A good night for England then, a hollow one for Scotland. But both sides could yet make the finals in Euro 2016. See you all soon.

  2. Post update

    Scotland 1-3 England

    BBC Radio 5 live

More from Hodgson on 5 live: "I think some players will just have to wait their turn. Ross Barkley has only just come back from injury, Saido Berahino has done well for the under-21s but he's competing with people like Rickie Lambert and Theo Walcott.

"It's not just the goals with Wayne Rooney, is it? It's his workrate, his understanding of what we're trying to do, it's his influence on the field. Tonight, aside from his goals, his passing was very good, his movement was excellent, his runs into the channels were something that we'd worked on and was very, very good, and his retention of the ball was excellent despite playing against two strong central defenders. So he will be delighted with his game, but I must also mention Danny Welbeck - I thought he was equally as good.

"With those two at the moment we have an interesting duo and a potent attacking force, made even more potent when Daniel Sturridge comes back from injury."

  4. Manager reaction

    Scotland 1-3 England

    BBC Radio 5 live

England coach Roy Hodgson on 5 live Sport: "I think my team really enjoyed the atmosphere. Both sets of fans were incredible, and ours made so much noise in the game. My concentration as always is on the field of play and on there we established control and I thought there were very few periods in the game where we didn't have full control.

"That performance is right up there. There were times today when we worked high up the field and there was some really good combination and attacking play, and every time we lost the ball we won it back so quickly. There was some incredible effort there. And defensively we were very solid.

"We'll take this into the New Year and we're very happy about it, but we also know that in 18 months' time in France we'll have to be every bit as good as this, if not better.

"These players can continue working together on their game and on their play together, and we can get better, not least because so many players are so young and by France 2016 they will have so many more football matches under their belts."

  5. Back to the domestic scene

With international football packed away until the spring, focus will now turn back to the domestic game.

The big game in the Premier League this weekend sees Arsenal face Manchester United, while in Scotland Celtic host Dundee.

We will of course bring you all of the action from those games right here.

  7. Sturridge latest

    Scotland 1-3 England

Liverpool and England striker Daniel Sturridge has suffered a new injury setback in training.

The 25-year-old injured his thigh on Tuesday and is expected to have a scan on Wednesday.

Sturridge, who scored 25 times last season, has played just three Premier League games this term and only returned to full training last week.

He suffered a thigh strain while with England in September before picking up a calf strain in training in October.

Liverpool have won only four times in 14 matches without the former Chelsea and Manchester City forward and currently find themselves in 11th place.

  8. Manager reaction

    Scotland 1-3 England

    Roy Hodgson

England coach Roy Hodgson on Sky Sports: "It was certainly a good performance from the team. We have a lot of young players and we talked before the game about the atmosphere and support Scotland get here. We handled that well and I thought our fans were fantastic, and they gave a good account of themselves. Towards the end of the game I was very aware of their presence.

"Wayne Rooney is one of just a few elder players, so he is very important. I thought young Chris Smalling had a good game and James Milner was really good in the midfield, and we're getting a situation where a lot of players with not very many caps are supported by the more experienced players.

"Wayne Rooney must be pleased with his contribution, picking up his 100th cap at the weekend then leading the team to a win tonight.

"Jack Wilshere can play in a number of positions, but at the moment Jack's stepped up to the plate and is playing extremely well. He's got to be delighted with his autumn - I hope he carries that forward not only for us but for his club side Arsenal."

  9. Manager reaction

    Scotland 1-3 England

    Gordon Strachan

Scotland manager Gordon Strachan on Sky Sports: "The last year has been good to us. We got together 10 days ago after having improved as a unit throughout the year and our objective was to get three points against a good Ireland side. We got that and we're pleased, but we're disappointed to end our year with this defeat.

"A couple of factors made that the case tonight, and one was a determined and intense England side. We've got to say well done to England, a team full of Champions League players.

"We're a team a little mentally and physically tired after Ireland. We could have passed the ball better and England tested us in that department, that's for sure., We took on a terrific England side, as good as I've seen them play for a while.

"We needed 10 or 11 players to play well, but if you went into my dressing room now and asked who played well not many would put their hands up. But we got what we wanted, the three points in our group against the Republic of Ireland."

