  2. Rogue trader Leslie Smith to pay £150,000 for white lines scam

    A rogue trader who targeted churches, schools and charities in a car park white line painting scam has been ordered to pay more than £150,000.

    Leslie Smith, who pretended to be from the Local Authority Highways, managed to scam 32 organisations out of more than £50,000 over four years.

    He was sentenced to 16 months in prison in September after pleading guilty to fraudulent trading.

    He has now been ordered to pay £150,000 Under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002.

    Smith, of Minsterworth, Gloucestershire, has three months to pay or face a sentence in default of 18 months.

  3. Bristol man 'seriously hurt' as brick thrown through bus window

    A 65-year-old man is in hospital with "potentially life-changing injuries" after he was hit by a brick thrown through a bus window.

    The attack happened last night about 11.30pm when the 90 bus, travelling from Bristol to Hengrove, reached Inns Court Avenue in Knowle.

    "The victim was struck in the head", a police spokesman said.

    "He is currently in hospital for treatment where his condition has deteriorated.  Anyone who saw what happened is asked to contact police.

  5. Bristol Mayor refuses to comment on Jeremy Corbyn after no-confidence vote

    Bristol's elected Labour mayor, Marvin Rees, says he doesn't want to become embroiled the national debate currently surrounding Jeremy Corbyn's leadership of the Labour party.

    Speaking to the BBC's Andrew Plant, at a pro-EU gathering, he said there isn't anything to be gained for him getting involved with what's going on, and that the Corbyn debate is a "Westminster question".

  6. Lorry now moved after a chaotic evening on Marlborough's roads

    Wiltshire Police say the lorry which had crashed into a house in Marlborough has now been moved and the road is clear.

    They said the driver had been following the sat-nav which led to the lorry becoming stuck. We spoke with local residents to see what they made of it all

  8. Sir Bobby Charlton & John Cleese honoured by the University of Bath

    Graduations have started at the University of Bath. 

    Over the next three days, thousands of students will receive their degrees, but there have also been honorary ones given out to famous faces including Sir Bobby Charlton.

  9. Bristol volunteer shortlisted for Rugby award

    Nino Genua

    Nino Genua volunteers at Bristol Rugby and he's just been shortlisted for the Premiership Rugby Parliamentary Community Awards.

    He has learning difficulties and Down's syndrome but has so far completed more than 45 hours work at the club.

    Nino will find out if he's won at an awards ceremony at the House of Commons on Thursday 7 July.

    We'll let you know how he gets on.

  10. Rain halts Gloucestershire's reply at Grace Road

    Leicestershire's Neil Dexter was finally dismissed for 136 on a rain-hit second day against Gloucestershire.

    The all-rounder added 29 to his overnight 107 not out before a superb slip catch by Chris Dent ended his 86-run stand with Clint McKay.

    Australian McKay raced to a 47-ball half-century before he miscued Liam Norwell (4-72) and was caught for 55.

    The home side were eventually all out for 334 and Gloucestershire replied with 69-0 before bad weather arrived.

  12. Bristol's Katie Swan 'disappointed' with result but still dreams of winning Wimbledon one day

    Bristol tennis player Katie Swan has lost on her senior Wimbledon debut this afternoon. 

    The 17-year-old was handed a wild card for the main draw and faced an opponent who was ranked nearly 400 places above her. 

    Despite fighting hard in both sets Katie eventually lost 6-2, 6-3. 

    She'll now compete in the junior event.

    Organisers say regardless of the EU Referendum result they want to demonstrate to the people of Europe that Bristolians are inclusive, open and patient.

    They want show people how to turn the Leave decision into a positive one for all - regardless of age, gender, race, or demographics.

    A lorry has got stuck in Marlborough and the disruption is causing a bit of a tailback in the Wiltshire town.

    Officers are going to try and get it moved within the next hour.

  15. Brexit - how are local businesses being affected?

    Since the Brexit vote last week, we've seen the FTSE and currency markets tumble, so is this having an immediate impact on business?

    A snapshot survey by Business West has revealed that a third of their members have seen a negative impact, though of course that means two thirds are carrying on much as before.

  17. Blood and blue lights - students shown a day in the life of the health service

    No these students aren't gawping at this unfortunate "accident" in the car park of Swindon's Great Western Hospital - they're here to learn.

    This reconstruction, where a cyclist is hit by a car, aims to show what happens to people on their journey through the NHS, 

    As well as watching the pros at work the students from three schools in the town were able to try their hand at basic life support before putting their questions to a range of healthcare professionals.

    The idea behind the day is to give school children the chance to experience a typical day in the health service and what career paths are available. 

  18. Arrests over schools historical abuse allegations 'crucial'

    Three former school workers have been arrested after allegations of historical abuse at Gloucestershire and Wiltshire schools.

    The men worked at Badgeworth Court and Dowdeswell Court near Cheltenham, and Clouds House near Salisbury.

    The allegations date to the 1960s and 1980s and the schools are now closed. They came to light following a BBC Points West investigation last year.  

    Det Ch Insp Jeremy Carter said he hoped the arrests send a strong signal to the victims of the allegations.

  20. Rees-Mogg backs Boris for PM

    MP Jacob Rees-Mogg says he will support Boris Johnson's bid to be the next prime minister.

    Speaking to BBC Points West, Mr Rees-Mogg, a Brexit advocate, said he believed it's important any potential prime minister supported Brexit and has the country's confidence to negotiate an exit from the EU.

    The North East Somerset MP added Boris was the stronger candidate for leadership over the North Somerset MP Liam Fox because he had led a more prominent campaign for Brexit.
