Wildlife 'legend' guest of honour as Yorkshire Wildlife Trust marks 70 years

It's a big day today for the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust as it celebrates its 70th birthday.
The Trust is celebrating at the University of York later, where the guest speaker is non other than Sir David Attenborough.

Jonathan Leadly, from the Trust, is due to meet Sir David off the train.
He says: "It's an honour and a privilege to have Sir David as a guest."

Two-year-old girl critical after being hit by car in Whitby
She was struck by a black 4x4 vehicle on Lockton Road at about 18:15 last night, police say.
She's being treated at James Cook hospital in Middlesbrough.
Officers are asking for anyone who was in the area to contact them.

The organiser of the run is Professor Norman Maitland, from the Yorkshire Cancer Research Centre at the University of York.

Traffic and travel update: Problems on the A59 and the A170

We're getting reports of very slow traffic on the A59 York Road, eastbound in Moor Monkton, between Skip Bridge and the Marston Lane junction.
We're also told there's queuing traffic, due to a broken down lorry on the A170 at Ruston between Town end and Wyekham Lane.
Cars from York and Scarborough join aid convoy to 'Jungle' camp in Calais

Organisers of a huge aid convoy to France say it will go ahead, even though it's been banned by French border police in Dover.
About 250 vehicles are due to leave for Calais tonight, including six from York and two from Scarborough.

The contingent from York, organised by York Stand Up To Racism, is heading for the "Jungle" refugee camp in Calais.
Participants say they've raised £1,300 so far which will be donated to Care4Calais:

Yorkshire County Cricket Club to pay tribute to Jo Cox MP
Yorkshire County Cricket Club will pay tribute to Jo Cox MP at Headingley tonight following her death.

Ahead of tonight’s NatWest T20 Blast match against Nottinghamshire, players, officials, members and spectators will join together and remember Mrs Cox by observing a minute’s silence.
The players will also wear black armbands during tonight’s match.
Mark Arthur, Yorkshire County Cricket Club Chief Executive, has paid his own tribute to the MP:

Other employees who were in the mine at the time were safely evacuated, a spokesman said.
York Central MP Rachael Maskell's tribute to Jo Cox

The York Central MP, Labour's Rachael Maskell, has paid tribute to fellow MP Jo Cox, who died yesterday after being stabbed and shot in West Yorkshire.
Speaking to BBC Radio York she described the events as a tragedy and described her as "a wonderful person."

No explosion at Boulby mine

The owners of Boulby mine have clarified there was no explosion in the accident this morning in which a man died.
ICL UK said there was a "sudden and powerful release of gas" in the early hours.
They added there was "no fire and no heat".
No further details have been released as yet about the man who died.

Looking around, there is absolutely no activity here at the moment - smoke is still coming out of the chimney and it looks like it's business as usual.

The man who died in an underground incident at a potash mine near whitby this morning has been named as John Anderson.
Mr Anderson died following a "sudden and powerful release of gas" in the early hours, the firm said.
