Leeds United 1-0 Bolton Wanderers

Stephen Warnock
Warnock's goal was his first of the campaign

Managerless Leeds picked up their second league victory of the season at the expense of winless Bolton.

Leeds parted company with head coach Dave Hockaday on Thursday, leaving Neil Redfearn in caretaker charge.

Former Wanderers loanee Stephen Warnock gave the hosts the lead when his low effort beat visiting keeper Adam Bogdan.

Joe Mason and Jay Spearing went close for Bolton, but they stayed in the Championship's bottom three.

Once more unto the breach
Neil Redfearn is now in his third spell as caretaker manager of Leeds United having previously stepped in after the departures of Simon Grayson and Neil Warnock

Leeds owner Massimo Cellino sacked Hockaday after the club's League Cup defeat at local rivals Bradford City.

The former Forest Green boss was in charge for just six games, winning two and losing four.

Wanderers have made an even slower start to the campaign and this result increased the pressure on boss Dougie Freedman, with his side having picked up just one point from their opening five games.

Bolton almost went in front when Spearing released Mason, but his powerful shot was well tipped on to the bar by Leeds keeper Marco Silvestri.

Leeds struck in the 17th minute when ex-England international Warnock latched on to Billy Sharp's pass and his firmly struck cross-shot found the bottom corner.

The visitors continued to press and Mason twice went close to levelling before the break, while Spearing's long range effort was beaten away by Silvestri after the interval.

Former Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford should have equalised, but he headed straight at the Leeds keeper in stoppage time.

Defeat left Bolton 22nd in the table, with Leeds moving up to 18th.

Leeds caretaker manager Neil Redfearn:

"I love coaching and working with players.

"The most important thing is that the appointment is right for the football club. I will have a chat with the president and see what he is thinking.

"It is his decision but the club needs a settled set of circumstances."

Bolton boss Dougie Freedman:

"I am scratching around to understand how our total domination failed to get us anything from the game.

"We dominated possession in the last hour and created so many chances.

"We came up against a keeper who played his part. Leeds showed a lot of desire to keep the ball out of their net and we didn't show enough desire to put it in theirs. When we concede a goal we have to work harder to score."
