  2. 'We bonded over feminism and dry white wine' - Mariella Frostrup

    One of several events taking place across the country and around the globe was held in Trafalgar Square, London, where people used the inclusivity theme of the late MP's maiden speech in the Commons to remember Mrs Cox.

    Those on the stage were greeted by a sea of placards, many carrying the slogan #LoveLikeJo and #MoreInCommon, while others were simply colour portraits of the smiling MP. 

    Hosting the event, Mrs Cox's friend and television presenter Mariella Frostrup said the pair bonded over mutual passions including "feminism and dry white wine".

    Crowds gathered by Ha'penny Bridge in Dublin to remember MP Jo Cox.

    Jamie Drummond, who along with Bono co-founded poverty foundation One, was a friend of Mrs Cox's since her days working with aid agencies.

    He said: "Jo stood for the best, whether as an activist on the outside or as an activist on the inside when she joined parliament."

    At Portobello Beach in Edinburgh, friends of Ms Cox gathered to celebrate her life. Her photo was placed on the sand next to 300 candles arranged into the words 'More In Common'.

    Kim Wallace, a friend and former colleague of Ms Cox and her husband, said: "Jo was fearless in standing up for her beliefs and was a force for good, bringing people together."

    Crowds also gathered outside the Unicef building in New York to remember Jo. 

    David Miliband, head of humanitarian relief agency International Rescue Committee addressed the crowds.

    He said: "I want to not dwell on the lessons of her death but of her life. Jo broke all the rules. She was from a small town yet she broke out, but her soul never left home."

    "She was a pioneer for a different kind of politics and, as a woman in politics, Jo showed how politics should be done."

    The silence when it came was total and heartfelt, save for the cries of a babe and the bark of a faraway dog.

    The smell of flowers piled up in front of Batley town hall drifted across the hushed crowd of all faiths and none, those who knew her and those that wished they had.

    Once the feed on the big screen from London had finished the mood picked up, a school choir belted out "Ain't no mountain high enough" and the crowd clapped along . 

    The applause of a Yorkshire crowd for the speakers began to relax those gathered there and became a celebration of a remarkable life.
