An arguably even more impressive result was achieved by Scunthorpe, who climbed off the bottom with a 2-1 win at Peterborough. Walsall also sealed an eye-catching away victory against promotion hopefuls Notts County.

MK Dons overturned a half-time deficit to beat Swindon 2-1, while Barnsley notched a 1-0 win against Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

That's your lot for Premier League action, but if that leaves a football-shaped hole in your Saturday then there is Bournemouth versus Brighton in the Championship.

Bournemouth, who beat Birmingham 8-0 last weekend, have won seven of their last eight games in all competitions. Brighton have won only one of their last 12 games.

We'll have updates from that game here.

  80. Championship round-up

    Wigan

Watford opened up a two-point gap at the top of the table, coming from behind to beat Millwall 3-1. The Hornets leapfrogged previous leaders Derby following the Rams' dramatic defeat at Brentford, who came from behind to win 2-1 thanks to a last-minute Stuart Dallas goal.

Leeds' latest managerial change failed to improve results, as Neil Redfearn oversaw a 3-1 defeat at Cardiff. It was also a losing start for new Blackpool boss Lee Clark, whose side were defeated 2-0 at home by Ipswich.

Middlesbrough moved into the second automatic promotion spot with a 3-0 win at Rotherham, while Wigan and Fulham shared the points - and six goals - in a thriller at the DW Stadium.

Huddersfield cruised to a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest, whose fine start to the season seems a very distant memory, and Blackburn beat Reading 3-1 at Ewood Park.

    Arsenal 3-0 Burnley

    bURNLEY

Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton, speaking to BBC Sport: "It is frustrating. We are desperate for a win but I think we went about the game well. We restricted them to few chances for up to 70 minutes. There are things we can learn from today and hopefully that puts us in a good shape going forward.

"Everyone is giving everything they have to get a result. If we keep doing what we have been doing we are confident, but it is about not letting the gap get too big."

  83. Player reaction

    Stoke 2-2 West Ham

    Stewart Downing

West Ham winger Stewart Downing, who created the first and scored the second to inspire a comeback from 2-0 down: "The manager gave us a rocket a half-time, but I'm sure he would be happy with a point at the end of that.

"We would probably have lost that game last season by two or three goals. But if you can pick up points on the road when you are not playing well, that's always a bonus."

Gus and George, London: Alexis Sanchez is on such a different level he should be wearing the yellow Tour de France jersey to differentiate him from the other Arsenal players.

Paul, Warrington: Liverpool have the look and feel of a team going nowhere. I can see them finishing outside the top four and trophyless.

    BBC Sport at the Britannia

"If you were wondering whether West Ham would keep up their fine recent form without the prolific Diafra Sakho up front, the answer so far is a resounding 'no'. In Sakho's absence, the other half of the Hammers new-look strike-force, Enner Valencia, has been anonymous and it is Stoke who have been far busier and brighter in attack. The Potters should be further ahead too."

Liverpool threw me because I wasn't expecting them to play three at the back, but the back four were very strong - Paul Dummett was outstanding. We have pace and discipline - we've got a juvenile spirit about us. And Ayoze (Perez) has just got a knack of being in the right place."

Alexis Sanchez. If he is not creating chances, he is getting on the end of them. Santi Cazorla spots the Chilean in space on the left and splits the defence with a pass to send his team-mate away. Entertaining stuff now at the Emirates as chances fly in at both ends. First, Scott Arfield scampers towards the Gunners' area with Danny Ings in support, the midfielder spots his team-mate and passes low but Mathieu Flamini is back quickly to stab the ball away from Ings' feet. Then, Alexis Sanchez cuts in from the left and smacks a decent effort from outside the area that Tom Heaton parries.

Watford can go top with a win today but they are currently losing at home to Millwall, who lead 1-0 at Vicarage Road through Martyn Woolford's strike. Middlesbrough have raced into a 2-0 lead at Rotherham that moves them up to second in the 'as it stands' table.

At the other end of the table, Lee Clark's Blackpool are trailing at home to Ipswich in the manager's first game. Nottingham Forest, without a win in eight, are already 2-0 down at Huddersfield.