  10. Post update

    Scotland 1-3 England

Scotland manager Gordon Strachan is full of praise for England, saying 'they spooked us with their intensity.' Full reaction to come.

  12. Post update

    Scotland 1-3 England

    Former England international Danny Mills

    BBC Radio 5 live

    Nathaniel Clyne

"Nathaniel Clyne is such a good defender. Southampton have been such a good side this season and he can continue to learn. Tonight, in front of a crazy atmosphere, he performed really, really well.

"After Ikechi Anya did him for pace once very early on, Clyne's defending was immaculate and he didn't get done once more. That is the sign of a good defender."

  13. Player reaction

    Scotland 1-3 England

    Darren Fletcher

Scotland midfielder Darren Fletcher: "We are disappointed, we didn't do ourselves justice. We could have been more patient and passed it better and I think the occasion got the better of us.

"It was a derby match and we wanted to do everyone proud. We lost goals at bad times. Maybe it shows the character from England, you've got to give yourself a chance in games like this.

"We have to learn that we have a way of playing, patient football and being resilient and tough to beat. We have to get back to that but the three points against Ireland were the most important."

  14. Post update

    Scotland 1-3 England

    Former Scotland international Pat Nevin

    BBC Radio 5 live

"Three or four times players were caught slightly late in challenges. They could have rolled around and playacted, but they didn't. Tonight was a wonderful, honest advert for the game."

  15. Player reaction

    Scotland 1-3 England

England captain Wayne Rooney on Sky Sports: "It's a great victory for us tonight. We spoke about the atmosphere before the game and it was terrific. We had to show our character tonight. Scotland started quickly but we showed our ability with the ball and our mental strength. After we scored the first goal I thought we controlled the game.

"When Scotland got their goal back it could have been a bit edgy, but we responded fantastically. It was a great victory and a great performance.

"That game is great for the fans and fantastic to play in - it's not my decision but it'd be great for us to play more games like this.

"Tonight it was very special for me, to score two goals for England in Scotland at Celtic Park."

  18. Player reaction

    Scotland 1-3 England

    Rooney

England captain Wayne Rooney: "It is fantastic as a footballer to play in these games. We knew it would be a big atmosphere and to be honest we expected to win the game. We are a better team and we showed that tonight.

"The qualifiers are the important games for us but this is a massive game. Tonight is a fantastic victory against a Scotland team in good form.

"I'm enjoying my football. I've always loved playing for England, I'm on a good run of goals and I hope that continues. If that means I break the record then I'll be delighted."

Wayne Rooney has 46 goals for England, Sir Bobby Charlton has 49.

  19. Player reaction

    Scotland 1-3 England

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain speaking on ITV: "As a team going forward, it's really important we win these type of games.

    Scotland 1-3 England

    Former Scotland international Pat Nevin

    BBC Radio 5 live

"Tonight, Scotland's fans produced an atmosphere that lifted not only the Scotland team but the England fans and the England players. That's what the fans have to do at Wembley, and the players then need to reciprocate that. It's symbiotic.

"And this England team came become very, very special. I have seen something tonight. When the passion is all around the stadium these players can do it."

  21. Player reaction

    Scotland 1-3 England

  22. Jack's back

    Scotland 1-3 England

Jack Wilshere's assist for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was his first in an England shirt (in his 26th appearance). The Arsenal man's pass was top class. Does anybody - for club and country - know his best position yet though?

  23. Post update

    Scotland 1-3 England

    Former Scotland international Pat Nevin

    BBC Radio 5 live

"To be honest with you, the reason to be cheerful tonight is that this wasn't Scotland's most important game. That was at the weekend against Ireland, and we won that. Scotland matches England tonight for 25 minutes but then their tanks ran out, with too much spent against Ireland.

"So I'm not too disappointed - one or two players came in and Gordon Strachan has learned a little bit. And tonight was a wee bit of a reality check."

    Scotland 1-3 England

    Former England international Danny Mills

    BBC Radio 5 live

"Great move from Scotland. Raheem Sterling was caught napping and Robertson burst forward, played a great one-two on the edge of the box and then hit a sweet left-foot shot. Not a lot Fraser Forster could do about that.

