While it may have been the hottest day of the year so far, the egg was left a little on the... well... runny side...

It'll remain hot and sunny this evening and stay warm and humid overnight, with temperatures staying around 20C (68F) for most of the region.

Wednesday will be another hot and sunny day with temperatures reaching up to 30C (86F). It'll stay dry but there'll be a little more cloud in the afternoon, and there's a low risk of an isolated thunderstorm later in the day.

Reporter Jozef Hall recorded 34C (93F) in his car in Landbeach, just north of Cambridge, this afternoon, which was hot enough to melt the tarmac a bit.

Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner has declared his support for Owen Smith in the Labour leadership contest.

In a statement issued this afternoon, he says: "I will work with whoever is elected as leader, but have decided that particularly on the key issue of Europe, I am closest to Owen and have therefore decided to nominate him for the leadership."

The new chancellor, Philip Hammond, has insisted he has "hard guarantees" about the future of the Cambridge-based technology company ARM Holdings, following the proposed £24bn takeover by Softbank of Japan.

In the Commons today, Mr Hammond said the government had been given "very, very hard guarantees about the future autonomy of the company headquartered here in the UK" and about its "commitment to double the number of UK employees over the next five years." 

He said: "The UK remains very much open to foreign investment", but added "we are not open to asset-strippers."

Here's a bit more from the former chief executive of ARM, who has been talking about the £24bn takeover deal with Japanese tech giant Softbank.

Warren East told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "Companies these days tend to be global, and ARM is a fantastic example... it just so happens much of the brain power is in the UK."

Warren East's relaxed attitude to selling-off one of the UK's most successful tech companies to a Japanese company is at odds with that of ARM's co-founder.

Hermann Hauser (above) told the BBC yesterday it was a "sad day for technology in Britain".  

The Cambridge Folk Festival, which is being headlined by Christy Moore (pictured), Imelda May and Mary Chapin Carpenter, has sold out for the 23rd year running.

The 52nd year of the festival brings an eclectic mix of artists from around the world to the Cherry Hinton Hall site.

Each year more than 14,000 people attend. It takes place between 28 and 31 July.

Neil Jones, operations director for Cambridge Live which runs the festival, said: "In an ever competitive market place it is fantastic to have such support from our loyal audiences who we look forward to welcoming to this year's event."

If you're just joining us, more than 40 firefighters have been tackling a large pallet and vehicle fire on Fengate in Peterborough this afternoon. There's some rather dramatic pictures if you scroll below.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue say the fire is now under control, with crews using hose reels, jets and monitors to tackle it. 

A forklift is now being used to clear pallets to assist with firefighting. It is not yet known what caused the blaze. 

The mercury - or at least its modern digital equivalent - reached a whopping level in the car of political reporter Tom Barton in Cambridge this afternoon.

Cambridgeshire fire investigators say "sunlight reflected onto combustible materials" is the most likely cause of a flat blaze in Wisbech this afternoon - where temperatures have reached 30C (86F).

Crews from March, Long Sutton and West Walton were called to the fire in the roof space of a second floor flat in Orange Grove at about 13:25. Residents escaped unharmed.

Station commander Mick Jackman, said: "The first crews in attendance worked very hard and did an excellent job to cut away the roof material, extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading."

In other news this afternoon, a man accused of causing the death of an off-duty officer by dangerous driving is due to stand trial next week.

Det Con Sharon Garrett, 48, died in a five-vehicle crash on the A141 near Wyton in June 2014, when the Renault Clio Sharon she was driving struck two other cars and two lorries.

Danny Warby, 27, of Runcton Holme near King's Lynn, pleaded not guilty in September last year.  

The trial is due to begin at Peterborough Crown Court on 25 July and is expected to last about four days.  

Fire crews are still at the Fengate blaze in Peterborough, but it is now "under control", the fire service reports.

Hannah Jackson, who's at the scene of the pallet and vehicle fire on Fengate in Peterborough, says she has seen about eight or nine fire engines.

She says the blaze is outside the Brewers Select building and Evans Halshaw car lot.

She saw staff moving cars away from the blaze as it began to die down, adding one car was moved onto the road and another had "melted" down the side.

Just to briefly interrupt our coverage of the fire in Peterborough... a court has heard the body of Royston author Helen Bailey was found in a septic tank at her home, along with her pet dog.

Fire officers are still tacking a blaze in Fengate with jets to contain the fire and stop it from spreading to nearby buildings. 

Nitesh Patel took this photo of the smoke which gives some idea of the scale of the blaze. It involves wooden pallets and "a number of vehicles", according to the fire service.

Police say there is "no mention of any injuries at this time", in the fire on Fengate.

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire Police says: "We were called by the fire service at 13:10 with reports of a fire on an industrial site."

Officers are helping with traffic control in the area.
