More on the news that a two-year-old girl's died after being hit by a black 4x4 in Whitby last week.

Anyone who was in the Lockton Road or Fyling Road area of the town and who may have witnessed the child or the car before the incident is being asked to contact police.

The girl was wearing pink and purple trousers and a white coat with pink and purple flowers and an insect print. 

Officers are continuing patrols in the area "to gather any further information about the incident and provide reassurance to local residents", police say.

A series of photos of the York Carriageworks in The Press a couple of weeks ago prompted former coachbuilder Gordon Smith to come forward.

Gordon, now 70, worked at the Carriageworks for 35 years, from leaving school at the age of 15 up to the day the works closed, when he was 50.

There's heavy traffic and delays are expected on the A19 in both directions in Selby between the A63 junction and the Fox Hill Lane junction due to roadworks.

Any rain will clear this afternoon, leaving most places dry and turning brighter with sunny spells later. 

The top temperature will be about 20C (68F) with a light westerly wind.

A woman in her 40s was slashed with a knife in an attack in York's Rowntree Park on Saturday afternoon.

The victim was walking by herself near the corner of the skate park on the footpath heading towards Millennium Bridge when she was approached from behind by a man riding a cycle.

Officers believe the man was trying to cut the strap off her bag, but missed and slashed her arm with a knife, causing a 2cm cut. 

The suspect was slim with well-groomed, short, dark brown hair and wearing a black jumper. He was riding a grey or silver mountain bike and rode off towards Millennium Bridge.

The park was very busy at the time of the incident and officers would like to hear from anyone who was there between 16:45 and 17:20 on Saturday.

This was the first British LGBT Pride since the Orlando shootings at a gay club. Proceedings began with a public prayer outside York Minster and a minute’s silence.  

A two-year-old girl who was hit by a 4x4 vehicle in Whitby last week has died, police have confirmed.

Emergency crews were called to the scene on Lockton Road at about 18:15 on Thursday.

The victim was taken to James Cook Hospital in Middlesborough in a critical condition, but she died the day after from her injuries.

North Yorkshire Police say: "Specially trained officers are continuing to provide support to the child's family at this very distressing time."

The mayor of York's twin city in Germany has written to York's Lord Mayor urging Britain to stay in the EU.

The letter congratulates Councillor Dave Taylor on becoming York's new Lord Mayor and invites him to Germany - but it also includes a message about Thursday's referendum.

Markus Lewe says he's "concerned" about the idea of "Brexit", saying he believes "very strongly" in what the EU has achieved. 

Mr Lewe has told BBC Radio York he's concerned about the prospect of the UK voting to leave in the referendum on Thursday.

Four North Yorkshire police officers have been nominated for a national bravery award for their courage in disarming a violent teenager who had just killed his friend.

PCs Steven Harvey, Martin Scott, Dave Ellison and Alex Gregory, had to deal with Sam Donley, 19, who stabbed his friend Liam Miller to death and attacked a passer-by outside his home in Hamilton Drive West, York, last July after experimenting with a hallucinogenic drug.

As the officers approached the front door of the property, they found Mr Donley still brandishing the knife. and using it to stab himself while fighting furiously.

MPs are due to make an emotional return to Parliament later to pay tribute to West Yorkshire Labour MP Jo Cox, who was killed last week in the centre of Birstall near Leeds.

The North Yorkshire Conservative MP Nigel Adams has told BBC Radio York Mrs Cox was a "lovely person" and he's been left "horrified" by her death.

Thomas Mair, who is accused of killing Mrs Cox, is due to appear in court in London later.

MPs are due to make an emotional return to Parliament later to pay tribute to their colleague, the Yorkshire Labour MP Jo Cox, who was killed last week in Birstall. 

Tributes have been paid to the MP throughout the weekend, including at Headingley Cricket ground and at St Peter's Church in Birstall.

The Reverend Paul Knight conducted one of the services in the town and paid tribute to Bernard Kenny, the 77-year-old man who attempted to stop the attack. 

Mr Kenny is still recovering in hospital from a stab wound.  

An online appeal set up in Jo Cox's name on Friday has so far raised more than £800,000.

It'll be a rather cloudy start to the day across Yorkshire with plenty of sunny spells by the time we get to this afternoon.