  206. GOAL

Stoke 1-0 West Ham - Victor Moses (33 mins)

    Victor Moses. Pinball wizard.

Stoke take a very scrappy lead when the ball is pumped into the box from the right and there's bodies everywhere before Moses finally bundles the ball over the line. West Ham had umpteen chances to clear. Big Sam will be livid. Row Z, lads. Row Z.

  207. GOAL

    Chelsea 1-0 QPR - Oscar (32 mins)

Brazilian class! What a finish from Oscar! Absolutely tremendous.

It's yet another assist from Cesc Fabregas, who must be setting all manner of records. He glides through two men before laying the ball into the run of Oscar. He's wide on the right of the box but bends the outside of his boot around it to arrow it into the far corner. Such a good strike...

Chance for QPR! Leroy Fer does brilliantly to power through the middle - like Yaya Toure in his pomp - it all opens up for him but at the last minute he checks onto his right foot and is tackled. At the other end, Cesc Fabregas, from a similar position, pulls the trigger early and tests Rob Green.

    Arsenal 0-0 Burnley

Half-a-chance for Burnley as a heavy touch from Mathieu Flamini lets in Marvin Sordell, but the Frenchman recovers well to force the striker wide and then cut out his attempted pull-back. Moments later, Arsenal have penalty appeals for a penalty waved away when George Boyd appears to handle the ball when jumping.

England boss Roy Hodgson has made the trip to the KC Stadium and has been witness to the only goal in the 15:00 GMT Premier League kick-offs. Apart from that, though, there has been very little for him to enjoy, with play largely being contested in midfield. It's a tight battle.

  230. CLOSE!

    Arsenal 0-0 Burnley

A game of few chances at the Emirates so far, but the best of a limited bunch falls to Danny Welbeck, who dribbles his way into the area and clips a shot beyond Burnley keeper Tom Heaton, but the ball strikes the body of Kieran Trippier and deflects behind for a corner, which comes to nothing.

Think it was towards the end of the 1985-86 season when they last had a genuine reason to sing that.

"Mind you, old habits clearly die hard for Hammers boss Big Sam Allardyce. Forget the passing game - West Ham kicked off by playing the ball back to James Collins, who launched it high and long towards the Stoke area as three team-mates gave chase."

"The real challenge in going a whole Premier League season unbeaten is that on any given day you can lose to any team in the Premier League. It is very difficult to match what Arsenal achieved in 2004.

"Chelsea have a chance though, and they do have an air about them. Jose Mourinho sets a certain standard and he will not let it slip. Even when 6-0 up in the Champions League they do not let up, a bit like Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United."

"Thibaut Courtois was brilliant at Atletico Madrid last season, and he has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water. He has been absolutely phenomenal. When you think how well Petr Cech did last year, and still Jose Mourinho was prepared to drop him."

Andy: I still want Alan Pardew out. We need a change of ownership so we can begin to compete at the right level. Pardew is Mike Ashley's preferred man: he's tactically naive, negative in his approach to most games, and frequently an embarrassment on the touchline (see incidents with linesmen, Pellegrini, Meyler, etc), but he stays because he doesn't criticise Mike's regime. West Brom make 10 changes to the side that lost to Bournemouth in the League Cup in midweek and revert to the same side that drew 2-2 with Crystal Palace in their last Premier League outing. Saido Berahino leads the line ahead of Stephane Sessegnon.

Leicester City starting XI: Schmeichel, De Laet, Konchesky, Drinkwater, Morgan, James, Vardy, King, Cambiasso, Wasilewski, Nugent.

High-flying West Ham are forced into one change from their impressive win over Manchester City last weekend. In-form striker Diafra Sakho, who will make Premier League history if he scores in a seventh successive Premier League start, has failed to shake off a shoulder injury. Hammers boss Sam Allardyce reverts to one up front, Enner Valencia, and brings in Cheikhou Kouyate to bolster his midfield.

    John Roder

Match of the Day commentator at the Britannia Stadium

"The goalscoring exploits of West Ham's Diafra Sakho have quite rightly earned him many headlines since his August move from French club Metz. To score in seven successive matches - six in six in the Premier League - is a terrific start to his time at Upton Park.

