  3. Paul and Ringo celebrate 10 years of Cirque du Soleil's Beatles show

    Former Beatles Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr were in Las Vegas last night to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Love, the Cirque du Soleil show inspired by the band's music.

    Other guests included John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono (below), director Ron Howard, who's currently making a film about The Beatles, and the son of late Beatles producer Sir George Martin.

  4. Travel: Lane closed on A580 Islington into town

    One lane is closed and traffic is slow on the A580 Islington into town in Liverpool at the B5173 St Anne Street junction because of a gas leak and emergency repairs. 

    Congestion tails back to the Moss Street junction.

  5. Chief Constable offers condolences to family of Mzee Mohammed

    Chief Constable of Merseyside Police, Andy Cooke, has said raised tensions in L8 "saddens me greatly" and offered his condolences to the family of Mzee Mohammed.

    Mr Cooke and Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson both appealed for a Black Lives Matter march on Saturday to be a peaceful event in memory of the 18-year-old.  

    A post-mortem examination into his death was inconclusive, the IPCC said and further tests will have to be carried out. 

  6. Liverpool to Belfast flight: Man held after incident

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of endangering the safety of an aircraft following an incident on board a flight from Liverpool, police have said.

    The 30-year-old was also questioned on suspicion of acting in a disorderly manner on the Flybe flight to Belfast on Thursday.

  7. Mzee Mohammed death: Post-mortem results 'inconclusive'

    A post-mortem examination into the death of Mzee Mohammed at Liverpool One shopping centre yesterday is 'inconclusive', say police investigators.

    The 18-year-old died in police custody after being detained by the centre's security staff. Reports said he had been seen with a knife "behaving erratically" before officers were called.

    An IPCC statement said further tests will be carried out to help ascertain the cause of Mr Mohammed’s death.

  8. B&M's revenues surge after new store openings

    Discount retailer B&M said like-for-like sales growth ground to a halt in the 13 weeks to 25 June, but saw overall revenues surge by 21.5% to £554.8m thanks to a raft of new store openings.

    The Liverpool-based firm added that underlying like-for-like sales rose 1.7%, stripping out the impact of new stores on existing nearby outlets. 

    It opened 12 new UK stores in the quarter and five in Germany.

  10. Former Marine breaks 10k single leg amputee world record in Wavertree

    Former Marine Andy Grant from Liverpool broke the world record for the fastest 10k by a single leg amputee at Wavertree Athletics Stadium last night.

    Paced by the Liverpool Harriers, he set a new time of 37:17 beating the previous record by 36 seconds.

    Allied Bakeries says it plans to shut its Saltney distribution depot, with 53 posts at the site facing potential redundancy.

  13. Five arrested after more than 200 cannabis plants found in Kirkdale raid

    Five Merseyside men have been arrested during raids in Kirkdale that also uncovered a cannabis farm with more than 200 plants, a shotgun and cash.

    The searches were part of an operation to investigate a drugs ring in and around the Stanley Road area, and premises targeted included a newsagents on the corner of Stanley Road and Briar Street, plus houses on Wulstan Street. 

  14. Warrington motorcyclist dies in Birchwood crash

    A Warrington motorcyclist has died in a crash with a car in Birchwood.

    It happened during rush hour last night on Woolston Grange Avenue between Kingsland Grange and Harpers Road. 

    A 30-year-old man from Leigh has been arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving.

  15. Andy Burnham also calls for Northern Powerhouse commitment

    The Shadow Home Secretary Andy Burnham has added his voice to calls for the new government to reaffirm its commitment to boosting the northern economy.

    Mr Burnham says Theresa May's administration now needs to "honour" some of the pledges made by former Chancellor George Osborne, who said billions of pounds would be spent on infrastructure improvements in the hope of creating a so-called northern powerhouse.  

  16. Man, 44, arrested over making threats to kill

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill after an email was sent to the account of Wallasey MP Angela Eagle. 

    Merseyside Police say they executed a warrant in Paisley in Scotland this morning and arrested a 44-year-old.

    He will be questioned by Merseyside detectives today.

    Footage has emerged of a 'rare and elusive' Scottish wildcat kitten that has been born at Chester Zoo.
