  3. Search is on for 'forever homes' for 10 Rotherham babies

    Babies don't come up for adoption often these days, but, in a rare coincidence, Rotherham Council currently has 10 young babies in its care all looking for loving homes.

    Ranging from new-born through to several months old, the youngsters are all desperately in need of people to come forward to adopt them.

    Anyone who thinks they can help is being asked to contact the adoption team on 01709 254899 or visit adoptioninrotherham.org.uk.

  4. Watch: Dog microchipping becomes compulsory from today

    A reminder to South Yorkshire's dog owners: you could be fined if your pet is not microchipped, after a new law came into force today.

    More than one million dogs in the UK have not yet been microchipped, one in eight of the estimated canine population, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs says.

    If local authorities find a dog that hasn't been chipped, owners will have 21 days to comply with the law or face a fine of up to £500. You have been warned!

  5. Sheffield Council told to 'stop dithering' over new Retail Quarter

    The leader of the Lib Dem group on Sheffield City Council has criticised the Labour-run authority for "dithering" over the new Retail Quarter.

    Colin Ross made his comments as the 3 St. Paul's development, the final part of the Heart of the City project, was completed.

    Mr Ross says the development "which was helped by funding from the coalition government, is a great step forward". 

    However, he adds that Labour in Sheffield needs to do more for the city centre.

  7. Police issue e-fit following Firth Park robbery

    An e-fit image of a man wanted in connection with a robbery in the Firth Park area of Sheffield earlier this year has just been issued by police.

    A woman in her 60s was walking onto Foremark Road on Tuesday 19 January when she was approached by a man who attempted to take her bag. 

    He assaulted her before taking her bag and running off down Sicey Avenue.

    The suspect is described as being of average build and wearing a black beanie style hat, a khaki padded jacket and light coloured trousers.

  8. Sale of Tata Steel in UK will formally go ahead next week

    The sale of Tata Steel's UK operations will formally go ahead on Monday

    Business Secretary Savid Javid (pictured left) has met the chairman of the firm in India, with thousands of jobs under threat, including about 2,000 in South Yorkshire.

  9. Final part of Heart of the City project completed in Sheffield

    The final part of the £130m Heart of the City project in Sheffield has been completed.

    The 10-storey development, 3 St Paul's Place, marks the "revival of confidence" in Sheffield city centre, according to Manchester-based developers CTP.

    Councillor Leigh Bramall, deputy leader of Sheffield City Council and cabinet member for business, skills and development, says: "It's immensely satisfying to see 3 St Paul's Place, which began in the worst recession since the Second World War, now taking its place in the city skyscape."

    The first occupiers, engineering consultancy Arup, are due to move in shortly.

  10. Rotherham boss Warnock criticises Bristol City's Lee Johnson

    Rotherham boss Neil Warnock has called pre-match comments made by Bristol City counterpart Lee Johnson "an absolute disgrace" after the teams drew 1-1.

    The Championship strugglers met at Ashton Gate on Tuesday.

    Before the game Johnson, 34, told the Bristol Post: "We have to make sure we win it, whether through aggression, good football or intimidation."

    Warnock told BBC Radio Sheffield: "I didn't have to do a team talk, Johnson did it for me yesterday."

  11. Three men jailed for Sheffield 'cold-blooded' shooting death

    Three men who shot dead a father-of-two "in cold-blood" have been jailed.

    Marvis Smith, Brendan McFarlane and Stevin Pierre

    Grant Bodell, 23, was discovered with gunshot wounds on wasteland off Queen Mary Road, in Sheffield, in June 2014. He died later in hospital. 

    At Sheffield Crown Court, Marvis Smith (pictured left) and Brendan McFarlane (pictured centre) were jailed for life after they were found guilty of murder following a trial in February

    Stevin Pierre (pictured right), 25, of Water Slacks Close, Sheffield, was jailed for 16 years for manslaughter.

    Smith, 30, of Park Grange Road, was ordered to serve a minimum of 38 years while McFarlane, 22, of Hyde Park Terrace, must serve 32 years before being considered for release.

  12. Grand total revealed for Harry and Paul's three-legged Sport Relief challenge

    The grand total for Harry Gration and Paul Hudson's three-legged challenge for Sport Relief has been revealed. 

    The Look North presenters walked 131 miles across Yorkshire with their ankles tied together last month. 

    They raised £277,000 for charity. Harry says it's an amazing total…

  13. 'Distinctive' rings and bangles stolen in Rotherham

    The theft of high value jewellery from a house in Brinsworth, Rotherham, has sparked a police appeal for information.

    The jewellery, which is described as "of highly sentimental value to the owner", was stolen from a house on Godric Drive between 19:00 and 21:15 on Thursday 17 March.

    PC Tom Jordan says: "I would ask people to keep an eye out for anyone who may be selling these distinctive items. Two gold rings and six gold bangles were taken from the property."

  14. Hillsborough inquests jury retires: Hearings longest in legal history

    More on the news that the jury in the Hillsborough inquests have retired to consider their verdicts.

    The hearings are the longest running inquests in British legal history.

    Since the inquests began on 31 March 2014, the jury has heard from more than 500 witnesses, been shown more than 4,000 documents and watched footage from the day of the disaster.

    The coroner, Sir John Goldring (pictured), began his summing up on 25 January and has been speaking to the jury for 25 days in total.  

  15. Hillsborough inquests: Jury to consider if victims 'unlawfully killed'

    The jury at the Hillsborough inquests into the deaths of 96 Liverpool fans has been sent out to start deliberating after hearing two years of evidence.

    The seven women and three men will respond to a 14-section questionnaire on how the supporters died.

    One question asks if the fans were unlawfully killed in the 1989 disaster.

    Jurors will also decide if fans' behaviour added to a dangerous situation outside the stadium in Sheffield.

    Liverpool had been due to play Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup semi-final on 15 April 1989.

  16. BreakingJury at Hillsborough inquests retires to consider verdicts

    The jury at the Hillsborough inquests has been sent out to start its deliberations after listening to evidence for more than two years. 

    Ninety-six Liverpool fans died as a result of a crush on the terraces at the Sheffield ground in 1989. 

    The jury will have to decide whether they were unlawfully killed. 

  17. 'Grandad Fox' statue takes pride of place in Stocksbridge

    A new sculpture designed by Sheffield artist Pete McKee and made by Anthony Bennett has been gingerly lowered into place next to the new Fox Valley development in Stocksbridge.

    Standing at 6ft 4ins tall and weighing a tonne, the sculpture - called Grandad Fox - is the first time ever that one of Pete's images has been made in bronze.
