  3. The man who discovered Jimi Hendrix

    The Jimi Hendrix Experience

It has been twenty years since the death of Animals bassist and manager Bryan James 'Chas' Chandler.

Without him, the world may not have heard the music talents of artists like Jimi Hendrix.

"This guy didn't seem anything special, then all of a sudden he started playing with his teeth," said roadie James "Tappy" Wright.

"People were saying, 'What the hell?' and Chas thought, 'I could do something with this kid'."

The BBC's Simon Armstrong has been remembering him.

  4. Mumford & Sons member to open London music venue

    Ben Lovatt

Ben Lovett, of Mumford & Sons is to open a new music venue in London.

Lovett, who co-founded independent label Communion - home to artists like The Staves and Michael Kiwanuka - and runs a bar in Brooklyn, New York, is to open Omeara at Flat Iron Square in Borough later this year.

He said: "I’ve been playing and putting on shows in London for my entire adult life. Without the grass-roots music venues in this city, the band and I simply wouldn’t have achieved what we have, so I have a lot to be grateful for.

"Over the last few years, London has lost so many of its brilliant music establishments and I want to do what I can to try and reverse that decline."

The first live bookings will be announced in September.

In recent years, London music and club venues such as Astoria, Mean Fiddler and Turnmills have all close their doors.

  5. Leona Lewis is transformed into a cat

  6. Courteney Cox-directed video for song about her daughter

    Foy Vance

Foy Vance now gets a second mention in today's Music News LIVE (scroll down to watch him being joined by Ed Sheeran on stage at Latitude).

The music video for his song Coco has been released, directed by former Friends actress Courteney Cox and featuring her daughter Coco - who the song is about.

    She said:

Quote Message: From the first time Foy played Coco for me (and every time I’ve heard it since), I’ve felt he captured, not only Coco’s unique personality, but also the beautiful childhood innocence that sadly, but inevitably, fades with time. It is like a snapshot of the world as seen through a child's eyes… sung by a man who is moved by how the world seems from her perspective. I think it’s a perspective that we, as adults, never stop longing for.

Vance added: "That old adage ‘the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree’ has never proved more true than with Courteney and Coco. As soon as I wrote the song Coco - which started out as an off the cuff verse to make Coco laugh - it was obvious that Courteney would direct the video."

    Drake

While Drake chart domination continues (scroll down for more on that), the Canadian superstar has been sharing secrets from his past - namely a teenage Ebay addiction, funded by his mum.

Drake posted a handwritten note from a decade ago, explaining to his mother that his Ebay charges had come to "more than I had planned for" and thanking her for "temporarily funding my music and my wardrobe".

In the caption he explained "eBay was the addiction back in 2006. Def come a long way and it's safe to say I most likely settled this debt."

The undated note, which begins "Dear Princely person", sees the former Beatle asking for a donation for the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, which he co-founded in 1996.

McCartney adds: "Anyway, one of these days you'll have to come and teach a class some moves!!

"Who knows, it may turn out to be something special for thousands of future kids."

Made up of members of Rage Against the Machine, Cypress Hill and Public Enemy, they played on Los Angeles' Skid Row on Friday.

The rooftop gig featured a mix of all three artists' music plus a cover of Beastie Boys' No Sleep Til Brooklyn and an original track The Party's Over.

  10. Avalanches cancel European festival shows

    The Avalanches

Hot off their comeback from a 16 year break, European fans of Australian beatmasters The Avalanches will have to wait a bit longer before seeing them perform live.

They've had to cancel forthcoming shows in Europe due to ongoing health problems involving member Tony Di Blasi.

Writing on Facebook, the band said their show at Splendour in the Grass in Australia next weekend would be unaffected.

They said: "Preparations for our live show at Splendour are going well but unfortunately due to a medical condition requiring treatment in Australia, Tony has been advised against international travel for the next few months, so with great disappointment we have had to postpone some forthcoming festival appearances in Europe."

The band added: "Thanks to everyone worldwide who has made Wildflower such a success, and stay tuned for rescheduled and new live dates soon. Big Love."

The Avalanches haven't specified which shows would be postponed.

