  2. Police fear 'street Valium' in Scarborough could kill

    Andrew Barton

    BBC Local Live, York

A drug which has caused the mouths of users in Scarborough to turn turn blue could prove deadly, police are warning.

Emergency services in the town say they're receiving a "growing number of calls for assistance" from people who have suffered the side-effect after overdosing on what police describe as "street Valium".

    Valium

The drug is Diazepam brought into the country from Asia or Eastern Europe which is not the pharmaceutical grade used to treat anxiety. It's believed the batch in question is laced with date rape drug Rohypnol.

North Yorkshire Police Inspector Graeme Kynman says the people affected are "largely addicts who have no recollection once roused as to how they came to be unconscious".

Insp Kynman says his biggest fear is that "there could be a loss of life".

  3. Feeling the heat? Here's some useful advice...

Meanwhile, the club has confirmed Academy manager Andy McMillan has left the club

  5. Fugitive sex offender deported from Cambodia

    BBC News England

A convicted sex offender who fled the UK and spent two years on the run has been deported from Cambodia.

    Damien Midgley

Damien Midgley, 39, was tried for child sex offences in 2014 but did not attend the hearing.

He was convicted in his absence and jailed for six years. A warrant for his arrest was also issued.

Midgley, formerly of Becca Lane, Aberford, near Leeds, is due to appear before York Crown Court on Wednesday, North Yorkshire Police said. He will be sentenced for absconding.

  6. Low Cost holidaymakers likely to get just £7.78 refund

    Brian Milligan

    Personal finance reporter

Thousands of holidaymakers who booked travel with Low Cost Holidays - including one from Skipton - may get a refund of just £7.78 each, the BBC understands.

    Holidaymakers in Spain

The firm went into administration last week, leaving 27,000 customers abroad, and 110,000 with future bookings.

It was not registered with the UK government-backed Atol scheme, which would have compensated them in full.

Instead it had lodged £1.09m with authorities in Mallorca - enough to pay out a few pounds to each customer.

  10. What next for the Northern Powerhouse?

    David Rhodes

    BBC Look North, Yorkshire

The former chancellor George Osborne peppered media interviews with references to the "Northern Powerhouse", but what's next for the idea since his departure?

    Cities montage

In a 2014 speech, Mr Osborne said: "I'm here to talk to you today about what we can do to make the cities of the north a powerhouse for our economy."

The project, which he branded as his own initiative, was aimed at ending the UK's economic reliance on London.

Following Theresa May's Cabinet Reshuffle, Conservative MP Andrew Percy has been appointed as the new Northern Powerhouse minister. So what's the future of this key Conservative manifesto pledge? I've been finding out more.

  11. Soaring temperatures buckle rails at Selby and cause delays on East Coast mainline

    BBC Travel

The high summer temperatures are being blamed for the suspension of train journeys on First Transpennine's Express service between Hull and York.

The company says a rail has buckled in the heat at Selby and trains are currently unable to run through Selby station.

There are also delays on Virgin Trains East Coast service.

Journeys between York and Doncaster and York and Edinburgh are delayed due to speed restrictions imposed because of "high rail temperatures".

A York man who must notify police 24 hours before he has sex has said his children have stopped contacting him.

John O'Neill has told the BBC's Victoria Derbyshire programme it "must be horrific" for them to see his sexual predilections shared online.

    John O'Neill

Mr O'Neill, who said he had an interest in sado-masochism, was cleared of rape last year but subjected to the order and could be jailed if he ignores it.

He said the interim sexual risk order had resulted in a "devastating" effect on his personal life, saying his children - who are aged 12 and 16 and live abroad - had deleted him on Facebook.

North Yorkshire Police said it was satisfied the order was proportionate.
