Penalty shoot-outs: Could the ‘catch-up’ rule make them fairer?
Academics say penalties shoot-outs can be as fair for each team by using a new "catch-up" rule, after research showed 60 per cent of shoot-outs were won by the team kicking first.
The rule says that if a team misses they take the first penalty of the next round: currently Team A takes first, followed by Team B – but using the catch-up rule if Team B missed they would kick first in the following round.
Mehmet Ismail, from the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands, said using the rule would negate any perceived psychological advantage for the team that kicks first, giving an equal chance to both.
