'A time for solidarity': Archbishops' support for victims of Orlando shooting

The Archbishops of York and Canterbury have issued a joint statement following the mass shooting in Orlando. They say it's time for "solidarity".
Omar Mateen killed 49 people and wounded 53 more during the gun attack on a gay club - the worst mass shooting in modern American history.

The statement, by Doctor John Sentamu and Justin Welby, says Christians must speak out in support of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex people, who have become "brutally targeted by the forces of evil".

Starry, starry night: Yorkshire Dales National Park stars in 'sky at night' league

The Yorkshire Dales National Park is one of the darkest in England when it comes to night skies.
This fantastic pic of the sky above the Ribblehead Viaduct seems to back up today's findings too.

According to the "Night Blight" maps, 98% of the skies in the Yorkshire Dales National Park are in the darkest two categories.

North Yorkshire's weather: A cloudy afternoon with some showers
I love it and so was thrilled today to visit North Yorkshire wildlife artist Robert E Fuller before his appearance on the programme this evening.
Robert's filmed some unique footage of weasels in their natural habitat at his home in Thixendale where I met a tiny weasel called Fidget.

Fancy living in Hedgehog Close or Swan Way? Well, thanks to some North Yorkshire pupils, now you can.
Thirsk schoolchildren have come up with new street names by thinking about local history and the area around them for the latest phase of a new housing development in the town.
Other names suggested by the schoolchildren included Butterfly Close, Honeysuckle Way, Poppy Drive and Rosemary Close.

City of York Council is proposing a blitz on tippers who disfigure the city and surrounding countryside.
'I wouldn't have missed it for the world' - Celebrating the Queen's 90th
Robert and his weasels star on BBC Springwatch tonight and tomorrow from 20:00.
The Springwatch team filmed Robert as he patrolled different wildlife areas in his garden which hosts wild stoats, weasels, barn owls, kestrels and tawny owls.
But his rare footage of weasels, believed to be the only video of its kind, will headline the episode.

University of York helps to create UK's first 'air quality' garden

Scientists at the University of York are helping plant the UK's first air quality garden.
The garden, at Sheffield's Botanical Gardens, aims to visually demonstrate the effects of air pollution on plants and the potential impact on human health.

Doctor Maria Val-Martin is the University of Sheffield researcher in charge of the project.
She tells me visitors might spot "yellow pigments on the plants leaves and then might be able to recognise what air pollution does to the plants".

Ex-MP Matthew Parris says there has been "scaremongering" by both sides ahead of the EU referendum.
He said he was "uncomfortable" with Leave supporters conjuring up "millions of Turks coming here" and with the Remain side inventing "a nightmare of things being cut".
Fire crews damp down after major blaze in Harrogate
Fire crews are damping down at the scene of a major fire in Harrogate overnight.
At its height, a total of 12 crews tackled the blaze at a derelict building on Cornwall Road which broke out at about 23:45 on Sunday.
Crews from Harrogate, Knaresborough, Boroughbridge, Ripon, Summerbridge, Northallerton, Huntington, Tadcaster, Acomb and two from West Yorkshire were involved.
Investigations into the cause of the fire have not yet started but are due to begin later today, according to North Yorkshire Fire Service.
Balloon commemoration at York Pride for victims of Orlando attack
The scheme is one of the largest ever at a FTSE 100 company outside banking.
The biggest beneficiary will be chief executive Jeff Fairburn, who could earn more than £100m.
Mike Fox, from Royal London Asset Management, says the payments are too high "in all circumstances" and calls on the board to show restraint in the light of the housing crisis and government support for the housebuilding industry.

Detailed satellite maps of England’s light pollution and dark skies, released today by the Campaign to Protect Rural England, show the National Park is ranked as the third darkest behind Northumberland and Exmoor.

"It's wonderful, absolutely wonderful!"
That's how Barbara Weatherill, a World War Two veteran from Selby, described this weekend's picnic on The Mall to mark the Queen's official 90th birthday.
Barbara was among 10,000 guests who attended the somewhat rainy picnic - the last of the events for the Queen's official birthday.
The Queen is the patron of more than 600 charities and organisations, and many of the guests taking part were from her charities.
Barbara has told BBC Radio York: "There won't be another event like this - possibly for many years. I wouldn't have missed it for the world."

Balloon commemoration at York Pride for victims of Orlando attack
A balloon will be released at this weekend's York Pride for each victim of the Orlando shootings, which saw 50 people killed in a gay nightclub in the US city on Sunday.
Omar Mateen killed 50 people and wounded 53 more in the deadliest mass shooting in recent US history, before being shot dead by police.
Greg Stephenson, from York Pride, says: "It was Pride Weekend over there and they'd gone out to enjoy themselves and ended up dead.
"Words can't describe how much an impact it's had on myself and the rest of the LGBT community."
A minute's silence will also be held at the York Pride Parade, which leaves from outside York Minster at about 11:45 on Saturday.

The coastguard's warning people in North Yorkshire not to risk their lives this summer just to take a picture.
It comes after several cases of people falling from cliffs which have crumbled as they try to take a photo.
Leah Price was 15 when she slipped and fell 250ft down cliffs in Filey while trying to take a selfie. Happily, she survived the plunge.
Making a trunk call: Firefighters re-'moo'-ve cow stuck in tree

A cow with its head stuck in a tree has been freed by firefighters in North Yorkshire.
Crews were called to a field in Northallerton yesterday and attempted to rescue the animal using farm machinery.
When that failed it was sedated and then eventually freed using a circular saw.
After the bovine rescue, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service tweeted: "A happy ending for all".
