  5. Is this World War One campaign medal your family heirloom?

    Jonathan Cowap

    Presenter, BBC Radio York

On Friday last week it was exactly 100 years since the start of the Battle of the Somme and on my mid-morning show on BBC Radio York we asked for listeners' family connections to this most terrible of battles.

After the show I received an email from David in York, who has a campaign medal from the first world war, which he found in his garden in 1972.

David lived in Surrey and when he had some turf delivered he found the medal inside one of the rolls.

Later, when he moved up to York, he found he'd returned to the place where the medal owner had originally come from.

David's now trying to reunite the medal with the family of the soldier it was awarded to.

Can you help David reunite the medal with the family of Private Percy Heseltine Grundon.

One of those backing the campaign is Lorraine Allaway, who lives in the Dales. Her husband Bob was killed last year by a drink-driver.

She thinks sentences aren't harsh enough.