"Sakho is a doubt for today, though, and if he is absent then the Britannia Stadium crowd may again struggle to see goals. Amazingly, only six goals (three for Stoke, three for their opponents) have been scored there in the league so far this season, and that is the lowest total for a venue in all four English divisions.

"The Hammers have won their last three in a row but they have kept only one clean sheet in the Premier League this season. It's an intriguing match to predict and one I am looking forward to tremendously."

"Eighteenth-Century English poet Alexander Pope once wrote: "Blessed is he who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed."

"His words are now becoming more and more applicable to fans of second-placed Southampton. Manager Ronald Koeman knows he has to manage the expectation and, having also guided his side to a League Cup quarter-final this week, his side will arrive at Hull with confidence soaring.

"However, Hull City have their own reasons for wanting to plant a seed of doubt in Southampton minds. October has demonstrated the Tigers' stoic resolve, remaining unbeaten despite awkward trips to the Emirates and, most-recently, Anfield.

"Their propensity to give up winning positions has been their Achilles heel and is the significant reason why they've drawn five of their last eight league games."

"If the result's right for him, this will be a special day for Everton manager Roberto Martinez. It's his 200th Premier League game as a manager, and it comes against the club that gave him his first break.

"Everton are back on track and in search of a third successive league win - form which has coincided with the returns of both Seamus Coleman and Ross Barkley.

"It's true Chelsea have a recent sticky record against QPR, and Jose Mourinho's men did make hard work of the Capital Cup tie at Shrewsbury on the back of an arduous draw at Old Trafford.

"But they've looked imperious at home. They've easily been the best side in the Premier League this season. This has to be a banker home win. Chelsea are unbeaten at the Bridge against promoted sides in 13 years and 40 matches.

"Charlie Austin is in good form for QPR and I just can't see them holding out. Chelsea should have too much penetration and movement between the lines."

"One of the things often said about the Premier League is that anyone can beat anyone else on their day. They trot that one out along with the "there are no easy games in international football" line. Well, believe me, I'm trying, and I love a good upset as much as anyone, but it's hard to see Burnley winning at Arsenal.

"The Gunners are the only team in the Premier League yet to suffer a home league defeat in 2014. If Burnley don't win on Saturday they will join a small and ignominious band of Premier League teams to go 10 or more games without winning from the start of a season."

  335. YELLOW CARD

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

He never looked set! Moussa Sissoko ran at the Liverpool backline, Martin Skrtel looked panicked and eventually just chopped down the Newcastle man. That's a booking, and a free-kick in a dangerous place.

"The best two openings have come in the last two minutes; first with Newcastle having an effort cleared off the line. Despite the fact they have lost Gabriel Obertan, Newcastle have come in into the game much more now. But on the whole neither goalkeeper has had much to do."

A set-piece looks the most likely avenue to goal for either side. After Newcastle had Liverpool worried, the Reds should score at the other end. Martin Skrtel has time and space to win a header from six yards out, but screws it wide, before running into Sammy Ameobi and getting winded in the process.

    Double blow.

  339. CLOSE!

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

Glen Johnson, all is forgiven! I may have questioned the right-back's defending earlier but that is fine stuff, reacting well to head off the line after Papiss Cisse helped on a corner.

There's no Stan Collymore, Robbie Fowler, Sir Les of Ferdinand, Tino Asprilla, Kevin Keegan or Roy Evans on display at St James' Park this afternoon, but can the class of 2014 serve up some mid-90s action?

The way Liverpool have been defending of late, seven goals is not out of the question. Can Alan Pardew's side continue their recent upturn in fortunes?

  397. 'Collymore closing iinnnnnn!'

    Newcastle v Liverpool (12:45 GMT)

    Stan Collymore celebrates

Newcastle v Liverpool. Liverpool v Newcastle.

Eighteen years ago, when the Spice Girls ruled the airwaves and the Spice Boys ruled Anfield, these two sides served up a bona fide, all-time classic Premier League game.

Stan Collymore's late goal gave the Reds a 4-3 win as Newcastle's implosion from title certainties to runners-up continued. Collymore closed in, Kevin Keegan slumped in his seat, the Kop erupted. Classic moment.

