    Sunny spells and showers to end the day, some of these heavy and possibly thundery. Tonight will be largely dry with a very small risk of showers and the winds easing. Temperatures expected to fall to around 13C (55F).

  3. Treadmill world record attempt halted after man taken ill

    A man who was trying to break a record on a treadmill in the middle of the shopping centre in Aylesbury this week became ill at the weekend and had to go to hospital.

    Steve Moore was trying to run for the longest distance ever on a treadmill in Friar's Square Shopping centre, but was taken ill overnight, just 50 miles into his attempt. 

    He's now been sent home, and doctors have told him to take it easy.  

  4. Hain Daniels closure a 'body blow' for Luton

    The closure of a Luton fruit packing factory has been described as a "body blow" for the town and the staff.

    Richard Owen, from the GMB Union, told me: "It's always bad news when people lose their jobs."

    He added: "In this case, there are people there who have worked long and hard for the company, they have been there sometimes 25-30 years, so you can imagine the effect on those individuals is just devastating."

  5. Helen Bailey disappearance: Police conduct further searches

    Police say further searches are taking place today at the home address of missing author Helen Bailey and at an address in Broadstairs, Kent.

    Officers say that "significant inquiries and searches have already been made" to try and trace Ms Bailey, but that further searches are taking place today.

    It was reported that the author left a note to her partner saying she needed some time to herself and that she was to visit their holiday home in Kent.

    A 55-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is being questioned at Royston police station.

  6. Missing Helen Bailey: Man arrested on suspicion of murder

    A 55-year-old man from Royston has been arrested following the disappearance of children's author Helen Bailey.

    The man is being questioned at the town's police station. 

    He has been arrested on suspicion of murder, disposing of a body in a manner likely to obstruct the coroner and suspicion of theft.

    Today marks three months since the author was last seen walking her dog Boris near her Hertfordshire home.

  8. The Open 2016: Tyrrell Hatton’s spin-offs for his second place in Scotland

    Tyrrell Hatton might only have finished runner-up at the Scottish Open at Castle Stuart on Sunday - but he still ended up a three-time winner in other respects.

    For the fifth time in six years, it earned the Buckinghamshire golfer a place at the Open Championship - no mean feat for a young man who does not turn 25 until October.

    Apart from booking a spot at Royal Troon, it earned Hatton a place at his first American major - the USPGA at Baltusrol, New Jersey, at the end of July.

    His Scottish Open pay out of €429,468 represents the largest of his five-year professional career.

  9. Andrea Leadsom quits: Local MPs reactions

    Andrea Leadsom has pulled out of the contest to become Conservative Party leader today, leaving the way clear for Theresa May to be the next UK prime minister.

    The Northamptonshire MP, who was born in Aylesbury, announced her withdrawal this lunchtime.

  11. Hoddesdon explosion: Man charged with manslaughter

    A man has been charged with manslaughter after two men died in an explosion in an industrial area in Hoddesdon last year.

    Simon Thomerson, 40, of Southerland Avenue, Maida Vale, has been charged with two counts of manslaughter by gross negligence and failure to discharge employers' duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

    The blast happened at about at 16:40 on 3 October 2015 at Plumpton Road in Hoddesdon.  

    Brother Jashar Lamallari, 37, and Ardian, 42, from Wood Green, London, died in hospital. A third man was later released.

    Mr Thomerson has been released on bail and will appear before St Albans Magistrates' Court on 16 August.

  13. Yakubu: Boreham Wood manager admits signing striker would be unlikely

    Boreham Wood manager Luke Garrard admits signing Yakubu is a "long shot", despite the ex-Nigeria and Everton striker training with the club.

    Yakubu, 33, lives close to Wood's ground and played in Saturday's friendly versus former club Reading.

    "He's like a Rolls Royce, especially at this level. When he lands on the ball he's phenomenal," said Garrard.  

    "Is he as sharp as he used to be in the Premier League? No, but at 33 he could definitely do a job in the League."  Read more here.

  14. No reports of overcrowding, say Southern rail following service cuts

    As passengers took to social media in response to the axing of Southern rail services, a company spokesman said 95% of trains were running on time or within five minutes against the revised timetable and there had been no reports of overcrowding.

    He said one Horsham to London Victoria service and a Thameslink train to Bedford had been cancelled.

    Mick Cash, RMT general secretary, said the new timetable was "a crisis measure designed to rig appalling performance figures".

    "The fewer trains you run, the fewer will be delayed and the better your headline performance statistics will look," he said.

  15. Southern rail services cut from timetable as dispute continues

    Hundreds of Southern rail services, which run through Beds, Herts and Bucks, have been temporarily axed under an amended timetable brought in from midnight in response to months of disruption.

    Parent firm Govia Thameslink (GTR) said the "more reliable" timetable, with 341 fewer daily services, would operate on week days "for the foreseeable future".

    Passengers vented their frustration on the firm's Twitter feed as services failed to arrive on Monday morning, expressing their concerns as to how they would get to work.

  16. Luton factory to close: Visiting the site

    I'm at Hain Daniels fruit packing plant in Luton today, where around 220 jobs are at risk following an announcement that the factory will close.

    Staff have been told that they could be offered jobs elsewhere but the plant will close by December.

  18. Albertina Choules death: Police unable to clarify details

    Earlier we told you that the man arrested on suspicion of murdering Albertina Choules last week had been taken to hospital and we had asked Thames Valley Police what he was there for.

    We also asked them if the man they had made an appeal about and issued a description for was the arrested man.

    A force spokesman has told us they can't go into the details of what the arrested man is being treated for. Neither can they confirm if he is the same person as the man they have described in their latest update.

    Should they be able to clarify our points... we'll let you know.

  19. Missing Helen Bailey: Three months on

    It's been three months since children's author Helen Bailey went missing from her Hertfordshire home and police have said they still aren't sure where she is or if she is still alive.

    The 51-year-old, who wrote the Electra Brown series for teenagers, was last seen walking her dog Boris near her home in Royston in the afternoon of 11 April.

    There has not been any trace of the 51-year-old or her pet despite searches.

    Her partner Ian Stewart said: "Whatever has happened, wherever you are I will come and get you."

  20. Bedford shootings: Four more arrests

    Police have made four further arrests in connection with four shootings in Bedford over the weekend.

    Four men, all from Bedford, have been arrested after shots were fired at four properties in the town overnight on Friday and in the early hours of Saturday morning.

    A 19-year-old, a 21-year-old and a 22-year-old were arrested on suspicion of firearms offences and have been bailed for further investigation.

    A second 19-year-old remains in police custody for questioning.

    Three people had previously been arrested.