"But then Rooney scores, and I really thought he was going to try a backflip in celebration! Thank God he didn't, because that could have ended up with a serious injury."

Scotland 1-3 England - Wayne Rooney

England react superbly and score an excellent goal! Wayne Rooney has 46 for England and celebrates with a cartwheel.

    Scotland 0-2 England

'Cheer up Gordon Strachan!' is the chant from the England fans. I wonder what Strachan will make of this performance? Spirited in the first half but never really threatening England.

He once famously brushed off a question by saying he had a yoghurt going out of date in his fridge. Has he got more pressing concerns tonight?

Derby forward Johnny Russell is on for his debut.

  42. SUBSTITUTION

    Former England international Danny Mills

    BBC Radio 5 live

    Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

"Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been superb this evening. Some strong runs and, although he has given away the ball a couple of times, if he can continue this form for Arsenal he will cement his place in this England side."

  44. CLOSE!

    Scotland 0-2 England

As I say that, England should score. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain burst clear on the right, cuts it back and James Milner and Jack Wilshere get in each other's way. Wilshere hits his shot against Milner and away.

Seconds later Raheem Sterling gets in on the left flank but his low cross is hooked out for a corner.

England seeing the game out, keeping the ball at the back and in the midfield with ease now. It's all falling very flat.

  47. Late goal drama

Toni Kroos has broken the deadlock in Vigo for Germany to give them a late goal against Spain with two minutes remaining.

Just as that's settled in the back of the net - Portugal have also taken a late lead in the first minute of stoppage time against Argentina at Old Trafford through Adrien Silva.

  48. Post update

    Scotland 0-2 England

On Friday night Scotland were all about early crosses and pressure. There's nothing of that tonight, as a long spell of possession ends up coming back inside time and again. They eventually force a corner and Steven Naismith heads over. Off balance, on the stretch.

  49. Post update

    Scotland 0-2 England

    Phil McNulty

    BBC Sport chief football writer

"There is a feel of this game running down the clock now. Substitutes being introduced at regular intervals, a resigned air among Scotland's fans and England still a threat on the break, perhaps even more now with the introduction of Liverpool's Raheem Sterling.

"If there is any consolation for Scotland here, it is that their big priority from this international break was to beat the Republic of Ireland in the pivotal Euro 2016 qualifier and that was achieved successfully."

James: Rooney now has the same goals to games ratio as Ronaldo. He is an England great.

Magnus from Glasgow: Don't delude yourself England fans. We (Scotland) are still a pretty poor side, with a Championship defence. Beating Ireland hasn't changed that. There will be many, many teams better than us at Euro 2016. We'll see how you do then.

  51. More goals in Dublin

Robbie Brady's got himself a second goal of the night and it's fair to say the result is now settled between Ireland and USA.

This time the Hull City man has found the top corner with a left-footed strike from a free kick with four minutes left to make it 4-1 in Dublin,

  52. Post update

    Scotland 0-2 England

    Former England international Danny Mills

    BBC Radio 5 live

"I'm surprised by Roy Hodgson. England have Saido Berahino and Ross Barkley on the bench. Both players could have got game time for the under-21s. Did Roy have any intention of giving them game time? It's great to be a part of the senior squad but sometimes it can do a player more good to drop him down to the youngsters."

  54. Post update

    Scotland 0-2 England

Stevie May has got an instant chant from the stands, safe to say the Scotland fans are pleased to see him on. A more physical presence up top, allowing Steven Naismith to drop back off into the hole. Scotland haven't really laid a glove on England yet - they have just over 20 minutes to climb off the canvas.

  55. Goals in Dublin

James McClean looks to have sealed victory for Ireland against USA in Dublin.

The Wigan midfielder has scored a third goal on 82 minutes for Martin O'Neill's side with a left-foot shot from outside the box.

  56. SUBSTITUTION

    Scotland 0-2 England

Whether England have raised it or Scotland have gone off the boil, I'm not sure, but all of a sudden the England midfield look the business. "Former Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster returns to familiar territory in goal and there is a notable return for Stewart Downing, having a fine season at West Ham, as he makes his first appearance for England since Hodgson's first game in charge in Norway in May 2012."

    Chris Martin

Chris Martin will be hoping to break his Scotland duck after being handed a start this evening, after coming off the bench in the win over the Republic of Ireland on Friday night.