A year later, they did it again! A second 4-3 at Anfield, and it was decided that from that day on every single meeting of the sides would be televised.

They haven't come remotely close to matching those two games for excitement or entertainment since. Is today the day?

  400. Set-piece woe

    Newcastle v Liverpool (12:45 GMT)

Liverpool are about as comfortable defending set-pieces at the moment as Sir Alex Ferguson, or indeed anyone, would be sharing a lift with Roy Keane.

It's not the first time the Reds have been dodgy trying to clear their lines from corners, free-kicks and crosses as Newcastle boss Alan Pardew well knows.

In his playing days as a blond-haired defender, Pardew scored the winner in Crystal Palace's 4-3 win over Liverpool in an FA Cup semi-final in 1990 when he nodded in after a corner that had been flicked on.

Palace's other goals came from a right-wing cross and two free-kicks as Liverpool's problems from set pieces from that era began. Now, they seem to be back. Let's see if current Newcastle boss Pardew takes a leaf out of his old Palace side's book when his side welcome the Reds to St James' Park for today's early kick-off.

Doug Short: I needed something to take water in, the only thing I could find was my mum's thermos flask. We ended up using it as a goal post. As a little lad I didn't realise they were lined with glass. First shot that hit the post. Smash!. Let's just say, mum wasn't happy!

Stephen Murray: When we were teenagers and mum and dad used to go out shopping, we used to take the fireguard out on to The Green in front of the house.

Derek Hayward: Milk crates. They were very versatile, we used them as wickets as well.

  405. Gartner Hype Cycle

    Newcastle v Liverpool (12:45 GMT)

    Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli

Let's focus back on Newcastle v Liverpool again. I attended a workshop about the digital world earlier this week (I know that sounds as interesting as a Manuel Pellegrini news conference but before you scroll away please bear with me on this).

During the workshop I was introduced to the Gartner Hype Cycle around new technology and I couldn't help thinking of how it also applies to Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli.

Basically, a new piece of technology comes out, everybody starts raving about like its going to change the world, people then realise its limitations, it dives in credibility before it's proven that it does serve a purpose and regains some lost respectability.

Apart from that last bit, the same could be said of Balotelli after some regarded his £16m move to Anfield as a bit of bargain.

He did score in midweek though so maybe that last bit will come true. He and Liverpool will certainly hope so.

  406. Are strikers tough enough?

    Arsenal v Burnley (15:00 GMT)

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes strikers from Europe have gone a bit soft and a lack of street football is to blame.

"When football is more formalised, it's less about developing your individual skill and fighting attitude. We've lost that a bit," says Wenger.

"Maybe it's because in Europe street football has gone. If you go back 30 or 40 years in England, life was tougher.

"We're much more protective and have all become a bit softer.

"In street football when you're 10-years-old, you want to play with 15-year-olds. Then you have to prove you're good, you have to fight and win impossible balls."

Matthew Brewer: Used to play with my brother in my grandma's living room using an orange. The fireplace was one goal and the door frame was the other.

Gareth Griffiths: Chemical waste bins playing lab football. We would make the ball out of latex gloves wrapped inside each other and twisted until it became a decent size. Usually took about 50 gloves and people would pass it around taking it in turns to improve it. Lab football taught us great skills as the danger involved was an incentive to show great glove ball control.

Chris Baker: I can remember my mum sending me to the shops to pick up some bits. On the way back I bumped into a few mates playing footie, I joined in and we started a match, I made the second goal from a six-pint of milk and a four-pack of baked beans... Those were the days.

    Hull v Southampton (15:00 GMT)

Former Fulham manager Rene Meulensteen on Graziano Pelle: "I remember when he first came to Holland at AZ, and he didn't do anything. He went away and Ronald Koeman brought him back to Feyenoord and something worked for him. He is also the best looking player in the Premier League now."

  411. One to watch

    Hull v Southampton (15:00 GMT)

Southampton striker Graziano Pelle will be on Football Focus

Southampton striker Graziano Pelle must be asking himself what all the fuss is about when it comes to the Premier League supposedly being one of the toughest leagues in the world.

