With the weather being somewhere in between winter and spring, it's still a little chilly to be thinking about picnics in the park just yet, so you may well be considering a trip to the cinema this weekend.

Fortunately there are plenty of major new releases coming out today:

First up is 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Is it a sequel to Cloverfield? Or a spin-off? Neither, by the sounds of it. Producer JJ Abrams has described it as a "blood relative" of the 2008 film. Which we think means that it's not the same characters or a development of the plotline, but it is set in the same 'universe' as its predecessor.

What's it actually about though? Glad you asked. Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays a character called Michelle who, after surviving a car accident, wakes up to find herself in an underground bunker with two men. Howard (John Goodman) tells her that a massive chemical attack has rendered the air unbreathable, and their only hope of survival is to remain inside. But is he telling the truth?  

(It looks pretty scary, to be honest, so be prepared to hide behind your popcorn.)

Next up is High Rise. The big-screen adaption of the famous JG Ballard novel is about a doctor (played by 'man of the moment' Tom Hiddleston) who moves into a London skyscraper where rising tensions and class warfare lead to anarchy.

As luck would have it, we recently interviewed the film's stars, Sienna Miller and Ben Wheatley, about the film. You can watch it here.

And then there's Risen, starring Joseph Fiennes (pictured).

He plays Roman military tribune Clavius, a character who remains set in his ways after serving 25 years in the army. He arrives at a crossroads when he's tasked to investigate the mystery of what happened to Jesus (Cliff Curtis) following the Crucifixion. You can watch the trailer, external on YouTube.

It's fair to say that none of the major films released this week sound like a barrel of laughs, but fans of psychological thrillers, in particular, should be happy.

However, if you fancy something a little less mainstream, there is of course Marguerite, which follows a wealthy woman (played by Catherine Frot) who follows her passion to sing in front of audiences.

There's just one problem: No-one tells her how bad she is. (Something we've seen happen in real life many times with talent show contestants before they make it on to TV.)

Victoria Beckham launched her first shop outside Britain earlier today.

The former Spice Girl's store in Hong Kong lies in the upmarket Central district, amid a cluster of high-end brands and five-star hotels. 

Crowds of fans waited outside, before Victoria emerged in a fitted black turtleneck dress.

Madonna is in the news again after the singer accidentally exposed a fan’s breast on stage.

Madonna was performing in Brisbane on Thursday evening as part of her long-running Rebel Heart tour, which finishes this week, when she invited a fan on stage.

In video footage, the singer is seen tugging on the woman’s top, which came down, exposing her to the audience.

But the woman in question, 17-year-old Josephine Georgiou, has since told the Courier Mail, external: "Only I get to decide if I’m humiliated or not – why would people assume I am humiliated by my own breast, nipple or body? I didn’t realise my boob was such a big deal - it was nothing to me."

The funeral of Coronation Street creator and writer Tony Warren has taken place at Manchester Cathedral.

Warren, 79, who started the Granada Television show when he was 24, died on 1 March after a short illness.

Cast members Alan Halsall, Mikey North and Ryan Thomas carried the coffin into Manchester Cathedral (pictured), watched by the crowds outside.

Major Lazer - the globe-spanning supergroup who scored a major hit last year with the club track Lean On, external - have flung open the door to their vault and offered their fans a brand new song.

True to form, Number One is an absolute racket - combining a lilting reggae groove with some rib-rattling bass parps. But it's sure to go down a storm at their live shows, with a call-and-response vocal hook that tips its hat to Arrested Development's Everyday People.

You know what it's like.

There's a movie that comes out that you want to see, but you keep putting it off because you're so busy, and before you know it's vanished from the cinema.

Then you have to wait ages before it's broadcast on a channel you don't have, and then wait for it to be released on DVD and Blu-Ray, and then maybe, if you're lucky, it eventually reaches on-demand services.

Well - the many middle men of that path have just been cut out of that process for new film The Little Prince. an animated movie based on the 1943 book by Antoine de Saint-Exupery.

It has one heck of a cast list - with Jeff Bridges, Rachel McAdams (pictured), Paul Rudd, Marion Cotillard and James Franco all providing voices.

It had been slated for release on 18 March - but now instead of hitting the cinemas, it's going straight to Netflix.

'Straight-to-DVD' movies in the past have traditionally been a signal that the film in question is less-than-amazing, but these days it's all change. In the new age of streaming services, it's likely we could we see a lot more films being released this way.

Michael Ball is to take over BBC Radio 2's Sunday morning slot, following the death of Sir Terry Wogan.

Weekend Wogan, which ran every Sunday from 11:00-13:00, will now be replaced by The Michael Ball Show.