The Derby County striker was born in Suffolk and played for England Under-19s but qualifies for Scotland because his father was born in Glasgow.

    The Don One, Scholesy Two

Before last season's meeting at Wembley the previous clash between the old enemies had been a two-legged play-off for Euro 2000.

Paul Scholes was England's hero of the hour, scoring twice in a 2-0 first-leg win at Hampden. But Don Hutchison ensured a nervy wait for Kevin Keegan and co as he forced home the winner at Wembley.

England went through 2-1 on aggregate though.

"I didn't think Gordon Strachan would have selected the same team after all the effort expended at the weekend. But he has done. His players have talked him into it - they want to play.

"There's a magnitude to this match, and players will not be able just to go through the motions tonight. There will be too much noise, too much passion, and the excitement has been ramped up over the last few days.

    Terry Butcher.

A man famous for bleeding for the cause as England captain, and a man who has managed Motherwell, Inverness Caledonian Thistle and latterly Hibernian. He understands the special passions that will be stirred by England's first international in Scotland since 1999.

He said: "There will be a huge noise and great hostility. When I played at Celtic Park in Old Firm games you couldn't hear yourself think or speak. You couldn't make yourself heard to the person five yards away.

"Make no mistake, this date will have been marked on every Scotland football fan's calendar since the day it was confirmed. Scotland and England don't do 'friendly' in football.

    "It will be manic."

    "Gascoigne...Oh brilliant! Oh yes!!"

Not my words, the words of John Motson.

Perhaps the biggest meeting of the two sides came at Wembley during the group stage of Euro 96. Scotland's Gary McAllister saw his penalty saved by David Seaman with the scores poised at 1-0, and moments later Paul Gascoigne sealed victory for England with a brilliant goal.

Darren Anderton knocked the ball down the line, Gazza flipped it over the head of Colin Hendry and crunched the ball home.

His club manager Sam Allardyce described him as the best midfielder in the Premier League on current form in October. "I don't think there is anybody playing in midfield that is better than Stewart Downing," he said.

"Scotland completed what was the main business of this international break with victory against the Republic of Ireland in a Euro 2016 here at Celtic Park on Friday - but a meeting with England in Glasgow is hardly an after-thought.

"The Scots will regard this as the perfect opportunity to confirm the growing optimism under manager Gordon Strachan at the expense of their fiercest rivals. The fact that it was before the turn of the century when England were last north of the border has only increased the sense of anticipation around the city since the job was successfully completed against the Republic."

International friendlies have a habit of being as watchable as a double bill of Last of the Summer Wine but tonight should buck the trend. Hopefully.

If Scotland play at the tempo and intensity they managed against the Republic of Ireland on Friday, then England could be in real trouble. Particularly if Roy Hodgson's men play at the speed they managed for the majority of their game on Saturday.

"This may be a friendly but the atmosphere around Celtic Park ahead of kick-off shows the relish of Scotland and their fans at welcoming back the "Auld Enemy" - with a bagpiper stationed at the main entrance of the stadium close to the statues of European Cup-winning manager Jock Stein and the legendary Celtic and Scotland winger Jimmy Johnstone.

Strachan described his side's 1-0 win over Republic of Ireland in a Euro 2016 qualifier as "like a heavyweight boxing match". England's 3-1 win over Slovenia was more of a tiddlywinks clash.

Hodgson said: "It will be competitive and hard fought. Each challenge will be well competed.

"But it won't be especially physical. Scotland aren't that type of team.

"I am hoping it will be a competitive game between two football teams. Scotland set their stall out to play football like we do."

Scotland manager Gordon Strachan revealed his players are desperate to be involved in tonight's friendly with England at Celtic Park.

In the wake of the Scots' crucial 1-0 Euro 2016 qualifying win over Ireland, on Friday, Strachan felt the intensity levels might drop among his players.

But he said: "They went into the game we put on in training and it was as intense as the first day at pre-season.

"I've got so many players wanting to play.

"Most of the coaches thought, the day before the game, they would take their foot off the pedal, but no.

But tonight, 22 men will give their all for their respective nations. Celtic Park is the lions' den.

Are Roy Hodgson's boys up for the fight?
