Emergency services in the town say they're receiving a "growing number of calls for assistance" from people who have suffered the side-effect after overdosing on what police describe as "street Valium".
The drug is Diazepam brought into the country from Asia or Eastern Europe which is not the pharmaceutical grade used to treat anxiety. It's believed the batch in question is laced with date rape drug Rohypnol.
North Yorkshire Police Inspector Graeme Kynman says the people affected are "largely addicts who have no recollection once roused as to how they came to be unconscious".
Insp Kynman says his biggest fear is that "there could be a loss of life".
