To mark Liverpool's first home game since the inquests into the Hillsborough disaster concluded, the match programme for tonight's Europa League semi-final against Villarreal has '96' on the front cover in tribute to those who died.

Britain's Will Bayley and Rob Davies have both claimed gold in the singles events at the Slovenia Open as they continue their build-up to the Rio Paralympics.

Bayley beat world number two Maksym Nikolenko 3-1 in the decider while Davies defeated compatriot Paul Davies 3-1 with the latter making his comeback after almost two years out injured.

In tonight's other semi-final, defending champions Sevilla welcome Shaktar, with the La Liga side holding a slender advantage from the first leg.

Kevin Gameiro's late penalty earned four-time champions Sevilla a 2-2 draw in Ukraine last week.

Those away goals mean a goalless draw will be enough for Sevilla to progress.

"We're expecting the best Shakhtar there is," said Sevilla coach Unai Emery.

"They won the tournament in 2009 and they're used to winning their league. It is a big ask - they'll be 90 tough minutes and we need to be ready for it."

Villarreal have a fully-fit squad to choose from, with defender Eric Bailly and forward Leo Baptistao recovered from injuries.

"We come here full of hope," said Villarreal manager Marcelino. "We are going to give everything we have got and enjoy ourselves. We feel we have the capabilities to make it through to the final."

Three years after being promoted back to La Liga, Villarreal have reached a European semi-final for the fourth time, but have never made it to a final.

In contrast, Liverpool have won five European Cups and lifted the Uefa Cup three times before it was rebranded as the Europa League.

Liverpool will know they’ll have to be careful tonight – no away goal means a goal for Villarreal will make life tricky. 

But as Jurgen Klopp said after the first leg, it’s only half-time, and we’ve all seen what can happen at Anfield – just ask St Etienne, Auxerre, Olympiakos, and of course more recently Borussia Dortmund. 

In fact I remember St Etienne coming to Anfield with a one-goal lead in 1977, and within two minutes Kevin Keegan had levelled the tie. Even then the French side scored and Liverpool still found two more. The problem for Liverpool fans is that they rarely do it the easy way – never 3-0 up at half-time – always last few minutes, stoppage time. Always better that way though!

Liverpool midfielder Emre Can will return to the Reds squad for the Europa League semi-final second leg against Villarreal at Anfield.

The Germany international, 22, has missed the past five matches after injuring an ankle in the quarter-final win over Dortmund.

England striker Daniel Sturridge is pushing for a start.

Liverpool must overturn a 1-0 deficit to reach their first European final in almost a decade.

The Reds, who lost to AC Milan in the 2007 Champions League final, are attempting to win silverware in Jurgen Klopp's first season as manager.

Jamie Murray's five-week run as the world's number one doubles player will come to an end on Monday.

He and Bruno Soares were beaten in straight sets by Henri Kontinen and Murray's former partner John Peers in the second round of the Madrid Open.

Is Anfield set for another classic European night?

After scoring three times in the final 25 minutes against Borussia Dortmund in the previous round, Liverpool will again have to overturn a deficit if they are to progress to the final.

Villarreal bring a 1-0 lead to Merseyside for the semi-final second leg thanks to substitute Adrian Lopez's injury-time goal a week ago in Spain.

The winners will face either Spanish holders Sevilla or Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk, who drew 2-2 in their first leg, in the Swiss city of Basel on 18 May.

Fairly obvious Louis van Gaal wasn't going to respond kindly to any questions about his future but was wary of getting them anyway.

Interestingly on the three-match bans for Robert Huth and Marouane Fellaini, Van Gaal noted if the first offence (hair pulling) had been seen, United would have had a penalty.

Could have been crucial in the battle for a top-four place.

Louis van Gaal on facing Norwich, who are in the bottom three: "It is always difficult to fight against a team that fights for maintaining their position in the Premier League. But that is no excuse. We have to cope with that. They have won at Old Trafford so we shall have to take revenge. It will be a tough game but we have to win."

Manchester United had been top of the Premier League in November, but in December they were knocked out of the Champions League and then suffered a number of damaging league defeats to Stoke, Bournemouth and Norwich.

Louis van Gaal: "When you see what we have done against top five, what we have done against bottom five is not a good average. Month of December caused us big damage. We have our his own reasons for that because of injuries. You have to cope with that. When it is so much in the same positions it is hard.

"I always talk about facts, not hypothetical circumstances and activities. I can only say at the end of November we were first position. Then we had the injuries. What would have happened you can never tell. Leicester are the champions. I have great respect for them and they deserve the championship."

Louis van Gaal has reacted to Marouane Fellaini being banned by the FA for three games for violent conduct. Fellaini elbowed Leicester's Robert Huth, who received the same ban for pulling the Belgian's hair.

He said: "We don't have appeal. I said already that the reaction of Fellaini was a human one. When the FA gives Huth a suspension of three matches, then they admit it was a penalty.

"For us it is very disappointing that the referee did not see that fact. I still believe Fellaini reacts like a human. He has to control himself better that is true. But when you stick someone by the hair this shall always exist."