The 29-year-old Italian was signed from Feyenoord in the summer after scoring 55 goals in 66 matches for the Dutch club under current boss Ronald Koeman.

He has now scored six in nine and will be out to improve on that when Southampton visit Hull later on. Before that though, you can hear his thoughts during an interview on BBC Football Focus, which starts at 12:10 GMT on BBC One.

  412. England Women set for Wembley record

England Women are set to play in front of a larger Wembley crowd in a friendly against Germany on 23 November than watched Roy Hodgson's men tackle Norway at the national stadium.

The men's friendly against Norway on 3 September drew an attendance of just 40,181, the smallest Wembley crowd for a senior England game since the stadium was rebuilt.

The Football Association says ticket sales for the women's game on Friday were hovering just under 41,000 and could reach 50,000. I wonder if Roy will be there.

    Robbie Fowler

Former Liverpool, Leeds and England striker

"Petr Cech hasn't thrown his dummies out of the pram since Thibaut Courtois was made Chelsea number one and fair play to him for that. He's been true to himself. He deserves to be a number one goalkeeper but he also wants what is best for his current club.

"When I first got into the Liverpool side, Ian Rush was the master. He could have gone the other way and said he wasn't interested in helping me but he used to take me aside and talk me through games. He was brilliant towards me."

You can watch an interview with Courtois on the BBC Sport website with the full version to be aired on BBC Football Focus, which starts at 12:10 GMT on BBC One.

  415. QPR win anyone?

    Chelsea v QPR (15:00 GMT)

Chelsea are four points clear at the top of the Premier League and already have a look of champions about them. They face QPR in a west London derby today and there aren't many predicting other than a comfortable victory for the Stamford Bridge outfit.

QPR will have other ideas and they don't have too far to go back to remember their last win over the Blues. It was January 2013 and a certain Shaun Wright-Phillips got the winner.

  418. Happy Hammers

Stoke v West Ham (15:00 GMT)

    West Ham manager Sam Allardyce

Let's get back to today's action and on to one of the surprise packages of the season in West Ham.

There has been a team of people unsuccessfully trying to wipe the smile off Hammers boss Sam Allardyce's face. But who can blame Big Sam for being a Happy Hammer.

He would have been ejected out of the West Ham hot-seat if some of the Upton Park fans had had their way.

Now, they're not quite throwing roses into his path, but he's won a lot of them round with the style of football his side are playing and, most importantly, results.

The Hammers have beaten Liverpool this season and go into the Stoke game on the back of a win over champions Manchester City as they sit pretty in the top four.

BBC Sport's Chris Bevan will be at the Britannia today and wants to get the views of West Ham fans so say hello if you see him.

Michael Chittock: Jumpers mainly used but also upside down bikes, with a mean ricochet if they hit the tyres.

Craig Swanny Swanson: We used to use our bikes, only problem was when you were in goal and dived you used to hit the pedal.

Yanto Miklos Fulep: We discreetly borrowed some temporary boundary fencing from a five-a-side court they were in the process of building on the estate. The blocks that support the fence were too heavy so we discreetly borrowed two trolleys from our local supermarket to keep the fence upright and they acted as posts and the fence was the net. We hardly played on the five-a-side court when it was completed because our makeshift goals were the best.

  420. Man City on brink of crisis

Man City v Man Utd (13:30 GMT, Sunday)

    Man City manager Manuel Pellegrini

One of the big games this weekend in the Premier League takes place on Sunday with Manchester City taking on Manchester United.

BBC Sport pundit Robbie Savage says in his latest column that there could be doubts over City boss Manuel Pellegrini's future if results don't go his way.

"I am expecting Chelsea to beat QPR on Saturday and, if they do, City will go into Sunday's derby with Manchester United nine points behind Jose Mourinho's side," says Savage.

"After two defeats and a draw in their last three games, the defending Premier League champions will be under massive pressure to find some form, beat their neighbours and stay in touch at the top.

"If they don't get three points against United then, with their hopes of Champions League progress also in the balance, there could be serious questions asked about Pellegrini's future for the first time since he arrived in English football in the summer of 2013."

