Wales v South Africa: Liam Williams has 'learnt from mistakes'

Wales full-back Liam Williams has learnt from his mistakes, says head coach Warren Gatland.

Williams, 23, conceded the decisive penalty try as Wales lost 31-30 to South Africa in June's second Test.

The Scarlet replaces the injured George North on the wing against the Springboks on Saturday, and Gatland believes Williams has improved since his chastening experience in Nelspruit.

"That will make him stronger and better as a player," said Gatland.

"I think he's learnt from those past mistakes and experiences."

Williams apologised to his Wales team-mates after his illegal, shoulder-charge tackle on Springboks wing Cornal Hendricks which led to the penalty try in June.

He was also sent off during a Pro12 game against Cardiff Blues in April.

Such incidents have prompted Wales skills coach Rob Howley to urge Williams to exercise "emotional control".

Williams starts against South Africa as one of three changes from the Wales side which lost 34-16 to New Zealand.

"He's been playing really well, particularly at full-back," added Gatland.

"It's a chance for him to get another run-out on the wing."