  11. 2Pac biopic delayed over rights row

    Tupac Shakur

Tupac Shakur fans will have to wait a while longer to see new biopic All Eyez on Me - because of a feud between rapper Daz Sillinger and publishing giant BMG, according to TMZ

The website claims the track Ambitionz Az a Ridah is the sticking point, with Sillinger claiming he holds the rights and only he can grant permission to use it in the film.

The movie release has so far been pushed from September to November to give them more time to sort it out.

  12. M.I.A. will no longer headline Afropunk London

    M.I.A.

The organisers of New York event Afropunk's first festival in London have confirmed M.I.A. will no longer headline the event, following controversy over her criticism of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Back in April the singer said in an interview with London's Evening Standard: "It's interesting that in America the problem you’re allowed to talk about is Black Lives Matter... Is Beyoncé or Kendrick Lamar going to say Muslim Lives Matter? Or Syrian Lives Matter? Or this kid in Pakistan matters? That’s a more interesting question."

After much criticism of her stance, she later said on Twitter she would not be performing at Afropunk. But despite fans' threats to boycott the event, the festival had released a statement saying she was still the scheduled performer.

But a new statement makes it official:

Quote Message: We are excited and honored to do our first AFROPUNK Festival in London and want to do it right. After discussing the situation with the artist and the community, a decision was agreed upon by all involved that M.I.A will no longer headline AFROPUNK London.

A new headliner for the event in September will be announced this week.

  14. Has streaming broken the UK singles chart?

    Drake and charts

When the UK's official chart was revealed late on Friday, Biffy Clyro scored a second number one album with Ellipsis and Drake's One Dance managed to notch up its 14th week as the UK's number one single.

Music Reporter Mark Savage has been looking into how Drake's managed to hog the chart limelight for so long, when his track isn't the best-selling song of the last seven days - and isn't even the top ten.

As fans keep streaming the same songs over and over again, fewer records than ever before are entering the UK top 40 - but has streaming broken the singles chart and what impact is it having on new artists getting heard?

Musicians, managers and other industry figures have shared their views

Meanwhile on the US Billboard 200 chart, Drake's album Views is at number one for a 10th week, after a week off last week when Blink-182 managed to top the chart.

  15. Tributes paid to Suicide star Alan Vega

    View more on twitter

Musicians and music fans have been paying tribute to Alan Vega of influential 1970s electronic duo Suicide, who died over the weekend at the age of 78.

Henry Rollins broke the news on his website with a statement from Vega's family, which confirmed the "great artist and creative force" had died "peacefully in his sleep":

Quote Message: Alan was not only relentlessly creative, writing music and painting until the end, he was also startlingly unique. Along with Martin Rev, in the early 1970’s, they formed the two person avant band known as Suicide.
Quote Message: Almost immediately, their incredible and unclassifiable music went against every possible grain. Their confrontational live performances, light-years before Punk Rock, are the stuff of legend. Their first, self-titled album is one of the single most challenging and noteworthy achievements in American music.

In New York in the 1970s Suicide performed at the legendary music venue CBGB alongside artists like the Ramones and Blondie and were among the first artists to use synthesizers and drum machines.

Famous fans include Bruce Springsteen, writer Nick Hornby, Soft Cell and M.I.A. who sampled the song Ghost Rider in her single Born Free.

Suicide track Dream Baby Dream has been covered by Springsteen, Savages, Neneh Cherry and Arcade Fire, whose frontman Win Butler posted his version on SoundCloud as a tribute.

The duo were scheduled to headline California's Desert Daze festival in October, and in a Facebook statement organisers called Vega "an innovator and pioneer, one of the warriors who taught us never to compromise."

  16. Tay Tay vs Yeezy: Stars' battle gets personal

    Kanye West and Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift and Kanye West's break-up is getting ever more bitter after the rapper's wife Kim Kardashian released clips from a recorded conversation that appear to support his claims Swift knew about his controversial track Famous.

In the song, which was released on his Life of Pablo album, Kanye suggests he and Swift may have sex because he made her famous - a reference to the 2009 MTV awards (pictured above) when he interrupted her winner's speech for best video.

Swift has angrily denied his claims that she knew about the track's content and had given it her blessing.

Kardashian's series of Instagram videos at the weekend seemed to support her husband's assertions that Taylor was aware of the track.

However, Swift has since tweeted a response, containing strong language which might offend some readers, claiming Kanye "promised to play the song for me but never did":