  422. Newspaper round-up - Rent free Olympic stadium?

    The Sun

In The Sun (subscription required), former Leyton Orient chairman Barry Hearn calls on London Mayor Boris Johnson to reveal the costs behind the Olympic Park Stadium and the terms of West Ham's lease on the venue.

"It's time for Boris to come off the fence and let us know where our money has gone and what the deal is."

Amid rumours the Hammers will pay £2m-a-year in rent Hearns adds: "For a Premier League club that is a minimal rent, especially with the stadium authority paying for the stewarding, police costs, stadium and pitch maintenance if the rumours are to be believed. So effectively West Ham are getting a freebie."

  425. Could Gerrard leave Liverpool?

Newcastle v Liverpool (12:45 GMT, Saturday)

    Robbie Fowler

Former Liverpool, Leeds and England striker

"If Steven said it, we'll take it on board. Speaking from a selfish point of view, I love Steven Gerrard and I'd love him to stay at Liverpool.

"It's like Ryan Giggs at Manchester United - players come into the club and are instantly lifted by seeing Gerrard. He might not be as good as he used to be - like Giggs - but he's still a class act.

"The common consensus is that he will go abroad if he did leave Anfield, but if he did become available I think clubs in the Premier League would want him. He's still that good a player."

  426. Gerrard exit?

    Newcastle v Liverpool (12:45 GMT)

    Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard

Is the unthinkable going to happen for Liverpool fans? Reds skipper Steven Gerrard could be on his way out of Anfield after revealing he could join another club if he is not offered a new contract.

The 34-year-old has been at Liverpool since joining the club's youth academy at the age of nine. He has ruled out the possibility of retirement when his current deal expires in May.

"I won't be retiring this summer. I will play beyond this season," says Gerrard. "We will have to wait and see if that's at Liverpool or somewhere else. That's Liverpool's decision."

"I do miss the Premier League, I miss games in Europe, but I'm enjoying it here. Would managing again in the Premier League prove a point? I'm not bothered what people think. If I popped off tomorrow I'd still think I've been lucky and would be satisfied - but there is still more to do."

    Daily Telegraph

In the Daily Telegraph, England assistant coach Gary Neville, while quick to point out he is loathe to say "it was better in my day", addresses the subject of modern day defending.

He writes: "When I played, most training was on defending but now I look at teams and think they do not understand the basics. I see no return to the old ways of defending. It's like the guy who loves Ceefax pining for its return in the face of the internet. It's not coming back."

    The Time

First things first. Let's have a look around today's newspapers and see what's going on.

The Times (subscription required) features an interview with former Spurs and Arsenal defender Sol Campbell, now 40, owner of a £25m property on Cheyne Walk overlooking the Thames, and a mini stately home, Hallington Hall in Northumberland. Campbell is considering a new career in politics and both of his extravagant addresses would be subject to Labour's proposed mansion tax.

On the subject of a politician's salary he says: "I don't know that they should be paid as much as footballers but I do think MPs should be paid a lot more. You would then get a different type of person going for the job. Now, you need some private wealth to do it.

"Ethnic minorities, working class and female numbers are too low."

Newcastle v Liverpool - 40 years of goals

After that build-up, some of you will probably doubt Newcastle and Liverpool can live up to the hype and, if it doesn't, I apologise now.

What I will say in my defence is that I'd be surprised if it didn't. Why? Well, using an actual real stat, the last time these two were involved in a goalless league game was way back in 1974. Yes, that's 40, let me say that again, 40, years ago.

  436. Welcome

    Newcastle v Liverpool (12:45 GMT)

I heard a stat on the wireless that 70% of people pretended they weren't in for Halloween yesterday to avoid trick or treaters. Now, I'm no Judge Judy so whether you did or didn't is down to your own conscience.

But, when it comes to Newcastle v Liverpool, the stat is that the game is 100% guaranteed to deliver entertainment. I've obviously completely and utterly made that last stat up for my own benefit but it's to emphasise that when these two meet it's usually a football treat to savour.

Morning all. The Magpies host the Reds today and kick-off is at 12:45 GMT. I can't wait already.
