Oxfordshire Live: Didcot demolition update; NHS and care savings; rail campaign

New signs to help direct cyclists along quieter roads in Oxford are being installed.

Costing £23,000, the city council is placing the signs between Oxford and Blackbird Leys, along roads in East Oxford and Cowley, as an alternative to the busy Iffley Road and Cowley Road.

Cherwell District Council said it will pick up the bill for extra grass cutting across Bicester, Banbury and Kidlington again this year.

An Oxford University zoologist has been honoured by the RSPCA for improving welfare for laboratory rats.

Dr Manuel Berdoy won the Sir Patrick Moore Award, for his work to reduce the numbers of animals used in experiments through better design and analysis.

His work helped challenge the assumption that lab rodents can be kept in barren housing because they do not know any different.

But the Wantage MP has criticised RWE NPower for its communication with the families of three men buried under the rubble.

There have been 151 sexual crimes against children online reported in the Thames Valley in the last year, according to the NSPCC.

The figures come after police were required to flag any sexual crime against a child that involved the internet. 

Crimes in Thames Valley include sexual grooming, inciting children to take part in a sex act and causing a child to watch a sex act. 

Four of the victims were under 10 years old.

A buzzard which survived 12 hours stuck in a van grill is recovering at a Cotswold wildlife reserve. 

It was rescued by staff at a Swindon van hire business before being treated by vets for a dislocated leg. 

It's been named Ceri and is recovering well.

An update on the recovery work at Didcot power station.

The county council says today Oxfordshire Fire & Rescue Service spent £300,000 dealing with the partial collapse of the boiler house in February.

The figure is lower than expected as some of the costs have been covered by other local authorities.  

RWE NPower said using Remote Operated Vehicles (ROVs) to place demolition charges at the site was its "preferred route, with the traditional method being prepared as a back-up, should the robotic option not prove reliable".

It added: "We understand that the time taken to recover the families’ loved ones is deeply upsetting.... our priority remains the recovery of the missing men and we are doing everything that is within our power to ensure it is progressed as fast and safely as possible."

Four workers died when the boiler house at the Didcot A plant partially collapsed on 23 February.  

Better rail links are needed across Oxfordshire if the county is to grow, according to campaigners who want to see more carriages to carry passengers between Didcot and Oxford.

The county council has drawn up a list of improvements - including a new service to Heathrow Airport - that will be taken to the rail industry.

Engine-revving drivers were threatened with having their cars seized after plaguing villagers in Wootton.