Ball said he had "learned so much" from "friend and mentor" Sir Terry, who died in January aged 77.

The station also announced Claudia Winkleman will leave the Arts Show to front a new Sunday night slot and Craig Charles will host a Saturday funk show.

Last year, Sony music pulled all of its tracks off streaming website Soundcloud, prompting outrage from artists like Madeon.

But the label's dispute with Soundcloud appears to be over - as industry website Music Business Worldwide reports, external that Sony has bought an equity stake in the company.

It paves the way for the German-based company to launch a music subscription service similar to Spotify, Deezer, Tidal and Apple Music.

However, Soundcloud and Sony have so far refused to confirm the deal, with the former telling the BBC: "We do not comment on rumours".

Jeremy Irons is trending on Twitter - after he uttered a very rude word on Chris Evan's Breakfast Show on Radio 2 this morning. Profuse apologies followed on air, from Chris, Jeremy et al.

David Tennant is to star alongside Sir Ian McKellen in a new radio adaptation of Look Back in Anger.

John Osborne's provocative 1956 play will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 next month, 60 years after it made its debut.

The station has also announced a forthcoming drama based on Jack Monroe's A Boy Called Jack, starring Jaime Winstone as Monroe.

Also on Radio 4, Lenny Henry will front a Rogue's Gallery of genre-bending monologues - each with a sting in the tail.

Over the years, BBC Introducing has helped launch the careers of acts like The 1975, Florence + The Machine, George Ezra, Rizzle Kicks and MGMT - so it's worth paying attention when they champion new bands.

Earlier this week, the strand brought five brand new acts to the SXSW festival for a showcase of new British talent - and you can watch their performances over on the BBC Music site.

Highlights included Cardiff rock band Estrons and singer-songwriter Frances, who has been called "the next Adele".

I've learned over the years not to have high expectations when meeting a pop star. That way, anything more than, "I just make music for myself and if other people like it, that's a bonus" counts as a good interview.

But Selena Gomez surpassed my expectations. Despite having had three hours sleep, she was funny, thoughtful, engaging and candid throughout our 20-minute encounter. That's not something you expect from a former Disney star.

We talked about sexism and sleaze in the music industry; how she used music as a crutch during a "chaotic" year of illness and break-ups; and what it's like to give birth on film.

Following the lead of supermarket rival Tesco, Sainsbury's has announced it will start stocking vinyl albums in a selection of its stores.

That means you can buy Adele's 25 with your spuds and sausages. And if you don't like it, you can melt it down and turn it into a fruit bowl. Everybody wins.

Vinyl will come to 171 stores from next Monday, and the chain's head of music, Peter Selby, says it's here to stay.

"We don’t see this as a novelty gifting fad but a complimentary part of our existing music offer with a long term future."

Although they make up a tiny percentage of the overall music market, vinyl sales have been increasing for several years (demand increased by 60% in 2015). And non-traditional retailers - including Argos, WH Smith, Urban Outfitters and supermarket chains - now sell more music than HMV.

Prepare yourself for some epic late-90s boyband news.

Former members of the Backstreet Boys, N Sync, O-Town and 98 Degrees have clubbed together to star in a new film about zombies.

Dead 7, an original movie for the Syfy channel, stars BSB's Nick Carter (pictured) as a gunslinging hero in a post-apocalyptic, zombie-infested Wild West.

He is joined by a crew of ex-boybanders on his zombie-slaying quest.

"Where can I see a trailer for this early contender for the 2017 best picture Oscar?" we hear you ask.

Planned industrial action by the English National Opera chorus, which was due to take place tonight, has been called off - after a pay dispute was resolved.

Last month, the chorus said it would refuse to sing in the first act of tonight's performance of the Philip Glass opera Akhnaten, which is currently playing at the London Coliseum.

The action was called off earlier this week, and a settlement between the ENO and the chorus has since been reached.

In February, 42 out of the company's 44-strong chorus voted to strike over a dispute with the company about pay and jobs.

In a statement on Friday, ENO's chief executive Cressida Pollock said the two parties had reached "a fair compromise".

You may not have heard of Nina Gold.

However, the chances are you probably have heard of Game of Thrones, Wolf Hall, London Spy, The King’s Speech, The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything and Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.

If you're a fan of any of those films and TV shows, then you're also unwittingly a fan of Nina Gold, who was responsible for casting them.  

Gold is a behind-the-scenes veteran of the industry and one of the first people directors enlist to help them pick the perfect actor for a part.

Now she's been announced as the recipient of a Bafta special award, which "recognises Gold’s outstanding contribution to casting across over 100 television and film productions".

She will be honoured at this year’s British Academy Television Craft Awards on Sunday 24 April at The Brewery, London.
