Ipswich waterfront 'wine rack': Planning granted

The final piece of planning permission has been granted so work can resume on an "eyesore" block of unfinished flats on Ipswich waterfront.

Building work on Regatta Quay began in 2007, but stopped in 2009 when the developer went into administration.

The new owner, Marina Developments, said the 20-storey building, known locally as the "wine rack", never had permission for the top two floors,.

Ipswich Borough Council has now granted retrospective planning approval.

Liz Harsant, Conservative councillor for Holywells ward which covers part of the waterfront, said: "I'm absolutely thrilled about the wine rack because it's such an eyesore.

"Progress has been made and it can move ahead."

Marina Developments said it will have 149 flats and work contracts were being put out to tender.

John Howard, from Marina Developments Limited, said: "We hope to get on site within six months and finish in a couple of years."
